“Great place to stay and there's Vegemite!”
Reviewed July 14, 2014

I chose this hotel due to it saying there is Vegemite to be found in Guatemala! Having lived in Oz before the name literally sprung to me and the added bonus of Guate City being our last stop also helped with the shuttle bus to the airport where the flight was leaving as the sun came up.

We had arrived from the Tikal very early morning but were given a room at 6am as the bus driver saw we were tired from that journey...it was the best sleep ever!

The hostel had helpful staff who mapped out places to see in the city and explained how the transport worked and the free breakfast was good and where I got my fix of Vegemite on toast. The rooms were big and clean as were the bathrooms.

The hostel was close to the nightlife part of the city and in which I suggest you get a cab back if you are staying out late.

Wanting to go back to Guatemala again, I would definitely stop off here again.

Quetzalroo is a clean hostel in a safe location in Guatemala City. We stayed for two nights in the off peak season, the hostel was not full so the layout of the rooms was not a problem for us. We had similar experiences to previous reviewers and found some members of staff patronising and rude during our stay.

Note: There are not only three rules in this hostel as advised on the posters

I was planning to stay in a luxury hotel as i had heard Guatemala City was dangerous. After meeting someone that had just stayed here I changed my plans and am very glad i did.
The family run hostel is super friendly and make you feel at home as soon as you arrive. Marcos runs free group tours of bars, restaurants and day trips and clearly takes pride in showing travellers the funky, hip fun parts of his city.
An amazing way to see a city that has such a bad stigma to it. I would definitely stay here again when i travel back through.

I stayed at the hostel for two nights as a first stop I Guatemala. I travelled alone and hoped to meet people at the hostel to do explore the city with - and I did. The atmosphere at the hostel is very relaxed and different activities are offered. The first evening a optional dinner was arranged at a local restaurant. The day after I joined a biking tour in the City (120 Q) - do that if you have the chance. For 4-5 hours we visited galleries, saw architecture, churches, bar etc. and had great street food. The staff was very nice and proposed tours and other activities in other parts of Guatemala. If you are looking for a quiet hotel room, go to a hotel. If you want to meet people and have some great days go to Quetzalroo.

As this is a longer review, the 'too long didn't read' summary is this: stay here if you must but try somewhere else if you can. There are better options around if you just need a night near the airport (eg dos lobos). If you do stay here, prepare to have your patience tested.

The good thing about this hostel is that it's conveniently located in zone ten where many of the city's best restaurants can be found. Indeed, just a few blocks walk away is tamarindos, a classy Asian Italian joint that's well worth a visit. Also, while simple, the complementary breakfast of coffee fruit bread and homemade jam is a nice touch.

However, the hostel is very poorly laid out. Staying in a private room requires walking through and sharing a bathroom with the dorms. As the walls are paper thin and the privates straddle the shared bathroom, no one gets much in the way of peace or privacy, and all guests can expect to hear people coming and going (i.e. bedroom and bathroom noises) all day and night.

To add to this, the hostel is very well hidden, and even with an address at hand your cab driver will almost certainly struggle to find the place. This isn't helped by the fact that the only sign indicating there is a hostel hiding behind the cluster of hospitals and laboratories has the business name in tiny font scribbled in the bottom corner of the poster, while the majority of the sign is taken up by juvenile water color drawings of kangaroos.

Which brings me to my final complaint, the owners son who runs the reception is not meant for the service industry. After traveling for hours on end to this place, expect to stand in the rain helplessly talking into an intercom that is not loud enough to be heard over the roar of cars racing past. You will be treated with extreme disdain for not being able to guess how to get to the hostel entrance. This guy will have an attitude with you for the rest of your stay because you were incapable of hearing him whisper instructions over the intercom of how to enter. When you come back the next night and skillfully navigate to the second intercom, expect to be met wth the same attitude for not bein able to scale the wall so as not to interrupt whatever work he is not doing in the reception.

Overall, the owner and her son seem like perfectly personable people who simply have no interest in providing customer service related to the hostel and would rather chat you up about random topics of conversation or, in the son's case, try to sell you tours of the city where he promises you the best of everything. You will feel like you are putting them out for asking for your room key, or trying to pay, or requesting the complementary breakfast you were promised. Very awkward experience all around and, paired with the horrible room lay out and difficulty finding and entering the establishment, one worth trying to avoid.

Great hostal! Had a really nice stay in this very familiar and friendly hostel. Wanted to stay just one night but ended staying 4.
The managers are very nice and keen to show you guatemala city (above all the non-touristy and cultural sides of Guate): for instance I made a bike tour with them to the aMazing mercado la Terminal!
They also have good advices about what to visit or how to get around!
And last but not least:
Great place to stay if you're on transit! (free shuttle service to airport or bus terminals)

This hostel is a wonderful, safe way to spend the night in Guatemala city. Make sure to do the walking city tour & enjoy a beer on the roof top! Night tours to local dancing hot spots was also fun & safe!
