Owner description: The Atitlan Nature Reserve is both a must for visitors of Lake Atitlan and a force in the environmental cause: Atitlan Azul. It is an extraordinary gate to the magnificent Lake Atitlan and its spectacular volcanoes. Its zip lines, butterfly preserve, trails, hanging bridges and lodgings bring you in close contact with nature. On the zip lines you fly above waterfalls, coffee groves, oak stands and the steep cliffs that guard the lake. At the Butterfly Geodome you enjoy the colors and forms of hundreds of butterflies surrounded by flowers and the sounds of water. Humming birds and the murmur of the river accompany you while you have lunch, coffee or a drink, then you continue to explore the diversity and beauty of this natural wonder. At night, the crickets, owls and the sounds of the night will be your company in our lodging. The Reserve supports the work of scientist and students concerned with biodiversity and environmental degradation.

“Could be Better”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 9, 2012

This was a nice little getaway from town, but for the entrance fee and tuk-tuk ride it was an okay place. We did see two monkeys in the trees from one of the look-outs and a few butterflies in the farm but it was pretty limited. It also a have a caged racoon in a cardboard box. There were some fun suspended bridges and a waterfall and a hiking trail. The trail could have been better maintained. We were constantly ducking from the overgrown brush and decided against hiking the whole trail. There was also a trail to a beach which we did not take. But if the it was a nice beach it might be worth it. This place has potential.

Worth the $35, but not the most thrilling zipline I've done in Central America. Still, do it for the view you get of the Lake!

“Beautiful place!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 9, 2012

I had a nice 2 hour hike through this reserve. There is more to do there----zip line, longer hike----but I just did a short walk.

I saw butterflies (go early in the day), monkeys, coatimundi. If you bring a few bananas----I did not but other travelers did----you are sure to see the monkeys and coatimundi who seem to watch the viewing platform closely! Nice visitor center with banos. You do need sturdy shoes and it gets humid in the 'jungle' so dress lightly.

I started out walking up to the reserve but chickened out because of the heavily trafficked road. It is not far but it is. . .trafficky. Other travelers were braver! But I went back and got a tuk tuk. He dropped me off and I asked him to return in 2 hours. He was there promptly. If you have kids, this might be your best bet.

Great place. Definitely put this on your Pana list.

“Zip Line Heaven--and Jungle Paradise Besides”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 7, 2012

We visited here specifically to do the zip lining--but were also amazed by the physical beauty of the place. We checked, got our wrist bands--and headed in to get fitted for our zip line harnesses and safety equipment (gloves/helmet). After we were fitted, we began the 25-30 minute walk UP to the first zip line station. We are in our mid-60's and this was quite a hike. Not for those who are out of shape. Along the hike we saw several monkeys, a coati, lots of butterflies...and some awesome waterfalls. The hike included crossing several suspension bridges with good views of the jungle and the hillside down to the lake. Fortunately, stopping to admire the views gave us a good excuse to rest a bit on the way up. We finally reached the platform for the first zip line run. Some in our group had never been before and were apprehensive. The zip line operator offered "tandem" zipping--for those with a little apprehension--where an instructor would go on each zip run in tandem with the person who wanted a little security. Great way for those with a little fear to still get to do the runs. We had been zip lining twice before this, so considered ourselves "experienced". The longer of the 8 runs were almost 1000 feet long...very long for a zip line run. AND...the views while zipping on two of the longest runs were astounding looking out over the jungle--with a panoramic view of Lake Attitlan and the volcanoes in the background. Simply one of the best experiences we have had. HIghly recommended for the adventurous spirit.
