We had high hopes for the Mayan Inn as we had read all about it. The staff were very helpful and they assign someone to you personally to look after you and be your waiter. All the rooms have fireplaces as it is cold, but there is an overpowering smell of wood smoke everywhere, especially in the bedrooms and being asthmatic this really made me wheeze a lot. The beds are small and hard. The blankets are rough and scratchy. You have to run the water for 4 minutes before it arrives hot as the boilers are the old originals from the 1930s. It was all in all a bit of an odd place. The bar was very cold as the fire hadn't been lit and the Christmas Eve buffet was bizarre and even the waiters didn't seem to know what to do.......but I suppose the whole experience WAS different!
