No Spanish needed at the Westin

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Aug 24, 2007
My husband and I stayed at the Westin Camino Real while on a visit trip to see our son that we are adopting. The hotel lobby is quite pretty and the entire staff is welcoming and helpful. Most of the staff is fluent in English, so we didn't have to speak much Spanish. The room was a good size and the bed couldn't have been more comfy. They also supplied a baby bathtub that we could use for our son. There was also a family lounge down the hall from the room which was also a nice touch. The pool was beautiful and clean. The only downside of the hotel was the limited food selection. There was only one restaurant and since we didn't venture out much, we ate a lot of the same food.

The hotel itself is beautiful (not much to look at from the outside). The lobby, restaurants, pool area, and rooms were all very nice and very clean. The gym was one of the nicest and biggest I've ever seen in a hotel. The bathroom was very small....beds are the BEST. Love their heavenly bed. We slept like babies. Aside from the pool staff (very helpful and very professional) the rest of the hotel staff was horrible. From the front desk to room service to upper management.....they were all terrible. Room service food was cold and completely undercooked.

A top class hotel located right in the middle of Zone 10, the main tourist and business district. The rooms are a bit small but exceptionally well appointed. Service is top flight as you would expect from a Westin and the hotel restaurant is very good and reasonably priced.

Its just not inexpensive.

My wife and I traveled to Guatemala last week to pick up our child who we were adopting. We stayed several nights at the Westin Camino Real. It was not our first trip to Guatemala and we have stayed in many hotels. We highly recommend the Westin Camino Real for either business travel or adoption travel.

It is located in Zone 10 (Zona 10 aka Zona Viva) which is one of the,
relatively, safer zones. It is several blocks away from the US Embassy and is surrounded by several major banks and businesses.

The staff could not be warmer or more helpful – from the business center to the front desk to the bellmen to the restaurant staff. All
speak English and many are quite fluent.

The beds are truly heavenly. The deluxe rooms are the standard hotel room size and are not huge. That said, they are roomy enough. There is an Executive level where children aren’t permitted that is more luxurious with many more perks.

The food at El Cafetal (the main hotel restaurant) was excellent. There is also a Viennese style café (Café Viennes) and an Italian restaurant on premises as well (Restaurant Giuseppi Verdi). Since we had a baby with us, we stuck to El Cafetal. They were very accommodating for the couples with small children and infants. The Biltmore Bar there is also a great place to relax (for grownups) as is the piano bar.

A few tips for those staying there (and Guatemala in general):
1.The breakfast buffet at El Cafetal will satisfy any longing for a big American breakfast. It also has Guatemalan items too so you can sample the local flavor (like refried black beans and fried plantains
– both yummy for breakfast).
2.The lunch buffet is excellent but very pricey for what you get.
3.The dinner buffets are great and better priced.
4.The menu items are also great, especially the pasta, the traditional Guatemalan lunch/dinner and the tenderloin.
5.DO use the pool or sit at the cabana area. They serve a reduced menu there so you can get a decent lunch in the outdoors. (One day we were out at the cabana area around 5pm-5:30pm local time and heard a cacophony of car horns – some angry some not – just shows there are some universal emotions when stuck in traffic).
6.DON’T walk the neighborhood with your baby if you are adopting.
7.DO choose any routes you plan to take outside the hotel very carefully. It’s better to get a cab if you have to do more than cross the street to El Portal (a shop across from the entrance to the hotel).
8.DO use great care when crossing any street. Pedestrians do not have
the right of way.
9.DON’T try to drive yourself. Get a cab.
10.DO shop at Zunil Shop and Village Books on the first level of the hotel. You can purchase nice gifts and bottled water as well as phone cards (ask for Ladatel cards).

The Westin is well worth a night either before or after your exploring the country of Guatemala. The hotel is impeccable. Absolutely gorgeous and well maintained. They offer free shuttle to the airport starting at a very early hour in the morning. Food good and the central location of the hotel offers great proximity to restaurants from McDonald's to a great beef restaurant directly down the street from the front of the hotel. There is also a nice mall with an internet cafe near by. Lots of security prevails and we felt very safe in that area.

I have stayed here twice, and both times found the hotel to be extremely well run, and really a 5 star property. It is half the price of similar places in the US and Canada, and I must think it is a lot harder to achieve 5 star quality in Guatemala. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful, service is prompt, beds are EXTREMELY comfortable. The pool facility is really good, the exercise rooms are really well equipped and large. There are a ton of channels on the TV (not the usual small number on the typical hotel TV services). The location is in the safest part of the city. Room service, laundry service and the main restaurant are all excellent.

Guatemala can be a challening country to visit, and this place is like a refuge.
