“Pure Paradise”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 1, 2014

Eighth trip to the Caribbean and by far the best experience! Quiet, secluded, exotic - everything we had hoped for . The property is stunning, the private cabanas are wonderful, the snorkeling is exceptional, and the staff is the most helpful, most friendly , and most attentive you can find . Bug bites? Five in total. I do worse in my backyard in summer. The food? Good to excellent, particularly the a la carte dinner and the Honduran theme dinner. The Media Luna is lush, verdant, quiet and ultimately the perfect place to relax . Wouldn't think twice about going back. Beautiful island. No - stunning! Thank you, Media Luna owners and staff for a memorable week in paradise!

My little family and I stayed for a week from March 17-24th and we couldn't have asked for a better vacation. We loved our little cabana with a wonderful little deck and relaxing hammock. We were right next to the lobby and seconds from the pool, meals and the ocean. We didn't get ocean view but still had a beautiful view (rm 152)

Our son was one of only 4 children so it was quiet and laid back but the animation team (Isabella in particular) made his stay very fun and special. The action is in the excursions and is by no means a Disneyland experience for kids but it was a perfect family vacation for us and the little one who is a beach bum and very happy to play in the shallow pool perfect for him to swim independently.

The staff were amazing, happy, kind, honest and caring. We had left our tablet after dinner and thought it was gone for good only to find that Francis(our server from our a la carte) remembered us and returned it. When I tried to tip to show our gratitude (as my little guy was devastated) she insisted it was not necessary just glad he had it back!

Food was ok most days and quite good on others. We really enjoyed our send off meal and the traditional Honduran night. The cappuccino was addictive and sooooo good (cinnamon and chocolate on top) we are missing it already!

In closing, we would return to Media Luna in a heart beat either just the 2 of us or as a family once again. The small private remote nature of this resort, the amazing snorkelling off the shore and via excursion made this a paradise perfect for sun and relaxation for our little family.

We travelled with our 3 year old and felt very safe and very well taken care of. We did multiple excursions off the resort arranged through nolitours and the hotel who took security and the safety of their guests very seriously. Lorenza, the hotel manager, was incredible and helped to arrange a special tour off the resort so we could take gifts to some of the children at the local orphanage. The most amazing (though expensive) excursion was at the end of the stay when we went to visit the dolphins. They are in semi captivity and remain in the sea not a pool and are so happy and sweet.

My husband and I stayed at the Media Luna Feb 10 - 17 as a sort of honeymoon.
The resort is beautiful, it is quite far from anything else and we really enjoyed the peace and quiet at this resort. If you did want more "action" the West end has lots to see and do.
We loved the cabanas, very quiet and peaceful, we were in room 143 which is an ocean view room. The air conditioning worked amazing and the rooms were always cleaned very well. My only complaint about the rooms was the shower, which is not enclosed so water gets everywhere. The lights on the front of the cabanas are solar lights and ours was out the entire week so it was very dark walking up to the front door at night, which did not bother us too much until we saw a huge tarantula on the path near our room....yuck!!! The grounds are beautiful and well maintained. The beach was really nice, but we typically swam off the dive shop as we mostly just snorkelled.
The food is really not great. Not much selection, and food was only ever luke warm to cold, never actually hot. The bar did not have a particularly big selection, but that didn't really bother us. We rented a car a few times so we just picked up beer and wine from the grocery store.
The resort really doesn't offer a lot in terms of excursions, but we did do the dolphin swim and snorkel which was absolutely incredible, do it if you can!! We also did a snorkelling excursion, Daniella from the dive shop is really not overly pleasant, and the snorkelling off the dive shop was actually better than the paid trip. The Mosquitos when we went were absolutely dreadful (at least I think they were Mosquitos, you never actually saw what was biting you). I ended up with over 80 bites between my two legs. We would put bug spray on every night, but it didn't do much.
All of the staff at the resort were wonderful, always super friendly and helpful.
If you are not a smoker be ware that people smoke everywhere and everywhere. When we were there probably 90% of the resort smoked.
My husband and I do smoke, so it didn't bother us.
Overall we had a really great week. It was hot and sunny and a nice break from the freezing cold Canadian winter. We met some amazing people. We enjoyed our time there, but would probably not return. There are so many amazing places to visit, and this resort did not "wow" us enough for a second trip!

Paradise for a week! It went by so quickly- we will be back again one day.

The people of Honduras are so friendly, and as other reviewers have said, they work really hard to ensure that you are attended to. The attentive front desk, the Nolitours rep, the service in the restaurant, the cleaning staff, bar service and the beach service are all excellent. I have been to all inclusive resorts in many countries in the past, and I can honestly say that no one else has been as customer driven as Media Luna. Everyone was just a pleasure to be around, seemed happy with their jobs, and wanted to ensure that we were having a fantastic time.

This is where to go if you want to get away from it all. This is not a party resort, but a place to relax, swim, snorkel and scuba dive (if you desire). There are no resorts next to this resort- you are on your own in nature. There are shows some nights, but it is low key. The show on the last day with the local children dancing was my favourite.

Bring a book and chill out by looking at the beautiful water, or swing in your hammock if you have had too much sun. There are always enough chairs for everyone- no need to rush and reserve. One afternoon we were the only 2 people left of the beach!

Having our own personal cabana was heaven. I slept so well each night in complete quiet. Each cabana is very modern and new with your own large porch and hammock, plus a table and chairs. There is even a ceiling fan on the porch if you wanted to sit out and play cards.

The food overall was great. The omelet bar in the morning is a must, and lunch and dinner had ample options, and everything was fresh. They had local cuisine at times which was great (empanadas, tamales, flan). Sometimes the food was so so, and other days fantastic. Fresh fish was usually available at each meal. Chicken and beef seemed to rotate, and pork was around a lot. They use flavours and spices in their cooking- so things are not bland, which was welcome!
We did the 8 hour day trip to see the West side of the tour. I recommend it. It takes you to the iguana farm, a rainforest where you can hold monkeys or have a bird sit on your shoulder, a cameo factory, Rum cake and rum shop and more. They stop at the sister resort for lunch (Henry Morgan). This resort is on a nice beach, but surrounded by other resorts, and quite dated. Let's just say that we were very happy with our choice of the modern and private location of Media Luna!
The trip ends with you being able to walk around. We bought vanilla extract and rum at the convenience store for much less than the tourist shops. We also bought snorkel gear for $20, as we forgot ours, and were not keen on renting. $20 is cheaper than renting anyways!

Good to know:
-Snacks are served at the bar about an hour before lunch and dinner
-Breakfast, lunch and dinner are at set times. Not a big deal- just something to keep in mind
-US money is accepted everywhere here, as well as local currency
-No-see-ems hit at dusk. Wear bug spray if you are out after 4pm
-The TV's get all of the US/Canada channels, in addition to local feed.
-Alcohol is not served after 11pm
-When you leave, each person needs to pay a $40 US departure fee. You can pay this with a MC or US cash.

Room Tip: Either pay more for the ocean front, or keep the standard cabanas. The ocean view rooms are pretty...

The resort is beautiful - be sure to reserve ocean front it's worth it. At Media Luna you wake up and see the ocean from bed or take a shower and have a spectacular view of the ocean. Gorgeous flowers grow everywhere on the grounds. The staff are always finding new ways to please the guests. Sophie from Nolitours is adorable and Daniela and Kevin from the dive shop are the best people to go diving, snorkeling or boating with. Octencia/Rose was born on the island and is the perfect guide for an island tour. There is a wide selection of food to choose from contrary to harsh reviews. Gios has the best seafood anywhere on the island. We met other guests from Rome and Quebec and different parts of Ontario and New Brunswick. I enjoyed the locals and their rich culture and history immensely. The weather was perfect between 28 and 29 degrees c. A truly memorable place thanks for having us!

Room Tip: Ocean front rooms are the best.

We are a group of 50 somethings with one 40 something. We stayed the last week of Feb and first week of March. We loved it! We were looking for the holy grail of beach snorkeling and did we find it! We also scuba and that didn't disappoint however be aware that the dive package does not include BCD and regulator. For that you must pay an additional $15.00 per single dive or $20.00 per day. We purchased a 10 dive package through Nolitours and hoped my wife and I could split it but the dive staff were not flexible on that like all other dive packages I've purchased. There was no air one day so we lost a dive and didn't get offered any compensation. I only used 6 of the 10 dives so it wasn't much of a savings.
We dove right off the dock and it was a short 4 or 5 minute flipper to the reef which was amazing. Eels, lobsters, lion fish, sting rays and several different types of fishes. The water was so warm you didn't need a wet suit. 79 degrees I was told. The reef drops off to well over 100 feet if you want with lots to see. The snorkelers can be seen hovering over the edge of the reef above watching you wishing they were diving. We did lots of snorkeling right off the beach as well and you wont be disappointed. You can snorkel all the way out to the drop off which is approx. 200 yards with lots to look at on the way as the depth gradually increases to about 15 feet then plummets all the way to China. The bay is very calm every day as it is protected on 3 sides from the wind. This is the absolute best off the beach snorkeling vacation we have had in 15 years.
We found the resort very laid back and relaxing and mostly sat in the shade and read until we got the urge to go snorkeling but one day we got the urge to explore. We hired a driver by the name of Lonnie with his large suv with excellent air conditioning and loads of room for 4 people, he picked us up at 10 and we toured the Island all day stopping here and there. He's the guy. Lived there all his life and gives an excellent tour for $100.00. Speaks both English and Spanish. Ask Becky ( who is first rate) to set you up.

We recognize the resort staff does listen to feedback. We loved it, but some suggestions are:
-more water bottles in fridge in room, and beer!
-beach bar could have self serve water and soft drink options
-more shade would be appreciated (although staff were trying to address this)
-after washing bathing suits in shower, fabric left an odour
-would be easier on staff to bring a pitcher of water or carafe of wine to table instead of individual glasses
-food was good but some dishes were over salted
-fruit selection very good but no yoghurt
-serve real fruit juices; drop the tang
-bacon was sometimes crisp and excellent, and some days raw however a reviewer had the excellent idea of bringing it to the pasta bar to cook it more.

Loved it overall. None of us had any stomach issues. Great staff! Will return if there are ever direct flights from Winnipeg. Going through Toronto is a hassle and adds extra expense.
