Lovely atmosphere

3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Feb 26, 2017via mobile
Old, historic hotel. Friendly staff, individual service including starting your fire at night. Food seemed overpriced and small portions. Supper wasn't served until 7. Rather noisy from street noise, dogs barking. A real challenge to get to in a vehicle on market day.

Best hotel of six we've stayed at in Guatemala so far. Established in 1932, it has many museum-quality paintings and artifacts: the furniture is amazing. Rooms are spacious and comfortable--you're not giving up much for old world comfort. Fireplaces in every room with real wood--so delightful. The restaurant is great (we had dinner and breakfast here.). Terrific location--a block from the market and several from the cemetery. Staff really cares for you; introduce themselves by name (e.g. Tomas was our waiter and responsible for our room). Can't ask for more!

We had high hopes for the Mayan Inn as we had read all about it. The staff were very helpful and they assign someone to you personally to look after you and be your waiter. All the rooms have fireplaces as it is cold, but there is an overpowering smell of wood smoke everywhere, especially in the bedrooms and being asthmatic this really made me wheeze a lot. The beds are small and hard. The blankets are rough and scratchy. You have to run the water for 4 minutes before it arrives hot as the boilers are the old originals from the 1930s. It was all in all a bit of an odd place. The bar was very cold as the fire hadn't been lit and the Christmas Eve buffet was bizarre and even the waiters didn't seem to know what to do.......but I suppose the whole experience WAS different!

This hotel is one of few places to stay - it's very close to the market.....Pros -- getting up in morning and stepping out into the street, blaze of colors, shamans on steps of church nearby. Glorious experience. The hotel is from 1926 and still has the same feel - felt like a traveller from the past....each room has personal servant - he will come and light fire when you ring bell. It's cold - no heating, lots of blankets. Liked it very much if you take it for what it is. Plumbing is not good but not their fault - they're in a tiny mountain town. Lovely people working there....

Awesome rustic hotel less than a minute walk to the main market. Our family loved it here, and I highly recommend it to other travelers.

That said, there are two parrots who are kept as pets in the courtyard, and they may be Guatemala's most prolific (and loudest) squawking demons. Thankfully they are put away at night, but do not plan on taking any afternoons naps. Ever.

Dear Duncan W,

Thank you for your comment. I am glad that you loved your stay with us. On the other hand, I am sorry about the parrots, next time you come we can certainly give a room far away from the parrots so you can take your nap. Thank you again for staying with us!!

Stayed here for one night after visiting the market. It was a nice reprieve from the hustle and bustle of the market. Room was nice with a wood burning fireplace,it was clean and very comfortable. It was next to market so very convenient to come back and drop of our goods and then go back out. Food was good.
