We wanted to go someplace special for the holiday and we were drawn to Belize because it had the 2nd most intact coral reef in the world. The Turtle Inn for our family of 5 was a great choice. Everything went exceptionally well and our family loved it! The staff, the food, our accommodations, our massages blended together a 5-star luxury experience; one that will be a family memory for years to come.

Thank you, Martin Krediet for seeing to our every need! The snorkeling along the coral reef was unparalleled and the New Years Eve Fireworks and dinner were perfect!

My family and I stayed at Turtle Inn for 3 nights in mid-December, and we had a lovely time.

We arrived in Belize early morning as we took a red-eye from LA. The hotel arranged for our transfer from the BZE to Placencia, which was super easy. We were picked up by a nice air-conditioned shuttle for the super quick ride to the hotel (not sure if allowed, but you could actually walk the distance).

Our room wasn’t quite ready when we arrive late morning so we went straight to have breakfast at the main restaurant. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming.

I believe we stayed at cabana #16, which was spacious enough for the three of us. It had a very rustic, island vibe. I especially loved the “shellphone” - it wasn’t that effective but it was such a novelty.

There were very few guests when we were there, which I was surprised about as it was supposed to be high season. It was good for guests though as no area was ever near crowded. I pretty much got the adult pool to myself.

I also loved their patronage of the local children’s charity and SPCA, which you can donate to or bring supplies for. Best part of our stay - the resident rescue dogs!!

Our stay at Turtle Inn was great from beginning to end. From the initial greeting/check-in to the final drop off at the airport every detail was perfect.

We have stayed at many places in this region but none were up to the experience quality of Turtle Inn. The facility is top notch and the staff is always ready to do what ever you needed. Beach chair? It appears! Fresh towels?... How did they get there so fast? Fresh baked cookies in your room every day? Why not?

A few highlights:

The Room/Cottages - Our cottage was less than twenty feet from the ocean. We were lulled to sleep by the waves every night. The decor is more Indonesian than Caribbean which we loved since it brought back memories of our travels in Indonesia.

The Food - As you would expect the food was great. Two nights a week they serve an Indonesian rijsttafel which is basically a delicious buffet of Asianish foods served right to your table. Don't miss this delightful experience.

Sunset Hike - One day we did a sunset hike to the top of the second highest peek in Belize. A light meal and bottle of wine awaited us at the top. And on the way down we stopped at a waterfall for a swim. This is definitely a must-do if you can tear yourself away from the beach.

New Year's Party - Okay so this was the best New Year's party ever. It started with a great meal and ended with a beach dance party and way more wondrous fireworks than expected. As an extra bonus... Francis Ford Coppola was at the party and delivered an optimistic and uplifting speech on his hopes for the next decade. Sofia Coppola was the dance party's guest DJ.

The General Manager - Martin was everywhere. He was always around to make sure our stay was the best. He is the glue that keeps things running smoothly. There is a huge staff and Martin definitely sets the right tone for everyone.

Room tip: Get a cottage on the beach. If you are traveling with kids there are two bedroom cottages.

Turtle Inn was our last stop on our honeymoon and from the minute we arrived the staff helped to make it feel special for us and everyone wished us congratulations.
We originally booked a sea view cottage, as our first choice of a seafront cottage wasn't available, however after speaking to the brilliant Alfonso he was able to arrange a seafront cottage for us for 3 nights and it was well worth it.
The cottages are very well done with a big living space, a fantastic balcony which is great to sit on at night (it has mosquito netting around it) and listen to the waves breaking on the beach, a well-equipped bathroom and an outdoor shower as well.
Housekeeping do a great job of keeping the room clean (especially with the sand from the beach) and provide a turn down service in the evening. There's also a cookie jar that they top up daily with freshly baked chocolate chip cookies.
There are 3 restaurants on site of which we ate at 2 of them. The Mare Restaurant, which is the main restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner with the menu having a mix of local and other European/Amercian cuisines. We liked to eat locally in Placencia, but the lunches were very good and there was always a daily special. We also ate in the restaurant for the pizza night, which was super tasty.
The second restaurant we ate it was the Gauguin Grill that specialises in grilled seafood. We ate here on our first night and it great, especially as it's on the beach, so you're feet can be in the sand as you eat.
The Laughing Fish Bar on the beach was a favourite of ours and we regularly made use of the happy hour (4-6pm) and got some great cocktails made for us. All the bartenders were fantastic, but our particular favourite was Raul who was always very helpful and friendly and taught us how to make a real rum punch.
The hotel also offers a great array of trips and activities, however this was our last stop having been in Guatemala and Belize, so we more more than happy to just do the snorkeling day trip to one of the reefs. It was well worth the trip as the sea was super clear and we saw lots of fish. Lunch was also included for the price and was just what we needed to replenish our energy.
We can’t fault Turtle Inn and thank the whole staff for making our stay so special.

Mainly very lovely.Breakfast service often slow, very poor boat for journey to reef( could it be because owners large party in residence used the nice boats), wine by the glass pours were 1/6 of a bottle but cost approximately 1/4 bottle which is plain strange, twice gave us wrong time for flight out and then rang us to say airport waiting for us an hour earlier which meant very hasty exit, plumbing problems in aged bathroom which were mentioned but never fixed so we gave up.BUT these are minor-we would have told manager if he had ever deigned to engage with us but he seemed to focus on presumably more important guests

We all thank you for being at Turtle Inn for such a special week and I apologize deeply we did not get to engage. We had 129 guests in house and all are of course equally important. I tried my best to spread my time and sometimes fail to meet guests upon arrival which is always my first goal. Our wines are important and subject to 37% import duty and in fact our selling price is not per industry standard ( which is times 3) - ours is times 2 in order to keep it ' reasonable' . Our pore is standard. I am sorry the exit flight was rushed but please understand that we are at the mercy of a small airport with only two carriers ; the little village of Placencia packed to the rim with tourism during the holidays. We get last minute calls from the airlines who are trying to accommodate many people in small planes along with Belize City delayed departures and there were even a few closures at International due to weather. This all effects what happens down south. Our boats ( we own 3 ) were running at capacity so in busy times we are forced to use local guides with their own boats which means we do not always get first pick and have to get what we can get in order to satisfy our guests with a trip to the amazing reef and snorkel spots - instead of a disappointment by not going at all - I hope this assists a bit in understanding some of the hick ups - and we thank you again for staying with us and for this valuable feedback ! Warm Regards from all of us and Happy New Year ! Martin
