My wife and I stayed with another couple at the Aqua Villa house. This is a home managed by the Maya Beach Hotel located down the beach a few minutes walk. It was the "rainy" season, and we'd just arrived after a tropical depression, so keep that in mind as I go through our stay.
Our days were windy (10 - 20 knots), and the water was only calm in the mornings, but the wind kept bugs away very well and the temperature at the house was always nice. We only used the AC the last few days when the wind started to die down. Power was in and out for the first few days as the peninsula recovered from the storm. Sounds fun right? It was incredible!
We were there for a little over a week. The Aqua Villa house was in a quiet area with adjacent homes on the beach. Yes, you can hear conversations from next door and children playing (or screaming), but not so bad it was distracting. The house itself was a perfect retreat for two couples. There are two separate bedrooms, and a common area with a kitchen. There is a double sea-kayak at the house with all the necessary equipment. Bikes are available from the hotel.
We spent the majority of our days laying around the pool, relaxing, and soaking up the sun. We did do a few tours (Monkey River and the Mayan ruins by San Ignacio), but having your own pool and privacy was nice and tough to justify leaving.
For food there is a grocery store 1/2 mile down the road with everything you'd need. We ate out quite a bit at the Bistro in the hotel several times and the food was always excellent. We also tried the Green Parrot (so-so) and got some pizza from the bowling alley across the street. Yep there's a bowing alley, Jaguar Lanes, and the owners were very nice. Bob even took us around back to see how the pin handling is done by the machines.
The staff at the Maya Beach Hotel were the very best. They were friendly and helpful. Marlon checked on us several times through our stay to make sure all our needs were taken care of. Housekeeping checked in every day and were very good at catering to our needs. They even did the dishes for us when we were away on tours.
If you're looking for a quiet get-a-way, this is the place! We discovered it on Trip Advisor and it's everything we expected and more.
