“Great hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 6, 2013

I thought this place was great. Placencia for us was a bit boring but the hotel was quite nice. We originally were booked at Turtle Inn but arrived and departed within 30 minutes. Chablis Mar had excellent bang for the buck. We stayed 5 nights in April.

Pros:
- kitchen space
- laundry!
- great a/c
- comfy bed
- sufficient bathroom space
- living room area
- waterfront
- balcony with hammock
- decent food
- room service
- friendly helpful people
- you can rent gold carts on site
- you can book tours on site
- driver to town- he picked us up when we called- amazing

Cons
- more apt feeling vs beachy vacation-y type
- the ocean in belizze is sea grass filled so the ocean is just not as nice

We didnt try the bar and didnt really do much- just relaxed. Eat at Rumfish and Vino. SUper excellent drinks.

We stayed for about 7 days in Placencia at ChabilMar with our two teen boys. It was a wonderful holiday with topnotch service. The condo was beautifully decorated and very comfortable. The dinner service (to the room) and the one at the pier was elegant. Food at ChabilMar is probably the best in the city. Although, there are some great restaurants in the town. All in all, a great holiday and we will do it again.

We were in Belize for 2 weeks and spend the last half of our vacation at Chabil Mar. I wish we had spent all of our time in Chabil Mar!!!

Excellent and personal service.. You can beat the view, dive shop right opposite, so very very conveniently located. Whenever we needed to get to town, Laacho (van driver) was always there with a smile..

The gelato place in town is a must try!! We enjoyed the lobster fest too when we were there!!!

My husband, myself and our adult daughter spent five days at Chabil Mar in December. The staff was extremely friendly and accommodating. The food and accommodations were excellent. The Monkey River Tour was great fun. On the negative side: the beach is not user friendly; the resort does not have an on-site restaurant. We asked the staff to arrange for an all day (deep sea) fishing trip. The boat was very small and not at all what we expected. We did not catch any fish. The staff also arranged a horseback riding trip for us. We drove for over an hour and then rode around in an orchard - would certainly not recommend (not very scenic and quite boring)

Full disclosure: We are Americans living part-time on Ambergris Caye, Belize and greatly enjoy staying at 4-5 star resorts and hotels throughout the US, Mexico and Belize. Therefore, we know Belize and know what to expect at a 4-5 star resort. We also work in the hospitality industry - owning a luxury vacation rental on Ambergris Caye.

The resort was pretty and well kept. The staff was sweet and accommodating. The food was okay. I did love the Chocolate soufflé and fresh fruit in the morning was great. The rooms were clean and perfectly appointed - a safe, iron, extra blankets, a dresser for clothes. Décor was very typical of Belize. A bit dated but clean and straight. The AC was strong and the kitchen was fully equipped (and updated). The bed linens were GREAT and so were the pillows but the mattress was springy. There were special touches that we appreciated - a note upon arrival, flowers, and chocolate.

If you are used to a 4-5 star resort in the US - this resort is more like a 3-star. Unfortunately it is priced as a 4-5 star! For 100-150USD it would have been AWESOME but for 300+ nightly it was a bit pricey.

Placencia village was teeny and not much going on. We were happy with the resort however we expected the water to be blue like Ambergris and the village to be a bit more happening. A lot of restaurants were closed (late August). At the very least we were looking to relax and stare at the sea. The BEACH is really nice - sandy. However, the water isn't crystal blue ;(

We did the Monkey River tour and it was, if anything, a nice boatride and interesting. Its through a pretty murky river and the jungle 'hike,' is short and we got to see howler monkeys. Make sure you wear old sneakers they might get dirty.

I DID get a manicure and pedicure by Bernadette and it was GREAT!!

If you are thinking of visiting Placencia - I would go with a group for 1-2 nights MAX and stay at this hotel with another couple or 2 therefore you share the cost. We paid 300+ for a unit that had 2bedrooms and 2baths and could sleep more in a loft! Like anything, you make the most of it, hang out with friends, peruse the village, get your drink on.

Hit Cayo (Western Belize) for a few days trip but Ambergris is a week or more. Water is amazing and a bit more to do and more of a town to explore.

We do thank the staff for their courtesy and kindness. A little weekend getaway and relaxation was what we were looking for and it was satisfactory.

Room Tip: I don't know about the other rooms but ours had an additional bedroom and bath and a loft so I...

Nothing bad to say, sand on beach was not the best but they don't control that. Would come back twice a year if I could afford it. Best choice for a honeymoon, glad we did it rather than the typical destinations.

Staff are wonderful, even arranged flight from airport to hotel for us. Rooms were cleaned daily, always kept grounds clean and bug free for the most part and did it naturally.

Room Tip: They are all great and cleaned perfectly daily.

What an exceptional resort!! If you're looking to stay in Belize or simply looking to spend your vacation relaxing and/or exploring, look no further! We will definitely revisit Chabil Mar but will bring our kids next time, as this is the perfect place to go as a family as well as a couple.
Our flight into Placencia had been canceled, due to engine problems with our connecting flight in Dallas so we ended up taking a taxi from Belize City to Placencia rather than the pedal-jumper flight. We had been told it was a rough car trip to travel to Placencia and that it was about a 4 hour trip, but it was an experience I'm so happy to have gone away with. Our taxi driver (who mostly spoke Spanish) was very informative (my husband speaks fluent Spanish) and knew the roads extremely well, getting us to the resort in 3 hours. We had spoken with Althea by phone and she had an outstanding meal waiting for us in our villa once we arrived, as we were starving! Seriously, the food at Chabil Mar is so delicious we didn't feel the need to eat anywhere else. As mentioned in previous reviews, there is no actual restaurant on site but they will bring your meal to you wherever you would like it! The staff was so warm, helpful, friendly, and informative. On our trip, in particular, we were extremely impressed by Althea, Tiffany, Merli, Junior, and DeShawn.
The pools were wonderful- warm, clean infinity pools (one being right outside our villa door- very convenient). Our villa was so nice and homey and the beds were beyond comfortable. The dryer in our villa wasn't working properly but my husband fixed it and we were good to go!
We rented a golf cart for 24 hours and took a couple trips to the village of Placencia. We did have some of the notorious Tutti Frutti gelato, which I highly recommend. The town was very safe and the people were warm. We went to the grocery store and stocked the kitchen in our villa, which was recommended in other reviews.
We also took 2 of the tours. Rather than exploring the Mayan ruins just 1 1/2 hours away, we were told that the Xunantunich Mayan ruins, near the border of Guatemala (a 3 hour drive, on the Hummingbird Highway again), were far superior so we did that. It was magnificent!!! Absolutely an incredible experience! Juan, our driver, was so knowledgeable and was a fantastic tour guide. We spent quite awhile there, walking through the jungle area just on the perimeter, seeing howler monkeys and learning about trees, plants, etc... And of course, we hiked to the very top of the Xunantunich Castillo- WOW!!! I'm so happy to have come away with that experience...irreplaceable. After the tour, Juan took us to lunch at Benny's Kitchen in the village there and the food was outstanding. I had the pibil and it was SO good- so were the empanadas. Delicious. On our way back to the resort, we stopped at the Blue Hole for a swim and felt the day was perfect!
We also did the Monkey River tour- another irreplaceable, remarkable experience. Jason was our guide and he was awesome! He had more Creole influence so it was fascinating hearing his stories. The boat ride was about 45 minutes to the village where we ordered our lunch and got back in the boat for the actual tour. WOW. We stopped along an embankment after several minutes and hiked through the jungle!! Jason had a machete and walking through the jungle with him was an education! He had those howler monkeys going crazy! We also saw a large crab, drank water out of a tree trunk, ate a coconut-like substance out of a tree's fruit, and learned a LOT! We were sponges that day. We did have a whole can of bug spray with us and we went through the entire can! Next time, I'll bring more than just one can. I had so many dead bugs and mosquitos on my legs by the time we were done! The rest of the ride on the boat brought us down the river to see iguana, bats, 8 crocodile, turtles, manatee, fish, etc... We ate at Alice's Kitchen in the Monkey River village on our way back and saw the manatee en route back to the resort.
I could go on and on about this place...it was AWESOME!!!
We did get to take the pedal-jumper plane back to Belize City and what a fun and interesting experience that was!! I was highly confused when we flew in for a landing only 10 minutes after we'd taken off. Was there a problem?! Nope. Just had some other passengers to pick up!! And we made another stop after that to pick up a few more!!! So great! Loved this trip. We'll be back!

Room Tip: We stayed in villa #4 and it was perfect!!
