La Casa Rosada is a few hundred meters from the downtown wharf in Livingston and is one of the only ones located on the Rio Dulce itself. What makes this hotel special is that the rooms are actually small thatched wood huts "hidden" in a tropical garden. The huts themselves are not very large, but all have two double beds and come with ceiling fans. All toilets and showers are shared, but these are very clean and the showers have plenty of hot water. In the restaurant courtyard is a lovely patio restaurant which serves excellent food, and features the local Garifuna specialty, tapado, which is like a bouillabaise (i.e. seafood and fish) but cooked in a coconut milk broth. Delicious! The hotel grounds are well kept and there are lounge chairs from which you can watch the activity on the river. Better yet, the hotel has a private wharf, at the end of which is a gazebo with a hammock. A great way of watching the sunset. The friendly owner will gladly phone to have the boats which do the Livingston - Rio Dulce run pick you up right at the hotel wharf, which saves you the walk back into town. At 20$/single, this is a sweet deal!

On a whim we hopped a boat to Livingston and followed a tip to La Casa Rosada. It's unpretentious from the street, but lush and welcoming beyond. They don't lie about having the best coffee either! I'm still dreaming of their lattes. Seven of us arrived and had no trouble securing double rooms for the night, and quite reasonably, $16 US per double! The staff were incredibly friendly and willing to share information and answer questions. The food was great, don't miss the rolls. I would definitely make the trip just to stay here again!

We loved our stay here. In steamy and sometimes crowded Livingston, the shady patio, beautiful gardens, and breezes from the river mouth directly behind the hotel created a cool and pleasant oasis. The little two-person cabanas have a rustic style but are comfortable and beautifully appointed, as are the shared bath cabanas. Excellent meals are served by gracious servers on the shady patio. Javier and Sandra, the owners, are very present and work hard to please. They speak good English and other languages as well. I accidentally left my wallet when catching an early boat and did not discover it until after reaching Puerto Barrio; Javier arranged safe transport for it to my hotel in Antigua, and called to make sure I had received it. When all the cabanas are booked, the owners rent beds in a large dormitory that is part of their own house. These beds are well spaced out and have some partitions, so there is some privacy. A very good choice in Livingston and, at $20 for two, a good value.

Casa Rosada is a comfortable place to stay in Livingston, but it is most memorable to me as a result of the graciousness of the owners. Somewhere on a bus in Guatemala, I had lost my cosmetics case, which contained a needed prescription. I wasn't able to find it in any of the local drugstores, so the owner, Javier made some calls to neighboring towns to try to find it for me. He found it in a town located half an hour away by boat, which he got someone to deliver to me in the middle of rainstorm! Not only were the owners helpful beyond expectation and their restaurant top-notch, but after 6 weeks in Guatemala, I had the most peaceful sleep at Casa Rosada, tucked safely under the mosquito nets, knowing that I wouldn't wake up with any more bug bites!

We landed in Livingston by accident - after missing the last boat on the Rio Dulce and had to spend the night. The hotel is charming: small double-bedded cabins with mosquito nets, hand-painted furniture, and thatched roofs. The shared bathrooms are clean though the electric showers (common in C.A) were disappointing. Even in the hot weather of Livingston, a warm shower can come in handy. The restaurant at Casa Rosada is lovely and eating their fish soup on the patio with the breeze blowing over the ocean was a great way to end our trip. The banana pancakes were great and Javier and his family have made a welcoming home (away from home).
