“Too much trash!”
Reviewed May 29, 2012

This was a strenous and very pretty hike (though the clouds settled in at the top so unfortunately we couldn't see Santiaguito erupting). But the trail is lined with trash from the locals from the nearby village who hike to the top for ceremonies: food wrappers, cans, bottles, you name it. This definitely detracted from the beauty of the mountain.

“Wow. What a challenge!”
Reviewed February 19, 2012

This is a tough climb, much of it very steep. Breathtaking views, and even a view of an active volcano that erupts every half hour or so. When you come down, it can be a little tricky getting a ride back to town.

“Difficult hike, but well worth it”
Reviewed January 19, 2012

The hike is difficult, but definitely doable and well worth it. It took us apprx 4.5h up and 3.5h down. Though we are all very fit, we had to stop once in a while to catch the breath, b/c of the altitude. The elevation at the starting point is 2.5 km and at the top it’s almost 3.8 km. We were lucky with the weather, it wasn’t cold, windy or rainy. The trail closer to the top was slippery, so good hiking boots are a must. We were picked up around 5 am from Casa Renaissance, and started the hike at 5:30 am. We got to the top right on time to watch Santiagito’s small eruption. 20 min later clouds started to come in, and very soon Santiagito and near by craters were completely covered. Still it was really cool to be above the clouds and to enjoy amazing views. Overall we had great experience thanks to William from Altiplanos tour agency altiplanos.com.gt and to our guide Carlos.
