Got out of our taxi on the main square last week, to kill some time before catching an overnight bus to Flores/Tikal. Were instantly in the middle of a gun battle! Therefore, as the square and Cathedral are only marginally interesting, (check out the square in Antigua, or Cusco, Peru, or Bogota but skip this one!) I would avoid Guatemala City entirely. We were in the city for 4 hours and had three (yes, three) "exciting" moments. Fly to Flores.

We enjoyed a stop inside the cathedral to see its architectural details and discreetly observe parishoners. We also appreciated seeing the pillars outside the cathedral that list names of people who were killed or disappeared during Guatemala’s civil war are a sobering sight. This historical church is well worth a stop if you’re looking for the highlights of Guatemala City.

How can you go wrong? You're in parqe central, it's right there, it's free... just go inside and check it out. It's not the most beautiful cathedral I've ever seen but it's definitely worth seeing.

Nice place, plenty of people visiting. Located in the center of the city near park, market etc. Lots of families visiting.
