Staying on French Louie Caye is an experience without compare in our lifetime. My daughter and I stayed for 3 days. During that time we made memories that will last a lifetime. The meals that Kala cooked were restaurant quality at all times, and he works with you on menu choices. It was a thrill to go fishing from the canoe, then a couple hours later have our catch prepared so deliciously. The snorkeling around the island was incredible and Kala guided us while doing some spear fishing. We loved the main hall and the dart board, chess board, backgammon, etc and how it's wired for sound and can play music from any device with a headphone jack. At night we had plenty of light when we wanted it, but shutting them off and laying on the back dock to see stars was the real treat, haven't seen that many stars, ever. Look in the water and see the glowing fish. The sleeping accommodations are comfortable and clean, as is the bathroom and shower (hot water too). We felt like millionaires on our private island. Play chess with Kala but be prepared to lose! Catch the sunset from the main dock. Bring swimsuit, alcoholic drinks, sunscreen, flashlight, good book, camera, underwater camera, bug spray, shampoo and be ready to have fun. Thanks for everything Kala, Rahn and Kitty.

“Affordable and Unforgettable”
Reviewed January 19, 2014 for a stay in December 2013

This is an amazing destination. I can't imagine going anywhere else in the world and having your own personal island and snorkeling guide/chef available 24-7. We took our kids ages 9 and 11 over Christmas. We went for 5 nights. That seemed perfect. There is helpful and accurate information in the reviews here. I will only address any area that hasn't been covered well. Keep in mind this is more of a travel guide as I assume you are already booking this place!

Boredom: Nobody was bored. I find myself always wanting to keep busy on vacation. You can do that here. Or do nothing. In the end, I never find time to read on vacation but was glad to have some comedy reading with me. My kids can still entertain themselves playing pretend. My older daughter loved relaxing in the hammock and reading; you will gain great insight into your family. The gift of this place is that you don't have to BE anywhere at any given time. You are there, and nothing else matters.

The beach: there really isn't much of one; mostly packed ground with some sand to play in. The water there is only a couple feet deep and filled with sharp coral. You can swim off the back dock: deeper water there (4+ feet) We were very happy we had stayed in Placencia (Seaspray Hotel recommended by Kitty) for a couple nights prior so our children could play in the waves and swim barefoot at a beach. I would recommend this.

Price: We started with an email to Kitty thinking there would be no way our middle class family of four could afford it. Your airfare to Belize will cost much more. Including all the food, and all your excursions (kayaking, fishing, daily snorkeling, transfer to/from island), you might even SAVE money (seriously many snorkeling tours will be $50-$100/person/day, and I doubt they will let your husband spear a lobster for dinner or take you night snorkeling...)

Electricity: there are lights in the cabana, rec room, and bathhouse. There are 2 outlets you can charge devices or cameras on in the rec room. Another reviewer said you can get wifi out there if requested (we weren't interested). Also, Alberto has a phone if you need anything (they deliver ice about every 3 days so you can have anything brought out to you.) In the rec. room there is also a stereo w/ CD player and aux. cord for your phone or ipod (I would bring your own cord as I don't think the one there is in stereo).

“A 'once in a life time" vacation may have to become an annual event”
Reviewed September 23, 2013 for a stay in August 2013

We stayed at FLC for seven nights in early August 2013. It is hard to put into words what we experienced as a family on the island. We are a family of 5 with 3 children aged 12, 10 and 5. This is our first trip to the Caribbean and it was way beyond anything we could have imagined. Just think...you are on you own private island!! I thought private island get-aways were reserved for the rich and famous...not so, the cost is very reasonable considering all food and activities are included.
Highlights for our family were; endless snorkeling, lobster hunting, kayaking, fishing, lounging, reading, following hermit crabs in the dark, night games with the children, hanging out with Kala and EATING. The food was outrageous... fresh, well cooked and ENDLESS. This is NOT a weight loss program. Kala, our host, guide and friend was a wonderful part of our stay.
The snorkeling was mind blowing, you walk 50 feet into the water, stick your head in and it is like being at the aquarium, corrals, fish, sharks, rays, on and on...
All in all we loved it. I would not go for less than 7 nights but would go for more. August was hot and there was a windless day or two where the sand flies got very excited about attacking us, but the hammocks and cabana are well situated to take advantage of prevailing breezes to keep cool and make it harder for the flies. The review previous to this by the Johnsons from Dallas has all the details you need. They stayed the week after us and I can vouch for everything they said.
Ran and Kitty are wonderful people and assisted with arrangements before arriving and continued to support and assist us once back on the main land.
They helped us with a problem we had while staying in Placentia and have continued to be of assistance once we were home in the USA. You are in good hands with Ran, Kitty and Kala.
Don't hesitate, GO FOR IT, make the time, make the booking it is meant to be!!!

“French Louie Caye (aka Round Caye) a True Belizean Island Experience”
Reviewed August 21, 2013 for a stay in August 2013

This was our third trip to Belize and our best stay yet. FLC is a small laid back rustic island thirty minute boat ride from Placencia. You can kick back on loungers, hammocks, or sit back on the cabana's porch and listen to the waves lapping below.

But wait, there is so much to do on your own private with the Caribbean Sea just a few feet away. A typical island day might include rising at dawn for a relaxing swim in the sea; a delicious homemade breakfast; kayak trip around the island, a lunch of Belizean cuisine; kayak/snorkel or a little fishing ; a fresh seafood dinner that Kala caught that morning might include boiled crab, grilled lobster, fried snapper or conch soup; a rum punch on your cabana porch watching the sunset; and finally a quick dip in the sea before retiring for the night.

It will be a trip you will never forgot be it with family, friends, or just the two of you.

Weather:
We went in August 2013 and were quite concerned about it being one of the hottest and wettest months. The first night felt like being in Houston or New Orleans in August with no wind. We were dripping from head to toe and wondered how we were every going to sleep. We stripped off whatever we had on and took a refreshing cool dip in the sea behind the cabana. No problem sleeping to the sound of the lapping waves after our dip.

The rest of the week was mostly cloudy with an occasional squall and was not as hot. We still took a refreshing dip before bed.

Alberto (aka "Kala"):
I do not know else to add what has already been said accept it is all true. He is your own "Personal Butler" whether it be a snorkeling or kayaking guide; seafood catcher, chef; or a friend who answers all your questions with enthusiasm.

We were concerned about the privacy on such a small island but Kala disappears when you want to be alone and magically reappears when you need him. He has is own cabana on the west side of the island.

Cabana:
A small cabana is divided into two rooms with a door between. Each room has 2 beds - 1 queen and 1 single. Both the front and back of the cabana has a porch for relaxing. The back is private overlooking the water and has a small dock. The cabana has shutters to let the breeze in (be sure to close the shutters if there is a chance of rain or the beds will get soaked - learned that the hard way) but there is no screens or ceiling fans. We brought 4 inexpensive solar lights for evening ambience on the back porch.

Meals:
Kala, the chef who catches his own fish, crab, lobster, or conch and prepares it to your wishes -what else is there to say. He also prepared excellent pork, chicken, and side dishes.

Snorkeling:
You can snorkel the reefs all around the island directly from the beach or piers. The sea life is plentiful with hard/soft coral (there is concern about its health). For the more adventurous, Kala can take kayaking to other islands for snorkeling. A night snorkel with Kala is a must.

Diving:
We are pre arranged 3 dive/snorkel trips with Splash Dive in Placencia before our trip. Ran drove us to the dive shop prior to heading off to FLC to get fitted and fill-out paper work. The cost of the 2 dives is ~$100/day and 2 snorkels ~$90/day for Silk, Pompion, & Ranguana Cayes

Splash leaves Placencia around 9am and arrives at FLC at 9:30. Then it is about 40 minutes to the dive sites. They drop you back off at FLC at 3pm.
Be sure to call Splash each morning to confirm.

Splash Dive is a professionally run shop with good equipment. Diving was very good but Lighthouse Reef was better when we where there several years ago. Silk Caye snorkeling was very good but the other cayes were no better than FLC snorkeling.

Insects:
This was our first stay anywhere in the Caribbean without any sand flies or no see ums (still brought Off). However, July-August may bring a lot of house flies. Kitty sent over some fly traps which helped. Found some Baygon in the kitchen and sprayed the cabana every morning. The flies do not seem land in the cabana if you spray all the horizontal surfaces - bed, dresser, floor, etc. We also sprayed ourselves with Off and the flies seemed to stay away.

WiFi:
At BZE Airport I purchased a sim card for my phone which was a real hassle. You have to establish an account which took nearly thirty minutes and the sim card is good for only 7 days. Ask Kitty if you can use her wifi hot spot (ZTE) instead. The best connectivity on found was on the cabana back porch by the stairs. WiFi connectivity during the day using my phone/ZTE:
Early AM - blazing fast
Noon - slow
Early evening - sometimes can connect but very very slow
Late evening - sometimes can connect but very very slow

Getting to FLC:
We flew AA nonstop to BZE from DFW and stayed at Villa Boscardi. It was our third stay there and would recommend it if you arrive too late to catch a flight to Placencia. If all possible try to get to Placencia for Belize is not an attractive city.

What is available at FLC:
- kayaks
- swimming floats
- lounge chairs
- hammocks
- large reading library
- good selection of snorkeling gear
- wine & bottle openers
- binoculars
- games: chess, checkers, darts
- water is ok to drink from the taps and refill water bottles
- two flush toilets
- hot/cold shower

What to bring (Remember you are 8 miles by water to the nearest store):
- small flashlights
- water shoes
- long sleeve shirt so you don't burn snorkeling
- flip flops
- 9V car charger with USB to charge 110v electronics
- shampoo
- no cotton shirts or shorts, athletic wear is best for drying
- buy snacks in Placencia
- soft drinks in Placencia
- rum & mix in Placencia
- buy 1 liter bottle of water per person in Placencia for kayaking
- beer in Placencia
- wine (duty free) at the airport before you leave (max 2 bottles/pp)
- wine when you arrive at BZE duty free before customs (max 3 bottles/pp)
- sun protection
- beer huggies
- battery operated fans in case the air is still at night

Thanks everyone for a memorable stay. Until our next visit!

“perfect away-from-it-all isolation”
Reviewed August 20, 2013 for a stay in July 2013

Stayed for 3 days and nights and I could have stayed for a lot longer!

French Louie Caye is perfect if you are looking for peace and quiet, no people, no hassle, and complete relaxation.
But if you are looking for luxury then this is not the place. Rustic simplicity is more like it. If you are happy to "rough it" a little, and are happy to put up with hot and sweaty nights (especially if it's raining hard and you have to close the shutters) then I couldn't praise this more highly.
If you want clean sheets daily, new towels, air conditioning, and bar service, stay away! This island is not for you (thank goodness!)
Also, be prepared to get SOAKED on the crossing if it is even slightly rough! Do not even keep your phones or anything similar in your pockets as they'll get damaged. We crossed on a pretty rough day and it was like having a bucket of sea water chucked over us every 30 seconds. Fun though!
Ranny the owner was on the island with us and was a perfect host. Great food (despite being far too much to eat) and always helpful.
Loved the whole place and would go back tomorrow if it wasn't quite so far from England!

“Absolutely awesome experience! Highly recommend!!”

My husband and I stayed in 4 separate places during our trip to Belize. This was stop number two and was definitely a special place! We absolutely loved it.

Things to do:
Alberto was a very gracious host and always made sure we were enjoying ourselves. He took my husband out fishing each day, took us snorkeling and always made TONS of food. There's no way you will go hungry here! He is a great cook too.

Cabin:
The cabin is very basic and rustic as others have mentioned, but much more spacious than I anticipated. The bed was comfortable and everything was well kept. There are hammocks on the deck facing the water that are great for reading in the afternoon.

Bathroom:
The bathroom is basic, but usable. Take a headlamp for after hours bathroom trips. (Nature can get in the bathroom and the headlamp will scare most things off.) I wore flip flops in the shower, but once again, it was clean and well kept.

Main house:
The main house has the softest sand and is always nice and cool with a breeze. This is where Alberto served most of our delicious meals. (He also makes really good limeade!!) the view outside the main house looks like a postcard...one of my very favorite views ever!

Drinks:
We worried about this as we enjoy our libations on vacation, but it worked out perfectly. We brought champagne to make mimosas, beer, and coconut rum with cream of coconut to make our drinks while we were there. We had plenty and felt like we made a good choice. Plan out what you want to take before you go.

Island:
There's tons of things to explore on the island, both before and after dark. The hermit crabs, lizards, birds are all very entertaining. Oh, and the iguana! Once again, a headlamp is very useful once the sun goes down.

Alberto:
I can't say enough positive things about him. He is very dedicated to his job and truly wants his guests to have a good time. We enjoyed getting to know him.

Owners:
Kitty was always very responsive via email to book our trip and to answer any questions we had. Ran was very punctual picking us up from our hotel to take us to the island. Both were very friendly and welcoming.

Summary:
This was a very unique experience, and we hope to return again someday. Don't miss out on this opportunity by being scared off by the rustic nature of the accommodations. It made a memory that will last a lifetime for us and hope you get the same!! All in all WE LOVED IT!
