I stayed at Posada de los Volcanes for the final segment of my tour of Guatemala. I selected the hotel based on the overwhelming positive experiences previous guests noted here on TripAdvisor.

E-mail communication with hotel personnel was fast and efficient. In order to secure my reservation, a staff member requested that I pay 50% of the expected bill with a credit card, which I agreed to do. For me, this was $75.

Upon arriving at the hotel, I paid the remaining 50% of the bill ($75) with US Dollars. I also had the option of paying the remaining 50% with Guatemala Quetzales. (Please note that credit cards are not accepted to pay the balance of your bill when you arrive at the hotel, only Dollars or Quetzales. This was CLEARLY explained in the e-mail communication I had with hotel staff long before I arrived.)

I was given a choice of four breakfasts at the hotel. And each morning, I chose the traditional Guatemalan, or El Chapin, breakfast: Scrambled eggs, cooked sweet bananas, refried beans, toast with butter and strawberry preserves, juice, and coffee. It wasn't a massive amount of food, but was enough to get me out the door and started with my day each morning.

My room featured a firm bed with great pillows and linens. The room had a television with channels in english (BBC), and a three-speed ceiling fan. There was no telephone, clock, air conditioning, or safety box in the room. However, the windows were a combination of screen and glass, and could be slid open and closed as I wanted. With the screened windows and ceiling fan, it only took a moment or two to freshen and cool the air in the afternoons.

In the bathroom, the towels were large and fluffy, and there was very ample hot water and strong water pressure in the shower. The bathroom and entire room was tiled very professionally, and added a sense of luxury to a room that I was only paying $50 a night for. The room, bathroom, and entire hotel was VERY clean throughout.

There was a common computer in the breezeway downstairs for guests to use, and the internet connection was fast and reliable.

The hotel is located very close to the boat docks of Panajachel on the shore of Lake Atitlan, and it never took me more than 5 minutes to walk to the docks to use public transport for trips across the lake to the other side.

A really great aspect about the hotel is that it has its own in-house tour and shuttle service. Want to go shopping in Chichicastenango? No problem. Need a shuttle from Panajachel to Guatemala City? No problem. Want to take a boat tour of the most popular communities on the shores of Lake Atitlan? No problem. Want to climb the San Pedro volcano? No problem. These, and many other tours and transfers, are available simply by paying some money to staff in reception, who will write you a ticket and tell you where to be at what time with your ticket in your hand.

Posada de los Volcanes has been in business since 1993, and many travelers pass right through Panajachel with intentions of staying on the more hedonistic and drug and alcohol fueled other side of Lake Atitlan (San Pedro La Laguna, are you listening?) That's fine with me, because as long as that continues to happen, there will always be a room available for me (and you) at Posada de los Volcanes!

PS: Try VERY hard to book Room 401, 402, or 403 for your stay at Posada de los Volcanes. The views of the nearby volcanoes and Lake Atitlan are spectacular from that level!

For the price this hotel is a gem. It is maintained in an immaculate condition and its location is within walkr.ing distance of the main features of the town. The upper stories have a fronting balcony which afford an opportunity to relax and take in a bit of the sounds of the main street. Beyond its physical features its most important asset is that the staff bends over backwards to maintain the family atmosphere that is obviously the owners primary vision. The staff is also knowledgeable of things to do in the area and, importantly, the price you should be paying. If we ever returned here we wouldn't think of staying anywhere else. It is fully deserving of Trip Advisor's 2013 certificate of excellence, the third year in a row it has been given this honor.

We have been traveling to Guatemala annually for 15 years. Posada de los Volcanes has been our home away from home while in Pana for the past 10 years. Guess the word is out - since we are sitting in the lobby celebrating Posada de los Volcanes being the 2013 Winner - Trip Advisor travelers' choice. Congrats to Julio, Francisco, Jeannette, Paco (the parrot) and all the staff that provide friendly good service in this comfortable, family owned Posada.

We stayed almost one week there and everything was perfect.
We never got a problem there, just good memories.
All staff is super nice and ready to help all the time.
Our room was on second floor with a little balcony to seat, read or drink a coffee.
The place was always very clean.

I stayed here two nights in December '12. The hotel is very nice and clean. The front staff is very helpful. The only complaint I have with this hotel is that the walls are very thin, and the showers are only seperated by a thin wall that is not even ceiling high. Its not terrible but anything done in the bathroom will be heard by someon in the other rooms bathroom. Great landing spot before experiencing places on the lake.
