Owner description: The Atitlan Nature Reserve is both a must for visitors of Lake Atitlan and a force in the environmental cause: Atitlan Azul. It is an extraordinary gate to the magnificent Lake Atitlan and its spectacular volcanoes. Its zip lines, butterfly preserve, trails, hanging bridges and lodgings bring you in close contact with nature. On the zip lines you fly above waterfalls, coffee groves, oak stands and the steep cliffs that guard the lake. At the Butterfly Geodome you enjoy the colors and forms of hundreds of butterflies surrounded by flowers and the sounds of water. Humming birds and the murmur of the river accompany you while you have lunch, coffee or a drink, then you continue to explore the diversity and beauty of this natural wonder. At night, the crickets, owls and the sounds of the night will be your company in our lodging. The Reserve supports the work of scientist and students concerned with biodiversity and environmental degradation.

Again this year I enjoyed the jungly setting, sky bridges, waterfalls, and spider monkeys. This year there were lots of butterflies in the butterfly enclosure, an added bonus.

I caught a tuk-tuk up to the reserve but was able to walk back to Panajachel in about 20 minutes without any difficulty, although you do have to walk on the road and be mindful of chicken buses roaring around the corner.
The visitor centre looks quite smart, with informative displays and clean bathrooms.
I set out for the monkey viewing platform and was lucky enough to see both spider monkeys and a family of coatimundis. Once I read that these animals were all former pets though it felt a little contrived. I had assumed these would be wild, native animals but they are not.
I started walking the long trail but the trail isnt very well maintained and there were bugs and enormous spider webs everywhere. Being a bit nervous around spiders I turned back and took the shorter hike to the "playa" instead. There really isn't a beach, I don't know how you would get out of the water if you decided to go swimming and its quite a sharp drop off, obviously eroded over time, and there is a lot of wooden debris in the water. The grass was full of bugs and I left with bites everywhere. I hadnt put on DEET as I wanted to go into the butterfly enclosure and didnt know if it would have an ill-effect on the butterflies. I shouldnt have worried since I only saw two or three butterlies anyway. And again, more huge spider webs in the butterfly enclosure which I would have thought they'd clear to preserve the butterfly population.
In short, if you don't like humidity, spiders, bugs bites and lots of really wobbly suspension bridges, you might want to steer clear of the nature reserve. If you don't care about that and want to see some nice green rainforest foliage and former pet monkeys, then pay the 55 quetzales and head on in!

Be prepared to pay for many of the more exciting activities offer by the reserve such as canopy, team building, and some other ones. If you simply want to hike the nature trail, then it is less expensive.

The nature trail was a hike through the jungle there and some hanging bridges that crossed cascades, springs and trees. There were various overlooks that let you see part of the lake. Some of the last legs of the trail needed to have some maintenance, we thought. If you are lucky you get to see some spider monkeys in their natural habitat.

There is also a butterfly compound where you can see different types of butterflies. You can also hike to the lake shore. I do not recommend this hike, the trails are not maintained at all and there is basically no shore, since the lake has outgrown the beach that once was. Not worth the 30 minute hike.

If this is your first time in Lake Atitlan, I would recommend visiting. If you like Canopy, I would recommend you doing it. It looked like a lot of fun, we didn't do it, but probably will next time.

Really awesome place. Make sure you go when they are feeding the monkees. Awesome trails, fun 1/2 day excursion. Ziplines require lots of climbing!

We enjoyed the butterfly experience and both trails had interesting views and the zip lines looked like fun. This attraction was within walking distance of our hotel, Hotel Atitlan.
