“Great experience at Tikal Inn”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 8, 2012

Our stay at Tikal Inn was arranged by Turansa Tours. Everything went very well. We flew from Guatemala City on the 6:30 am flight and were picked up by representatives from Tikal Inn. A guide provided some commentary as we drove from Flores to the park. After dropping our luggage at the hotel we had a four hour guided tour with one of the guides employed by Tikal Inn. Nixon, an archeology student, provided some interesting details about the Mayan culture. He was also very good at spotting birds and we saw all kinds including a Keel-billed Toucan. After walking in 40 degree heat for four hours we were exhausted and so were very pleased to arrive back at the hotel for lunch. Our friendly waiter recommended that we start our meal with a lemonade. Perfect! Lunch, included with our package, was good. Our rooms were ready as soon as we finished lunch. After being shown our rooms by friendly young men we slipped into our bathing suits and jumped in the pool. Wonderful! We spent the rest of the day lounging by the pool. Many of the other guests chose to go on the sunset tour but we didn't want to budge from our comfortable surroundings. Over dinner, Spanish omlettes that were very good, Juan, the head guide, came by to talk a bit about the sunrise tour that we'd signed up for, reminding us to bring water as it would not be available early in the morning. At 4:00 the next morning we were woken with a knock on our door and fifteen minutes later were walking through the dark jungle. It was amazing to listen to th night sounds, including a murmuring janguar. Juan was an excellent guide and filled in many more details about Tikal and Mayan life. The pancake breakfast back at the hotel was very good. Our flight back to Guatemala City wasn't until 5:00 pm so we spent the rest of the day once again lounging by the pool, as did many of the other guests. A short but wonderful trip into the jungle. Well worth the $375 per person which we paid.

We stayed in the Tikal Inn, in April 2012, and liked it. The only reason I am not giving 5 stars is because its a basic place, and we were very happy to stay there, but it can't reach "out of this world" b/c it is pretty basic.

I spent a lot of time debating to stay in the park, or at a nicer place outside of the park. For example, the serious competition was the Camino Real which offers lake rides as well, and is half way to the park (so 30 min. drive instead of 60 from Flores). It was extremely hard to compare prices/packages b/c each place offered very slightly different things: meals included/not; tour cost included/not. Like how much would meals add up to anyhow? take the meals included or not (scratches head - answer below). So I gave up on that.

What I can say about Tikal Inn is: its basic but clean. It is in the park and this is awesome, awesome - no schlepping around, losing 2 hours in travel, haggling prices, and entertaining a kid on the way to and there; no waiting around for a bus to take you back, or hurrying your sightseeing so you can catch a bus. Stay in the park!!!!

Also, the pool is great (don't look too close at it, don't think about it - just enjoy a cooling swim!) Essential for child-entertainment.

I thought I read that the food at Jaguar Inn was good, but this seems to be an error - it was basic and I am sorry we ate there b/c Tikal Inn has some awesome fish, awesome tacos. We took the package with the food, b/c it was required for the free tour (the whole pricing things just made me crazy) - but I think the variety is much much greater w/o the food package - lots of choices (if they have them available at that moment ;-)

Tikal Inn and the folks there are pretty laid back - so don't expect to rush too much (except, be at the sunrise tour at 4am b/c they leave on time for that - even though I swear I read that someone complained they leave late?). Bring a high quality camera, and be careful. If you are afraid of heights, you are herewith forewarned - but its worth it.

Also, the staff at the hotel helped us out when we ran out of cash - very kind of them. And really, the difference of 100 meters between the 1st and 3rd hotel should not influence your decision. The Jaguar Inn seems not at nice as Tikal, but I can't say first-hand as we just ate in the resturant. We arrived on the 6:30am flight from Guate City, stayed 1 night, and left on the 8pm flight - so 2 full days. It was enough, though if I had more time, I would have sought out the crocodile pond I saw on the Tikal Park map.

Room Tip: We took a bungalow on the pool - which is a great choice - the people who took rooms at the back, ho...

This hotel is great if you don't need TV and want the nature feel with the restaurant amenities. The most convenient part is the proximity to the park and the ability to buy gifts in a nearby complex. The restaurant provided good sized food portions with reasonable prices and good quality, though I would have liked to see more local cuisine. The hotel staff was friendly and helpful. Housing was nice and relaxing and at night one could listen to the jungle (monkeys and birds, kinda in a distance so it wasn't disturbing). Overall, I enjoyed the place and anyone looking for a nice hotel with a touch of a jungle experience this is a great choice. Not recommended for spoiled American tourists.

Room Tip: I liked the cottage. It had that jungle feel.

It is one of the three lodges in the Tikal National Park. We stayed here for 2 nights in April 2012. It is the furthest lodge away from the actual entrance to Tikal. We are talking maybe 300-400 yards, but it is dusty unpaved road with no shade and in the heat of the day or if you are carrying a load (in my case - 4yr old) it makes a difference.
The good: booked the hotel over e-mail and communication was responsive; at the hotel itself the stand out is the big pool; room was clean and beds were reasonably comfortable.
The bad: food was rather disappointing and expensive, while the choice is very limited; no avocado in the midst of the season; fruit platter was literally three small pieces of fruit - definitely not what you expect; internet is very slow and available only from 10-12AM and 18-22PM; hotel grounds are rather open to the sun, offer little shade or just space for a walk.
Transfer to and from hotel was also pricey - 60USD from Flores and 90USD to Belize border.
We opted for their breakfast/dinner included package, which also gives you the sunrise/sunset tour in Tikal, however regretted it. I already wrote about the food. The guide on the sunrise tour that we took was rather mediocre at best - left us behind in pitch black with 4yr old on the way to Tikal, while later told us dubious jokes about the Spanish who help in Tikal restoration, but little about Tikal itself.
Acclaimed guide Roxy Ortiz apparently runs tours from Tikal Inn. We tried to book her couple of weeks in advance, but as we have latter learned her family are the owners of Tikal Inn, hence she has little (if any) incentive to compete with Tikal Inn packages (we did communicate to her that we will be staying in Tikal Inn). If you opt for Tikal Inn package or tour, you are probably decreasing your chances that Roxy will be interested in accompanying you. What is most disappointing - Roxy would not even bother to respond to our further emails.

Room Tip: Stairs to the 2nd floor were rather steep and not comfortable. Thus if you have any mobility issues...

Tikal Inn staff could not be better. The servers in the restaurant and especially Milton at the front desk. I made a mistake with my reservation at the height of the season and they found a way to accommodate after all. I left travel papers behind and Milton went to quite a bit of trouble to help get them back to me in Flores. I had a great time attempting to use my limited Spanish, but there were plenty of fluent English speakers too. The food was good and the room was clean. The staff is outstanding.

Stayed here two nights and i can't say anything bad about this place. Room was large and clean. Restaurant served huge portions of really good food. We did not take a package deal and had the full choice from the extensive menu. The waiters where brilliant, really helpful and tried hard to understand our very poor Spanish and taught us some new words.

While its never nice getting up at 4.00 am in the morning you will be making a huge mistake if you decide against the sunrise tour. Howler monkeys screaming a few feet away as you trek through the jungle in the dark (take a torch). You then climb to the top of temple 4, about 60 metres and you end up above the jungle canopy for a breathtaking view of the sunrise over the ruins.

Put it on your bucket list?

Lastly the pool! What a delight clean, cool and very inviting. Just the thing after an afternoon exploring the ruins.

Absolutely loved this hotel. The staff is absolutely wonderful. They are genuinely kind and gracious. The food was great and I'm a chef by profession. The Bungalow rooms are large, but due their open screens at the top of the walls, you can hear people next door. Didn't bother me though. The pool was fabulous. Hot water is a little sporadic, mainly due to the turning off of electricity during certain times. However, if I had been more observant, I could have planned my showers to maximize when water was hot. This is a very remote and special location therefore they use generators for their electricity.
