“You better Belize it!”
Reviewed December 14, 2012

Angie and the Placencia Hotel staff went above and beyond to make our trip to Belize special. Our accomodations were excellent and the food was wonderful. We sampled most of the menu and each dish was delicious. The menu was limited but had something for everyone. The beach was lovely, although you couldn't swim in the water due to jellyfish. The pool made up for that. The resort is about 11 miles from the town of Placencia, which suited us fine. We enjoyed the starry nights and the peace and quiet. A taxi into town was $25 U.S. each way, but we saved money by using the hotel shuttle service where possible, taking the bus on one occasion, and by sharing the cab fare with fellow vacationers. I'd like to thank the management and staff of the Placencia Hotel for making our vacation special. This is a quiet resort, not for everyone, but a wonderful experience for those who long for relaxation. Note: bring DEET insect repellant. When you're this close to nature/the jungle, there are insects which bite.

If you can afford resort prices for EVERYTHING, then you will love this place. It was a beautiful resort, with a great pool and good drinks. But...you're kind of trapped there. We rented a car, which allowed us to get to the Village, and we found it to be more enjoyable there. The prices at the Hotel were 2 - 3x more than the Village (for food, drinks, WiFi, massages). And I honestly didn't think that the food was very good. We paid $100 (USD) for a buffet for 2, consisting of jerk chicken. Seriously? Lesson learned - ask the price before you hop in.
Also, the resort is big, and it was pretty empty when we were there, but they kept the 3 restuarants open. It was akward to eat b/c the rooms were big, but barely filled. And they had entertainment on the pier, but it wasn't advertised, so no one was every out watching. It was just lonely.
Again, if you want the pricey resort, this is good for you. But if you want anything else, I recommend looking for something closer to, or in, the Placencia Village at the south end of the penninsula.

Let me first say that I read the reviesws on here before booking as my sister and I purchased a groupon for the resort. Based on some of the good reviews AND the response of management (stating they are learning from these reviews), we took a chance. The management has not learned from these reviews and has yet to make changes. Like many of the reviews on here, the first hour was the best part of the trip. Warmly welcomed by the staff... However, getting the shuttle to pick us up from the airport was quite a task and took over an hour before we finally just took a cab. The shuttle met us halfway and the driver was very apologetic and friendly. Again, the staff was very nice and we could tell that they wanted to help- it seemed like an overarching strange vibe from the management down. Get ready to pay for everything extra. Wi-fi was $50 a week and you have to pay a fee to use the gym and tennis courts. The food was outragously expensive and NOT at all appetizing. We actually stopped eating there and made our way down the street to the maya bistro, mangos and of course, places in the village. This place is WAY out of the way and they make it sound like shuttles are available as needed. They have like 4 of them just sitting and only go to town 2-3 times a day. Not very helpful but we eventually got the local bus schedule out of them. I wish we would have known so we could have rented a car. We came to Belize to dive and attempted to go through the front desk to book, however they were very unresponsive and always said "we will let you know if we get enough people". Two days later, we would ask about the diving or tours and they would say they did not have enough people. Any other place would have said " no, we don't have enough to make the tour, but here's the name of a few places you can go through" OR in the normal service industry, they would arrange it for you. Not this place, when we would go to the front desk, obviously needing assistance, it was like it was a bother to help us. Again, I dont think it was the staff, I think it is management. I feel like they tell their staff to refrain from helping guests if it means less revenue for the hotel. The rooms are really nice- kitchen and bathrooms are great but the kitchens have no utensils or pots or pans. It's like they want you to believe there is a full kitchen to fix snacks and meals as you'd like, but there are no tools to do so.
The beach was HORRIBLE!! Sludge from digging out the marina left the beach empty. For the money, even the groupon amount, it was not worth the stay or the frustration. Run away friends.

Room Tip: Choose a room at another resort if you're looking for service.

I visited the resort in September. The new manager Angie and her staff were great! My suite was right on the beach and the pool is amazing. Overall, my friends and I loved it! I would definitely go back again and again.

We stumbled on The Placencia because of a Groupon special. Otherwise, I doubt we would have stayed there, as the reviews were inconsistent and less than stellar. Well, I am THRILLED that we decided to stay there! I give The Placencia my highest rating. The Placencia is an oasis of luxury and pampering that I would not have expected. The new management has set excellent service as her goal and she has succeeded. The staff is accommodating, welcoming, genuinely friendly and can’t do enough for you. Everyone knows you by name and they truly wish to make your stay perfect by meeting your every need. They clearly take pride in their job and their resort. We felt like we were at our own private resort with a personal staff.
When we arrived at the airport, someone from The Placencia was there to greet us, handle our luggage and give us an overview of the area. Upon checking in, we were welcomed with a tropical drink. Fresh flowers decorated our sparkling clean and stylish room. The beds were soft and comfortable and we had cable TV and WI-FI available (at a cost). The grounds, beach, and public areas were spotless with lush tropical landscapes. We relaxed at the huge pool (the biggest in Belize, I am told) with a swim-up bar and lounges in the shallow part of the pool. Kayaks were on the beach for our use, as well as tennis courts and a full service bar. One night we ordered dinner to be served in the romantic bungalow at the end of a pier. The resort also organized personally tailored tours of the surrounding areas for us. We also noted the hotel had 24 hour security. When our time was over, the resort called and confirmed our return travel arrangements and then took us to the airport. I cannot say enough about this wonderful place. Although we did spend a few days and evenings in Placencia village, I was always happy to get back to my private get-away, “The Placencia”.

Room Tip: Try to get a room facing the beach.

Wow, What a beautiful place!!! The rooms are top notch with beautiful bedding, double sink bath room, ceiling shower, walk-in closet, full kitchen (but you can't cook in it-crazy), 2 flat screen TVs, a HUGE deck, etc. You'll feel pampered when you're here!
We got the Groupon deal on the room, which included breakfasts and a trip up the Monkey River. So that was worth the price. Not sure how much you'd spend there otherwise.
The meals were expensive, so I'd advise you to get a rental car to drive to Placencia for meals. Meals in town are 1/2 the price the resort charges. Plus are much better (try Wendy's or Omar's or Grill & Go for local foods... plus Tutti Fruity gelato is a must!)
Make sure and bring bug spray or Skin-so-soft to repel the sand fleas/no-see-um/gnats. Everyone on the beach got bit up! Those staying on the beach front also got bit up in their rooms! But our room was facing the pool, on the second floor-so we were safe.
We were there on the off-season, so had the whole resort to ourselves!! Only about 6-8 other rooms of people there!! But they keep on the full staff, which is nice. Everything is well maintained (beach raked, trees trimmed, grass cut, daily maid service, full food service, etc.) But things like the Swim-up pool bar were closed. Oh well!
It's a safe location, with a guard post out front letting people in/out.
They have their own Organic Garden on-site, which grows food for the restaurant. Fun to walk through the garden too.
They have kayaks for guest to use (for free). And suppose to have bikes, but never saw them.
Staff is very friendly and all speak perfect English.
Would highly recommend this resort to anyone!!

Room Tip: Watch out for the "Sand Fleas"(or those nasty black gnats or No-See-Um bugs)!! The people...

My wife and I came here for our honeymoon and loved our stay. The very first experience was being picked up at the airport and shuttled to the resort with an engaging/knowledgeable staff member. At check-in, we sipped welcome drinks while our bags were brought to the room.
We stayed in an ocean-front villa. There was a construction project started at the end of the row, but not currently ongoing so noise was never a factor. This did not factor into the beauty of the view for us, as it might as well been unassociated with the resort. The view from and of the rest of the resort was absolutely stunning. The water was great. The only time I saw brown water in Belize was off of the resort. We went kayaking and swimming, no issues

Inside the villa, it was definitely more than we expected: lovely kitchenette, open living area, clean bathroom, jet tub, room safe, and the flower petals awaiting us on the bed were a nice touch.

The staff were amazingly friendly and helpful: everyone from management to the front desk to the kitchen staff to the serving staff to the pool staff to the gate keepers...EVERYONE. In particular, the management (Miss Ange and Kennith) were very accommodating to us...particularly in regards to our excursions.

We were able to see the mayan ruins, ride down the monkey river (also trek through the forest with a genuine guide - aka stuck his arm down a random hole to pull out a crab), go snorkeling and ziplining.

We were able to experience the local culture quite a bit. We traveled into Placencia Village quite a few times via shuttle and via public transit (essentially a big blue school bus - called the blue bus). We walked through the various stores, grocery marts and ate at Wendy's (not the chain).

My interpretations on negative points (if you can call them that) about the entire experience are:
- many people and systems operate on island time...including public transit. Do not expect the expediency of a bustling metropolis
- some days were just way too hot to be outside so either suck it up or prepare to find indoor entertainment
- we traveled on a groupon so pricing on some items were not as affective to us, but be prepared that this is a higher class resort!
- some people complain about how there is no nightlife. Do your research people! In general, Belize is a country where things slow down at the end of the workday...when the sun starts to go down. Further, the resort itself does not have a casino (yet?) or nightclub - it is not that type of resort...this is a paradise -- think: no screaming children, no drunk college students on spring break...just serenity. Finally, we perfectly comfortable with finding the nightlife in Placencia Village. Barefoot bar was crazy fun! We attended more than once, including an all night party leading into a national holiday. Let's just say...live band, thunder storm and of course great food and stiff drinks!

All in all an amazing experience. We would definitely recommend to people seeking this type of establishment
