After a long flight, it was wonderful to be picked up at the airport by John, who was waiting patiently. I had my dog traveling with me, so his graciousness went far beyond the norm. My apartment was very clean, and the small kitchen was perfect for preparing meals (and traveling on a budget). John was so hospitable about driving me to the bank, and the store. The Sunshine Cafe was closed due to bad weather and a slow season (which is unfortunate because it sounds wonderful from all reviews). But Sue, on my first night, showed up to keep me company at the restaurant down the road. (She is hilarious and very kind, by the way. I planned to stay one night and ended up staying 3 nights. Despite very rainy weather (definitely the rainy season) I enjoyed a beautiful walk on the beach in the early morning, and watched the sun set on their lovely property. After the mistake of staying on the West End on two previous visits---complete with loud partying, and a backpacker scene---this was a very welcome change, and gave me a different impression of Roatan. It was also easy to take a short taxi ride to the West End in the a.m. for breakfast, etc. I highly recommend Hobbies Hideaway for families, and couples, and solo travelers who don't necessarily want the party scene, but rather a calm and serene experience...

We stayed with John and Sue after a busy week of diving. Hobbies/Sunshine Cafe is located on a peaceful section of beach in the Sandy Bay area near enough to activities yet far enough away to unwind and enjoy the beauty and island life of Roatan. We chose Hobbies Hide-away based on the reviews here on Trip Advisor and we were not dissapointed. The rooms/apartments are comfortable and well furnished. We had reserved the single bedroom apartment but when we arrived John offered us the two bedroom as it had not been booked for that week. The previous guests had just moved out and it hadn't been cleaned but Sue quickly assisted with the cleaning to accommodate us. John and Sue continued to assist us with a rental car as well as most any need throughout the week. Their Sunshine Cafe has great food and is "island" priced as a number of the locals choose to eat there as well. The cooks/chefs Inez and Hosea are incredible local cooks and add to the flavor and friendly atmosphere. The dogs Hondo and Taboo add to the home like feel. If you are looking to unwind and kick back to island time look no further.

My partner and I stayed at Hobbie's for 4 nights. Our fully equipped apartment was right on the beach in Sandy Bay. Our flight was delayed for an hour, but John was waiting for us when we arrived. Sue welcomed us with a cold beer and after settling in, John drove us to the grocery store so we could stock up on enough food to last our entire stay. Hobbies is located away from the main (noisy) part of the island, which was perfect for us. We were the only guests at the hotel during our stay so we felt the entire beach was there just for us. John and Sue are great hosts -- giving you privacy when you want and friendly company when invited. In fact, they invited us for fresh conch fritters in their home on our last night. Would definitely recommend Hobbies.

This was probably one of the most relaxing vacations we've had. The hotel was very nice, very clean and very quiet.

The room (it was actually an apartment) was much more than adequate and had everything that we needed--including large, plush, clean-smelling towels, nice hot water in the shower, all the fresh drinking water we needed, A/C and comfortable beds and furniture. Plus a very nice common area that looks out over the beach and ocean.

The hosts were great as well. Sue and John are very friendly and though not at all intrusive, were there if we needed something or had questions about what to do, where to go and how to make it happen. Hondo and Taboo (their dogs) are fun and affectionate and good companions while walking on the beach or out on the dock.

If we decide to return to Roatan we'll be staying with John, Sue, Hondo and Taboo.

We stayed at Hobbies Hideaway for 6 nights. It is a quiet, private place right on the reef, just a short swim to great snorkeling--the main reason we choose the Hideaway. The two dogs, Hondo and Taboo, make sure that one's person and belongings are safe and secure, plus either John or Sue are always there. They are friendly and helpful. We were given a two bedroom apartment because a one bedroom wasn't available, so we had plenty of room. Everything was adequate but cleanliness needs improvement. The restaurant wasn't open so we either cooked our own meals or took a taxi into town. Our apartment door opened into the dining/bar area and sound did travel, so we wondered if perhaps we were lucky that the cafe was closed. All in all its a really good place to relax, spend time with yourself and your family, to be outdoors, exercise and above al,l enjoy the beauty of the reef.

Management response:Responded November 18, 2010

The restaurant and bar was closed due to tropical depression winds and rainy conditions that occur during Oct and Nov. It is very easy to track in sand from the beach front into the apartments, from towels and bare feet. Wash basin are provided. The apartments are sound insulated with the air conditioning running no sound can reach the back bedrooms areas.
Apartment doors do open to a large patio area. From the patio area you can hear the waves breaking on the reef during bad climate weather. Quite beautiful, nature’s forces. Sound from the bar cannot be heard in the apartments as the other apartment was occupied, thus the free upgrade from a one bedroom to a two bedroom away from the beach bar area.
Cleanliness is always addressed as a primary issue before arrival and departure. As we are on site at all times no reports or complaints were made to management at any time!
We feel because of a full week of rainy weather with limited sun they were despondent over their Roatan vacation. John and Sue owners

We didn't stay at Hobbie's Hideaway but lived down the lane from their place. When we first moved to Roatan,John and Sue were so welcoming. Our grandson would race down the road to Miss Sue's and she would always greet him with a glass of tropical juice. Many a night we would stroll down to their Bar and Restaurant for dinner for food to die for. We miss it very much and I would like to be sitting there right now having a Barena at the bar instead being cold in Calgary, Canada.. If you are heading to Roatan, you won't find a better place to stay, The setting, the company and the food are the best. A memorable holiday you will have.

Hobbies hideaway was exactly what I imagined when I began looking for places to stay while visiting Roatan.

We found their hospitality to be outstanding, their conversation engaging, thier views spectacular, and their food and drinks kept us coming back day after day.

The unit is located in Sandy Bay, which is relatively off the beaten patth of tourists. What made it great was that when we were ready to leave Hobbies and see the rest of the island, there was always a taxi within 3 minutes. And within 10 more minutes and less than 5 dollars, we were in West End, or Punta Gorda.

Hobbies were very helpful in getting us familiarized with the island and the reccomended places to dive, and tour.

They have hammocks and tons of beach front right our thier front door!
