“Killer Beach and Hammocks”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 6, 2014

What a great place to kick off your shoes and totally relax. We stayed not long enough with the host Ellen and her great staff. Lying in bed in the Jaguar room one could watch the sunrise over the beach while enjoying AC, Bed and Breakfast type accommodations, and Wi-Fi. The restaurant on property was incredible. Fish was fresh, juices were fresh, and the bakery is to die for. The beach is groomed every morning, hammocks are swinging under lazy coconut palms and the star gazing is to write home about. We will be back.

Room Tip: The Jaguar room is awesome. Nice front porch on the beach with a great hammock.

Whenever I need a break and I find the time I go to Placencia.
Since I don't like the hustle and bustle I prefer to stay at Maya Beach.
It is a perfect spot to relax and enjoy the beautiful Carribean Sea.

The rooms are big, very clean and well equipped.
The beach in front of the hotel is small but wonderful. You can see that the hotel is taking care of. No trash or garbage like in some spots in Placencia.

The staff is awesome - always friendly with a smile on their face.

Now to my favorite part... the restaurant.
It is THE best restaurant in Belize (and I tried a lot). They have very good quality for a reasonable price. The combination of the different dishes is just right and they are so creative. Everytime I go there they have a new special or "a little something" I have to try.
They have a wonderful wine selection.

Having dinner there in the evening is a treat for body and soul.

Room Tip: Coconut Room is my favorite. It has a huge balcony.

We have been here twice. The first time we stayed around placencia the second we became more adventerous. The food is amazing! We had to force ourselves to leave the bistro (hotel reataurant) and try the local food, it is THAT good. We were happy to see the sane friendly staff on our 2nd visit as our first. This is a vacation where you actually get a feel for the country and its beauty! No line ups for buffets, no getting your towel to a pool chair so you have a place to sit...grab a free kayak and paddle to the island and snorkle! Definetly do the snorkling trip though. Both times we saw and swam with turtles/dolphins and rays AWESOME. We went hiking in the rainforest, cave tubing, zip lining, tubing down a river, visited a 'chocolate factory' and made choc from roasted beans, talked with the owner about her life, raising children in belize and its challenges. After a vacation like this, you will never think lying beside a pool 'relaxing' is a good vacay again. We brought our friends the second time because we loved the first trip so much, our friends loves it this much as well. Thanks marlon, ellen, cedric:)

We stayed in the upper Dreamsicle house for a week. This is a great house to rent if you are wanting a little extra privacy and space as compared to staying in a hotel. The staff was great, the property was well kept, and the Bistro had amazing food.

The highlight is certainly the food. The menu is inspired and everything we ate was delicious. We stayed in the Jaguar room. It was simple and cozy. Great view of the beach while laying in bed. The owners (Ellen & John) were very nice and clearly know how to run a hotel and restaurant. The property is peaceful and laid back. Overall, everything was fabulous. We would absolutely return.

The food is the real reason to visit Maya Beach - the Bistro is just incredible. The location and beautiful beaches help too. :) We got a great last minute deal and had a full floor of a house to ourselves (Joya Mar Main). It's definitely minimalist - older furnishings/kitchen/bathroom, and the power went out for a few hours in the middle of the night killing the a/c - but it's all we really needed for 2 nights. Note that it's a bit of (an expensive) schlep to get into Placencia proper, so I'd stay up in Maya Beach if you're looking for some quiet, beach time with amazing food. We stayed for two lovely nights and then stayed somewhere else closer to town for 2 nights. It was a good combo!

My wife and I spent four nights at Maya Beach Hotel, in one of their new beach bungalows the "Kingfish" suite. There are two new identical bungalows right next to each other - Kingfish and King Conch - both built in September 2013. These are beautifully appointed, with comfortable king size bed, ceiling fans, small but very serviceable kitchenette and thoroughly ventilated to catch the sea breezes being only about 20 steps from the water's edge. Very nice, private, clean and comfortable accommodations, right on the sand. Also, a very nice small swimming pool which we used every day as the sea conditions were a bit rough and choppy during the time we were there (sadly also churning up the water to a murky brown near the shore line, so not much opportunity for ocean swimming or kayaking while we were there). But the real draw at Maya Beach Hotel is the Bistro, which fills up every night based on it's excellent and well-deserved reputation as the finest dining on the peninsula. The food is fresh, creative, lots of great seafood options. We were never disappointed. Also a very extensive wine list, which I found interesting to read, but a bit odd given that the Placencia peninsula didn't exactly strike me as wine country.
Also fun and totally random - the Jaguar Lanes (bowling!) across the street. Take off your flip flops and go bowl a few frames in the weirdest bowling alley location ever. Maya Beach location is a bit far from Placencia to bike into town (about 8 miles), but definitely worth going in if you have a few days. Easy to take to local bus that comes by during the day on a schedule.
We enjoyed staying here, the food was amazingly good. The beach was not great due to the windy, choppy conditions which evidently had been going on unabated for a couple weeks. Nothing one can do about the weather :( But that said, I would recommend Maya Beach when staying in the Placencia area. Hopkins also has some nice resort options, which is up the coast (North) from Placencia about 15 miles.
