Lead a group of 12 divers to Hotel Guanaja June 22-29. Resort blends nicely into the landscape. Rooms are roomy and clean with a balcony that overlooks the water. Wilson and Gabbi, along with the rest of the staff, were very attentive to our comfort, needs and desires. No request was too big that they didn’t go above and beyond to take care of.
Meals consisted of local fare, (mostly chicken, pork and fish), which everyone found to be very tasty and filling. For thosewho did not eat what was on the main course other selections were readily available. Bar stayed open until the last person decided to call it a night .
Dive sites on the south eastern side of the island are close, about a 10 to 20 minute boat ride away. We didn’t get to do much diving on this side of the island due to choppy surface conditions and poor underwater visibility. The reefs on both sides of the island are very healthy with little to no sign of coral bleaching. Most of our dives were on the north side. Getting there took about 45 minutes of so. Mack, the Dive Master, gave good briefings about the site and set depths and times to return back to the boat. Once we were under the boat we were free to explore the area on our own allowing all of our dives to last an hour to an hour and a half.
If there were one disappointing thing about diving Guanaja it would be the fish life. Saw very little in the way of adult or schooling fishes due to subsistence fishing. Most fish life consisted of juveniles and intermediate aged fish which were everywhere .We did see several nurse sharks, 2 Midnight Blue Parrot Fish and couple of Barracuda during the week. A designated no fishing area on the northeast side of the island has been created so hopefully this is start in the right direction to address the issue.
Would I go back? Without a doubt!! I highly recommend the resort to anyone thinking of diving Guanaja!
