Owner description: The National Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology is a public institution and is part of the Directorate General of Cultural and Natural Heritage. Protects and disseminates the most important collection of archaeological artifacts of Mayan Culture, as well as a collection of ethnological material showing the cultural diversity of Guatemalan society. The permanent exhibition occupies 3500 square meters including pieces of jades, pottery, textiles and masks. Two rooms for temporary exhibitions present general topics of Mayan Culture and Guatemalan Archeology.

While I enjoyed the museum, I don't think it was worth the money. When we visited there were a lot of empty rooms - we figured it was because of 13 B'aktun and assumed that a lot of the exhibits were on loan.

There is very little information on the exhibits unless you hire a guide or know Spanish (which I imagine many readers do). I have half-decent Spanish and still thought the information in the exhibits was sparse.

The best thing about this museum in my opinion is that the modern art museum, zoo, and market are all really close together, so you can make a day of all of them. Be prepared to drop some dough, though.

The artifacts are incredible but compared to the Popul Vu this museum was lacking. Also the modern exhibit of women mixed with the artifacts did not blend well and was hard to navigate our children through the museum.

I have visit the museum like 100 times and every time I go there is amazing, you can learn about mayan culture from de begining to the end of the mayan era.

The museum has good, well displayed artifacts of the ancient Maya and great examples of traditional dress from various regions of Guatemala. We stopped here before touring several Maya archaeology sites. It gave a good overview of what we would be seeing.

Lots of artifacts. I especially enjoyed the native clothing exhibit.
