“Great Rooms and Rroperty, OK Restaurant”
Reviewed October 23, 2012

We stayed at Turtle Inn for 3 nights in an ocean front cabana. The cabana was gorgeous, and had a screened front porch, big bedroom with sitting area, separate bathroom with shower, as well as an outdoor shower. There is also drinking water provided in reusable glass bottles with refilling stations around the property. Our flight arrived at Placencia airport and it was less than 5 minutes driving to Turtle Inn. We were welcomed by name (which was really nice) and given a welcome drink. The pool was great for relaxing in, and we used the complimentary bikes to ride into Placencia one day. There is also a desktop computer with a printer and Internet access for guest use. There were a lot of sandflies on the beach when we were there, so make sure you use lots of bug repellant on your legs especially.

The main restaurant was closed for renovations while we were staying here, so we had all our meals under the beachfront palapa. The food was simple - it was ok, but not amazing. If we had stayed longer we probably would have gone into Placencia for dinners. The kitchen did a good job of working around my gluten intolerance, which was really important for us.

Overall, the service was great from everyone that we met, the resort and rooms were beautiful, and we would definitely recommend Turtle Inn to any friends that are travelling to Placencia.

Room Tip: Since the rooms don't have A/C, I would recommend choosing an ocean front cabana so you have the...

Favourite hotel Ive ever stayed in. Had an excellent 6 days here during our honeymoon in January 2012. Perfect. Great watersports and excellent coconut mojitos! Food was brilliant and all the staff very friendly. Seemed like there were 2 staff for every person! Amazing.

We stayed 4 nights at Turtle Inn. Our accommodation was a 2-bedroom Seafront Villa and we tried to restaurants: The Mare Restaurant & Auntie Luba’s Kitchen. We also had cocktails at the Laughing Fish Bar. Here’s our thoughts:

Accommodations: The resort itself is absolutely beautiful. Steps from the beach, it was peaceful and lovely. The pools were clean and pristine. We did some swimming in the ocean but found it to be filled with seaweed. I would recommend wearing scuba booties or wet shoes if you’re grossed out by lots of seaweed. The villa suited us perfectly. The rooms were a nice large size, the bathrooms were also a good size, and my husband really enjoyed the outdoor shower (which is completely private). There is no air conditioning so be forewarned. We traveled in August and really slept uncomfortably. The fan is insufficient against all the humidity. We also talked with other guests and found that those without rooms near the ocean, the humidity was stifling. A few feet back from the sea and there is no breeze. That was definitely a detractor for others.

Auntie Luba’s: A specialty restaurant related to the turtle inn that really wasn't that special. I had the shrimp quesadilla, which was delicious and extremely filling. My husband had the lobster fritter... Very breaded, doughy, dense and without lobster. We both had the shrimp curry with rice and beans. Not very spicy, quite bland. Couldn't tell it was curry. Key lime pie was quite good - made with fresh meringue on top. We paid $80 for two apps, two shrimp curries, one beer and one wine. Very pricey for the quality. Keep in mind, it sits on the lagoon and it's an open porch. Bring lots of bug spray. We wouldn't recommend overall.

The Mare Restaurant: A very good Italian restaurant in Belize. We had breakfast there every morning and really enjoyed the food. The breakfast burrito (with salsa on the side) was delicious. Highly recommend the free continental breakfast – the bread alone was amazing. We also had three dinners at the restaurant. One night, they had a special of linguini carbonara that was so good, our table asked for it again the following night. The pizza was ok, wouldn’t recommend as it was not a crispy crust. The cocktails were very good and the bartenders were very kind with the rum if you ordered a drink “extra strong”. We would recommend at least one night’s meal at the Mare.

The Laughing Fish Bar: Where the bartenders at the Mare were superb, the bartenders at the Laughing Fish Bar were terrible. The happy hour offered very watered down cocktails and slow service. We received little attention (even though there was only about 4 other people at the bar). However, we would recommend the Coconut Mojito, which is not on the drink menu. The bartenders create the drink from a fresh coconut shell. Delicious!

Overall, the resort was beautiful but quite expensive. While the Mare Restaurant was good, it only offers Italian food. Head to town for local cuisine. The rooms were gorgeous; make sure you get near the ocean for the breeze.

Room Tip: Choose near the ocean for the breeze.

If you are considering Placencia or this region of Belize, definitely choose Turtle Inn. Absolutely recommend the beachfront villa. We were in C9 for a week at the end of August. Everything is amazing. No AC no problem. Breeze is always on time and fans help. Indoor and outdoor shower are spa like oasis after a day in the sun. Staff is great. Victor needs a promotion as he is one of the best servers I've encountered. Carlos is an excellent beach captain, and Jesse's margaritas are delicious. Jason was a great driver/concierge for us. Thai massage is a must try. The restaurants are all great. Many choices for all tastes, and Rumfish in town is great. The beach bar is an awesome spot to have lunch and let the ocean hypnotize you. We will return.

One watch out though......the food and drink prices at Turtle are too expensive. It's clearly a profit center for them. We hit the closest store on the way from Placencia airport and got snacks, drinks, and alcohol. Highly recommend this to save some cash. Eat and play in town some too to experience the life and also save some cash. Trust me on this. Martin, the GM, seemed like a great host to us, and he treats his employees well. So, Martin, if you read these, do something about the food and alcohol prices and stop losing business to the local stores/restaurants. Clients are willing to spend $ here but nobody wants to be taken advantage.

One other opportunity is the pool recovery time after a windy storm. Luckily for us, it happened close to when we left and they have a second pool (not by the bar). But, wow, their main pool was shut down for at least 2 days. With my limited knowledge of pools, I could've had it clean and useable in at least a half day or called a specialist.

No place is perfect, but Turtle Inn is close. Great location, great people, excellent service and amenities, tons of superior choices for activities, and attention to detail.

This hotel is paradise! My husband, two young children and I showed up with no reservations and the staff were incredibly warm and welcoming, letting us sit by the pool with a welcome drink while they organized our room. We initially booked for two nights and ended up staying for 5! The rooms and resort area are rustically elegant, the beach is lovely, and the pools are beautiful. Bikes are provided (a short easy ride into town), as well as kayaks and paddle boards. We travel a lot, and have stayed in many different types of hotels (5 star to low end) and this definitely tops our list of favorite destinations in the world! We highly recommend Turtle Inn!

Room Tip: Because of the kids we stayed right by the small pool. It was perfect. We could sit on our screene...

From the moment you arrive to Turtle Inn, you know you are in a special place. We were welcomed by the Turtle Inn GM, Martin, who made us feel like home from the very start. And it felt like a home away from home for the next 9 days we spend in the resort. We could not had been more happier with our honeymoon destination. Everything was excellent - the resort together with the beach was perfect, food & wine were wonderful, and best of all was the staff who gave us the best service of our lives.

We also enjoyed the tours/services (snorkeling, Cockscomb reserve, sunshine cruise, and spa) which were very professionally delivered by the staff. One of the benefits of Turtle Inn is also it's location as it's close to Placencia which is a chill out little town and perfect visit for some good food & drinks (rockin' sea food at Omar's & to-die-for fish tacos at Rum Fish).

Overall, Turtle Inn is a must visit destination if you're looking for relaxing and indulging holiday/honeymoon. You will not be disappointed (Unless you're like one of the people wanting to have a TV and AC, we recommend to stay in one of the classy Hilton Garden Inns).

Once again we want to thank the staff from the bottom of our hearts for making our honeymoon so special. You guys ROCK.

Spent a a fantastic week at the Turtle Inn & in Placencia & cannot wait to return to this paradise! Even in the "off season" gorgeous weather, perfect breeze (really? who needs AC?) & divine staff! I am now a PROUD certified Open Water Diver & certainly could not made it through all the training without Bertrand, an amazing Thai massage on the lagoon, Belizean style dinner at Auntie Luba's, knowledgeable drivers & welcoming concierge staff all equaled a vacation that cannot be compared to others...many thanks to all that made my stay in Placencia unparalleled! Muchos besos...oh & you MUST visit Blancaneux (I have another review for that ahhhh-aazing experience, thank you thank you thank you)

Room Tip: I suspect ALL the beds are as superb as the one offered during our stay=complete BLISS!
