Owner description: The Atitlan Nature Reserve is both a must for visitors of Lake Atitlan and a force in the environmental cause: Atitlan Azul. It is an extraordinary gate to the magnificent Lake Atitlan and its spectacular volcanoes. Its zip lines, butterfly preserve, trails, hanging bridges and lodgings bring you in close contact with nature. On the zip lines you fly above waterfalls, coffee groves, oak stands and the steep cliffs that guard the lake. At the Butterfly Geodome you enjoy the colors and forms of hundreds of butterflies surrounded by flowers and the sounds of water. Humming birds and the murmur of the river accompany you while you have lunch, coffee or a drink, then you continue to explore the diversity and beauty of this natural wonder. At night, the crickets, owls and the sounds of the night will be your company in our lodging. The Reserve supports the work of scientist and students concerned with biodiversity and environmental degradation.

We did the ultra zipline. The views are incredible and the lines are the best I've experienced. Definitely would recommend trying.

I walked the nature trail with a small group. It was a pleasant walk but not particularly outstanding. Based on online reading, we bought bananas to coax out the monkeys but I recommend against that. The bananas certainly attracted a coati who was too aggressive for my liking but did not coax the monkeys to come closer although we saw one in the trees.

There were a number of swinging bridges which appeared sturdy and in good condition but I just get a little nervous on swinging bridges. There were waterfalls and tropical plants such as a huge aloe plant. We did not see any zipline activity and the zipline landing we saw appeared overgrown. Perhaps the ziplines weren’t all open yet because we visited in mid November, right after the rainy season. I knew we were not likely to see many butterflies in the butterfly garden because we visited in the afternoon but went to the garden anyway and saw some nice plants such as orchids.

We walked to the preserve from Hotel Atitlan where we were staying and that hotel had much more impressive plants.

I visited this place with a group of people in September 2011, some of the guys did the zipline and had fun. They have trails, along with beautiful waterfalls, monkeys, badgers, swing bridges. It was fun and def. a place to go if you're in the area.

A nice walk on a steep track though the bush will give you views of spider monkeys that perform by swinging from their tail. Also saw a coati and had fun on the swing bridges - -are they really safe?
