Stayed 7 nights to rescue my son from his $2 a night backpacking adventure (there was no way I would share a dorm with 20 others and no hot water)
Stayed a week, & wouldn't reco anywhere else.
Great room, superb views, fantastic location. Only downside is that with wooden floors, you get a bit of noise from other rooms.
Picked up at the dock & brought to the "hotel"...I would agree with other reviews that it is more like a family home atmosphere.
No meals, but there is a kitchen with fridge for milk etc... No need to cook in as there are plenty of cafes (food average apart from Maraposa, which is great (but pricey for the island))
No backpackers.....so that is a plus!!!

First the Lighthouse Hotel… we could not have been more pleased!!!! The rooms are simple but obviously attention has been paid to the details in the design. The rooms are immaculate, quiet, air conditioned and bug free. Everything about the hotel is charming…the grounds and the toucans, the exceptional view (sunsets were amazing and we saw an assortment of fish including eagle rays right from the balcony), the hammocks, and the staff. We were so pleased with the hotel that we came back for an extra night after staying at one of the cays. We looked at other hotels while we were there and were glad we chose the Lighthouse Hotel.

As for Utila… if you are hoping for a luxurious resort town, go to another island. Utila is a small island, made smaller by the fact that there is mostly only one street, and even that only extends half the length of the island. Bikes, scooters, and golf carts are available to rent to tour the island, but almost everything is within walking distance. Yes, the streets are dirty, and for the most part, the food was mediocre at best, but the people are friendly. Most of them are there with the sole purpose of scuba diving and/or snorkeling. Pretty much everyone speaks English and there are people from all over the world there. As a matter of fact, most of the people we met were there to do their Dive Master training.

Places to eat… Big Mamma’s had amazing pancakes, both bakeries have amazing cinnamon buns (apparently Thompson’s has great breakfast sandwiches), and the Mango Inn has excellent pizzas. The produce comes in on Tuesdays and Fridays so if the weather is bad and the boats are not running, the stores run low. If you go looking for the dirt, etc, you will have no difficulty finding it. However, if you go looking for beauty, that also is everywhere. We quite enjoyed Utila but openly recognize that it is not for everyone. You may want to check out the www.aboututila.com website for more information about planning your trip.

Utila is a "pre-tourist" island. Things are a bit rustic there and it is an ideal destination for back-packers and scuba students. However, the Lighthouse Hotel is a modern and comfortable hotel that is tailored to the "suitcase" tourist and is very centrally located. To call it a hotel is not justified. This place is like being adopted into a host family. I suggest they rename it the Lighthouse Family Home. They have the perfect location too. It is at the end of the Main Drag (the only street) where it is quiet, yet, you will literally be in the middle of town after a 60 second walk. The hotel is built on top of stilts above the water and you will fall asleep to the sound of water lapping against the stilts. Even better, in the afternoon you can laze in the hammock and watch the sunset from the wrap around balcony. It is truly a dream staying at the Lighthouse. Make sure that you get dinner recommendations before you leave the hotel. You will not regret it. Utila Dive Center is less than a minute
walk from there and if you are taking a course or just planning on diving, UTC is the only place to consider.

I found out about this new hotel (built in 2006) by searching on the [----] website. The pictures do not do the rooms justice. For around $50/night, you get hardwood floors, satellite tv, comfortable bed, fridge, microwave, and a nice bathroom with hot water. And lets not forget the view...you walk outside on the wrap around porch and have a
great view from on top of the water. We got our advanced dive certification from the dive shop Alton's which is almost next door to this hotel. It is also nice that this hotel is toward the end of the town so it is more quiet and it is less than a 10 minute walk to the private beach, Bando Beach. The owners of the hotel are very nice people and helped us get our luggage to the dock for the early morning
ferry and they offer water you can buy in jugs rather than have to buy
it in the store and carry it. I definitely recommend this place!
