Owner description: The heart of Cayala City, 63 acres of land that combine housing, dining, shopping, entertainment and business districts. With over 90 commercial concepts from coffes, shops and restaurants, a special place to share with a cultural agenda and activities all year round.

This place reminds one of those cities the Japanese build copying other cities and life styles such as the Swiss Alps, American West Towns, English Towns, etc is a bizarre feeling since the cities are false and so the life style imposed in them. Cayala is a self imposed guetto where all in there are expected to behave in an unnatural manner to "fit" in.. very sad but Guatemala in general is a place where foreign cultures have priority over it's prime traditions and culture, and alien developers are making a fortune as a consequence of the country's weak structure and self believe.

Some friends took me to Paseo Cayala on a Saturday evening during my stay in Guatemala City in February. It is an upscale Americanized shopping center. It is an open air mall and it has a very relaxed atmosphere. It has a lot of global brand stores. It has a carousel which my friend's little girl rode a couple of times. We were going to find a place to get dessert and settled on Tutto Gelato which was very good.

The parking lot for Paseo Cayala is underground and is computerized. A board at the entry tells you how many slots are available in each section. As you look down each row of parking each slot had either a red or green light above the slot to indicate if parking is available. The green light is to show that the slot is open. It is a neat parking system.

Very upscale shopping and dining or just an evening of relaxation. Our friend and her little girl rode the beautiful carousel twice. Had to tear her away from it. Then we gandered about looking for one of the coffee houses and saw the gelato. Anyone knows me know I went for the goodies. We ate Tutto gelato . Selected from over 20 beautiful flavors. It was all good. We relaxed in one of the few chairs available. We arrived late so we did not have enough time. Great place to visit.

First, you must know this is not a place to see the "authentic" Guatemala, but it is also a good place to see other faces of reality and not the classic stereotypes of the city or country. If you are in Guatemala City for a few days you should stop by to spend some hours in the afternoon or at night in here. It's a beautiful mediterranean-European sort of style place with very good restaurants and some fancy stores. Many families come here during the day and at night you can still find many restaurants and bars open until late. Plus it is much safer than going at night to other places in the city.

If you're looking for a backpacker style place to eat, this is not the place to go. For that you can find other options around the city :)

The prices of food vary from as cheap as $4.00 or $6.00 to $30 or $40 in some restaurants and all the prices in between just depends on where you eat. If you are in Guatemala City for business or tourism and you want a GOOD restaurant to eat or place to spend the afternoon you can for sure go here.

I usually host friends or people from other places at my house (I have had people from US, Uruguay, Panama, Nepal, Argentina, Germany, Italy, Spain, Honduras and more) and just one of them didn't like the place.

If you want to go to an open air mall as if you were in the US, then this is the place for you. Everything is overpriced and screams American style development, complete with local and international chain shops and restaurants. Don't get me wrong, it's beautiful and brand new. Just not exactly the genuine Guatemalan experience.
