Owner description: The Atitlan Nature Reserve is both a must for visitors of Lake Atitlan and a force in the environmental cause: Atitlan Azul. It is an extraordinary gate to the magnificent Lake Atitlan and its spectacular volcanoes. Its zip lines, butterfly preserve, trails, hanging bridges and lodgings bring you in close contact with nature. On the zip lines you fly above waterfalls, coffee groves, oak stands and the steep cliffs that guard the lake. At the Butterfly Geodome you enjoy the colors and forms of hundreds of butterflies surrounded by flowers and the sounds of water. Humming birds and the murmur of the river accompany you while you have lunch, coffee or a drink, then you continue to explore the diversity and beauty of this natural wonder. At night, the crickets, owls and the sounds of the night will be your company in our lodging. The Reserve supports the work of scientist and students concerned with biodiversity and environmental degradation.

Didn't expect to find such an awesome place so close to Panajachel. Only a 5 minute tuk tuk drive from Pana, it's well worth a visit for flora and fauna lovers as well as adventure seekers. Although we didn't t do the zip line, we talked to people coming off who raved about the speed over several canyons. Admission was 55Q each (about$7.50) which did not include the zip line. There's a small patio restaurant in a great setting....flowering vines for shade with enormous hummingbirds seeking nectar. We took the main trail, a loop that took us through jungle-like vegetation, crossed about 6 swinging bridges over deep chasms and waterfalls. The trail was well-marked and although lots of ups and downs, was not difficult even for 75+ travelers. The real gem, however, was the butterfly conservatory housed in a brand new dome. Gorgeous flowers and running water plus the perennial spring climate makes this the perfect habitat for numerous varieties of "mariposa" including several discovered here. To do the park justice, allow yourselves 2 to 3 hours.

Allow two hours, but would be easy to spend some more time there.

One son and the wife went on the long zip wire tour (7 zips in total) whilst I went with other son on the trail. Cost around 700 quetzales in total.

It was very quiet when we went, but still advance booking recommended for zip (one group from our hotel went the next day - a group of 40 went before them, and so zip fully booked). High safety standards.

The first 30 mins of the trail is the same for walkers and zippers, so we went together. In a few minutes you reach a spot where the spider monkeys and coitis/racoons know you're coming with bananas (cheap and available from the cafe in the visitor centre). It's fun to watch the spider monkeys, but its more of a safari park experience than a real 'in the wild' feeling. The next 20 minutes or so of walking is steep, energetic but great fun - some fab wooden plank bridges over ravines and waterfalls. Closed in with wire mesh walls, perfectly safe, but still a touch of Indiana Jones. All through a tropical forest environment, so great fun, tho little wildlife spotted. When we left the zippers - who had to climb quite a bit further - the rest of the trail was not nearly as exciting or interesting. That first half is definitely the best, and I would almost recommend walkers returning to the centre the same way rather than carry on.

Back at the centre whilst waiting for the zippers, we sat and drank in the covered outside area of the cafe - surrounded by exotic plants that visibly hold wells of liquid nectar. We watched fascinated and beguiled by a great display of hummingbirds flitting in and out, sometimes hovering inches in front of us as they supped the flowers. At least 3 or 4 varieties of humming birds were spotted.

The butterfly house is small but adds extra value to the visit - few varieties, but exotic and tropical.

Just a 10 Quetzales (per person) trip by tuk tuk from Pana. Well worth it.

With the story of the preserve coupled to amazing zip-lines, a butterfly house, miles of hiking trails with many many swinging bridges this place is terrific. Stay at the hotel too!

I think this place was awesome. You could do a hike to a view point to see the lake and volcano. You can visit the butterfly conservatory, you can see monkeys!, and of course you can zipline. It was my first time zip lining and it was so fun. A little of a challenge as you have to stop the zipline with your hand! but you get use to it. Guess thats why its extreme! I thought it was very cool and if your planning to do ziplining in Costa Rica this is probably cheaper. Fun day. Great for families, solo, or with friends.

The Nature Reserve was beautiful, looking over the lake and surrounded by volcanoes. The Extreme Zip-lining was absolutely brilliant, such an adrenaline rush!! I just wanted to do it again and again. We saw monkeys too and visited the butterfly farm.
