My wife and I visited Tikal on our recent trip to Belize in February 2013. We stayed in San Ignacio Cayo which is in Belize. We took a day tour with Cayo Adventure Tours who are based in San Ignacio Cayo Belize. It is very close from the Cayo to the border of Guatemala. The tour company takes care of all of the formalities of the border crossing. We just stood around and took pictures. On the Guatemala side of the border our tour company picked up a Guatemalan Guide. He was the one who showed us around Tikal. Our Belize guide and driver was Dora and our Guatemalan guide was Benny. These guides are great. You don't do a thing but enjoy. Tikal is cool in two ways. It is a very interesting Mayan site and there sure is plenty of stuff to climb. What was really interesting is that it was a wildlife tour as well. The Guatemalans have protected the Tikal area for eons. There is no hunting or poaching. There are animals are strolloing around everywhere. We saw turkeys, coatimundis, toucans, woodpeckers, humming birds, spider monkeys, hawks, and howler monkeys. On the way back they fed us lunch in Guatemala (very nice) and then took us back to the hotel. A full day trip. A nice stroll around amazing scenery while looking at great animals. The cost for the tour is very cheap and is worth every penny. These guides make their living this way and it was an honor to be their guests. Go enjoy.

You must go if you visit Guatemala, It is beautiful not a hard hike, It can get tiresome climbing the temples but if you hydrate and pace yourself you should be fine. THEY SELL BEER IN THE PARK, yes I saw at least on jungle bar.

Tikal is truly an incredible place to visit. The site is located in the middle of the jungle so it's a great experience trekking through the jungle and exploring the temples. It is a bit of a journey to get to Tikal but i assure you it's worth it. We took a 12 hour bus from Playa Del Carmen to Palenque, then another 7 hours on a bus/boat to get to Flores. From Flores it's another 90 minutes to Tikal. Anyhow, my point is that considering the long journey we took it was completely worth it :)

We arrived at Tikal at 6:00am and stayed until 1:00pm. That was enough time to explore most of the ruins but i did want to stay longer to explore more of the jungle. Unfortunately we had to get back to Flores. The temples are amazing, especially in The Great Plaza. There isn't much for carvings and artwork but the sheer size and design of the structures are what is so amazing. Apparently only 20% of Tikal has been restored so you will frequently come across unrestored or partially restored ruins. The unrestored ruins just look like dirt mounds until you inspect them closely. I could see how it would be possible to walk right by an unrestored ruin and have no idea. Tikal gets plenty of visitors but once you start walking on the jungle paths you can easily go long periods of time without seeing anyone else.

I had read some negative comments about San Juan travel agency yet we still decided to book our round trip transportation through them. I'm happy to report that they picked us up on time and the ride to/back from Tikal went without a hitch (Well except for the random police road stop. We all had to get out of the bus so the police could search the bus and our bags. Luckily there were no issues).

Amazing structure and history about the plaza and the echoes and architecture of the buildings. To understand the plaza better go with a guide.

Viewing and walking around the Great Plaza at Tikal gives you a sense of how advanced and extensive the Mayan culture was.
