When I went, there were hundreds and hundreds of different butterflies flying around. It was magical. I've been told since that they are out and about in the morning. Good thing to know, otherwise, it can be pretty boring.

Presuming this is the butterfly house at the Reserva Natural Atitlan (could there really be more than one?), I highly recommend giving this one a pass. The reserve itself is nice - we had a nice walk through, looking at the flowers, trying to spot birds, seeing the monkeys and coatamundi and waterfalls, and walking over the cool suspension bridges.

We went for the butterfly sanctuary and it was a big let down because: there were almost no butterflies in it. They initially had all the right things that you see at most butterfly sanctuaries- the double doors to keep any from getting out, the displays of chrysalises, sponges with food on them for butterfies.

But there were no butterflies. Which is interesting, because the rest of the reserve had them all over the place. There were some on the outside hoping to get in. But there were, seriously, only like 4 that we saw in the whole thing. We did, however, see a nice dead mouse on the floor by the bathroom. Did he scare all the butterflies away?

It wasn't horrible, but just not really worth the effort to walk through it. Mostly just a let down. Lucky the rest of the reserve is decent.
