“Best Hotel in West End”
Reviewed April 27, 2013 via mobile

Roatan has always been a perfect vacation destination, and staying at the Half Moon Resort just made my vacation outstanding... It has comfortable rooms to relax and enjoy nature, hammocks outside the cabins that make the experience of napping by the ocean priceless, friendly staff that helped me and assisted during the entire week with a smile... This hotel has the best food in the area I LOVE IT! Great location, I walked to the bars in West End... BEAUTIFUL views... Overall my experience in this hotel was unbelievable I had the best time, the owners were great and personally invited me to visit them next year, and I CAN'T WAIT...
I Totally recommend Half Moon Resort!!!

Lovely location - location location, location! but....Accommodations are not kept up, getting run down furniture inside the cabins and chaise lounge chairs outside in bad repair and need replacing. Needs an injection of investment capitol to maintain/fix the place up.
Fabulous staff - very friendly and helpful to myself and my family. We enjoyed some reasonably good food in the restaurant (only one bad meal during our stay). Unfortunately the owner (who I was not aware was the owner because he was one of many who took tip money from me during our stay while we were staying there for five days handed me an invoice at the end and added a built in cost for gratuities! There are similar reasonably priced accommodations in the area that are in better shape and the owner won't rip you off when you check out!

We stayed here for just one night while we were off resort and exploring. We showed up mid afternoon looking for a room for 4 overnight. It was the beginning of spring break so the island was packed but we ended up getting a room that technically we should only have had 3 people in. When I say rustic I mean see through the floorboards while you're in the bathroom but there's beds and a/c. The view of the beach and ocean is definitely the highlight of the place. You can order food or drinks and sit. Just gorgeous! Also a place to swim!

I have not stayed at the resort but the property is amazing!

We spent a week at Half Moon Resort in West End, Roatan and loved it. Mind you this is not 5 star accommodations but it was exactly what we wanted. Rene and Mathilde (son & daughter of owner) were wonderful, the whole staff would do anything to make our stay great. Expect a clean room, working AC, hot showers and a hammock on your deck. You can walk to great food, bars & diving. You can snorkel right from the resort. There is a great old sailboat anchored off the resort with a rope swing off the tilted mast. We walked to West Bay along the shore one day. Had lunch in West Bay and then sunned and swam at the beach. Time to go back, wife and I took a water taxi for $6, daughter and friend (both 19 yr old girls) walked back by themselves. No problems of any kind. It is not recommended to take that walk at night but very safe during the day. The girls went back to West Bay on a different day by themselves and we had no worried, just told them to meet us at Tita's by 5. We ate food from several of the evening street vendors and loved it all. I know that you will be warned not to eat salad and things like that but we had no problems. We had fruit and cinnamon rolls for breakfast 2 of the days. You can buy a watermelon from a street vendor and keep it in your room overnight, it will be chilled by morning. We borrowed a knife from the restaurant and sliced it into quarters on the table on our deck. Get the cinnamon rolls from Creole Rotisserie, they are great. be sure to get there soon after dark or they will be gone. Creole Rotisserie is also good for dinner, quarter chicken dinner for around $5. I had the burrito, great. One girl had the chicken quesadilla and it was so good we went back another night just for that. At them while walking to our favorite street taco vender, they are next to the Blue Channel Pizza place. You can get a beer at Half Moon for $2.50. You can get a beer at a store in town for $1.50. On our last day in town we saw a sign that said not to drink on the street because the police can fine you, we did not have that problem. We slept well, ate well, avoided most sunburn, and most bugs but you really do need bug spray. There's a lot more to tell but mostly you should go. You should feel safe walking the main street in West End at any time. Your kids should be safe too. Go! Stay at Half Moon Resort. Sleep well and relax.

Room Tip: The rooms on the water are smaller. We had a room with 3 double beds. It was elevated but you didn...

We returned to Half Moon Resort this year after an equally memorable trip last year. A collague recommended it to me and we in turn have recommended it to many others. The snorkeling is phenomenal. The scenery beautiful. It is the perfect place to relax in the sun. And a short walk takes you to everything along the half moon bay main street. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The coconut shrimp at the restaurant is definitely worth trying.

The rooms are clean and basic, but this is not a luxury hotel. It's definitely more humble, but the benefits of snorkeling, the views of the bay, and the location definitely are worth the very affordable price.

Other recs: Creole's Rotisserie Chicken, Cannibal's Fish Tacos, baleadas from any stand or person making them, and the happy hour at Sundowners, if for no other reason than the people-watching

Thanks to other tripadvisor reviews, we were lucky enough to find this GEM of a small resort in Half Moon Bay on the island of Roatan. We could not have been more happy with our choice!! This is a wonderful family operated resort and restaurant - Rene and Mathilde, whose father began the resort 20 years ago, are personable, fun, and go out of their way to make sure your stay is relaxing and fun. They speak perfect English, and know their resort, Half Moon Bay, Roatan, and were helpful with tips on getting to the ferry where we went to the mainland for a a few days. The entire staff here are superb - Anthony, Sean, Alex - thanks for all the fun. We felt very very SAFE here, and as Americans we were of course worried about the new State Dept Travel Warning - we had never been to Honduras, and after reading the ominous sounding warning, we were a bit worried to say the least. Half Moon Bay is an excellent choice on the island, with many Americans, Europeans, and Canadians - a laid back, island vibe with local restaurants and shops, a beautiful beach and snorkeling in the bay. The Honduran people are gracious and kind and we felt very safe, with the usual precautions for traveling. Half Moon Resort was perfect for us - Cabin rooms with 2 beds, shower, and a shared porch with hammock. This is not on a 'beach' but, overlooks the water and is simply a BEAUTIFUL view. We liked this area much BETTER than the beach, as we were directly ON the water. There are lounge chairs in a sandy area, and on a large deck, and steps leading down into the water for swimming and snorkeling literally steps from your room. The swimming is great, sandy bottom at the dock, no need for water shoes. There is a floating dock one can swim to, and also a defunct sailboat that has been turned into a water playground - with a rope swing, sunning deck, ladders and a jumping platform high off the water. Great fun for adults and kids alike and will keep you occupied for many days! The snorkeling in the bay is fantastic, and the reef beautiful. The resort provides FREE snorkel gear. We snorkeled every single day, sometimes more than once a day - it's literally right off your room. We saw hundreds of colorful tropical fish on the reef, plus a barracuda, octopus, sea snakes, dolphins, and more. There are also a couple of kayaks free to use as well to paddle around the calm bay. We loved the chairs, the sun, the lush grounds (plenty of sun if you want it, or shady trees for reading). Do be aware that the resort does bring in small groups from cruise ships on some days, to snorkel. The cruisers bring with them some vendors - children offering island jewelry, and women offering hair braiding or massages. The cruise passengers are allowed to use the beach chairs, while they are snorkeling and swimming - so it's important to be aware that if you plan to sun and lounge on a 'cruise day' you need to put out towels to claim your chairs early enough before they get in (varied from 9-11 ish). This was not intrusive, and we felt it was fun, as we had interesting conversations with some cruisers - and of course, we loved to see the extra business to support this wonderful family resort. Just remember to put out towels and 'claim' your favorite spot, and you'll be fine. Speaking of towels, you will need to bring your own beach towels, as they don't provide them. As for the cruisers, there were not a LOT of cruisers - a general number was 20 or 25 people or so -- so by no means disruptive, though it did change the level of activity around the quiet and relaxing resort for a few hours on the days they appeared. The staff knows when to expect them, and would tell us a ship was coming in the next day. We stayed 6 days, and I think we had ships on 3 of those days. Our room was not luxurious (think cabin) so a little rough around the edges, but was everything we needed and expected for the money - such a great deal! It was clean, and cleaned every day with fresh towels and the sand was swept out of the room. We had AC that worked to truly chill the room on hot days, as well as a ceiling fan if you want to have the hum of the AC off. The room is very safe with mesh screen, and a larger metal screen on the three windows as well as the typical Honduran heavy louvered wooden shutters that can be latched shut at night, or if you leave the room. We felt very secure there, and never had a single issue regarding safety, theft, or anything of that sort. Our cabin housed two rooms - side by side. Privacy is not the best, as the walls are pretty thin and therefore the AC and fan help at night for additional privacy. During the cruise days, there will be people on the property, and on non-cruise days it's very quiet. Regardless, it is always relaxing, and beautiful. Service is stellar - we even had drinks delivered to us down at the swim dock while we were in the water! Our last night, we were served drinks out on the dock, with candlelight - quite romantic. The restaurant is really GOOD, with a nice selection of foods, and fair prices. We ate in town for 'street food' - try Cindy's Place for her Super Taco Supreme $3.50 fed us BOTH for lunch - and the little blue shack with a white railing for breakfast bealeados (tortilla with egg, cheese and chorizo sausage) beyond delicious and only $1.75!!! We ate so inexpensively, and then had great dinners around town - but often found ourselves wanting to head back to Half Moon Bay restaurant for it's great food, and lovely setting right out over the water! Really reasonable prices and every item we ordered was delicious - fresh fish, calamari, and more! You'll find yourself wanting to head back "home" to eat, even with all the wonderful choices in town. The bar too is reasonable, though several days we purchased rum in town at the store in order to save some money and make drinks in the room. The bar closes about 10 pm. The restaurant is relaxing, romantic and beautiful. I just cannot say enough wonderful things about Rene, Mathilde and their staff. This place is a true find!!!! Do NOT hesitate to visit Roatan, and Half Moon Bay. If you want a place on the 'edge' of the busy tourist town, this is the perfect choice. It is a 7 minute walk into town, which we did several times each day. LOVED IT!!! Hope to go back someday!!
