“Great place to stay in Placencia”
Reviewed June 12, 2012

We stayed here to attend a wedding because we could not afford the $250 hotel where family was staying. Turned out to have been a blessing. It's beautiful, has a nice pool and right there on the beach. We had privacy and cheap accommodations for the six of us. It's in a great location as far as restaurants, tour guides, stores, etc.

Room Tip: Maid service was extra, so we declined. But the place has a washer and dryer, so that was very conve...

My two buddies and I went to Placencia to see the whale sharks over a long weekend. I feel we were lucky to get the top floor apartment at Mirasol during our stay. The place is mostly as everyone describes in previous reviews. It is a three bedroom, two bath, top floor apartment. The apartment is very clean. To say it is “run down” is an huge exaggeration. It’s not perfect, but it’s not in any sort of state of decline, either. There is a master bedroom with a master bath, a second bedroom with a queen bed, and a third bedroom with two twin beds. Unfortunately, the queen bedroom’s A/C was on the fritz. I had taken the master, so my two buddies had to share the twin beds. (more about this later).

The rest of the apartment was in working order. For anyone wanting a hot shower, turn it on full hot and wait (and wait). I didn’t realize this until the third day, so I took a few cold showers. This isn’t so bad in 95 degree weather. The real plus of the apartment is the huge deck on the second floor looking out onto the beach and ocean, and the pleasant pool and deck on the first floor. Please note: This is a salt water pool – rinse off when done or suffer the consequences. The beach is right in front of the apartment, just like the reviews say. I didn’t visit the water (four days of scuba was enough). My buddy went down there and said the water had trash in it. It’s a shame, but the beaches aren’t why we visited Placencia. Another small complaint was ants around the sink, but it’s too small to worry about.

Here’s where things get a little odd with the review. One of my buddies and I each sent a request for information via VRBO (for the same dates). The amount quoted to my friend was 75% of what I was quoted (within the same time frame). This was more than two months before our visit, so I can’t think that the A/C was out at that point. The A/C in the second bedroom was not repaired until the day before we were to depart. That meant that one of the three bedrooms couldn’t be used during four out of five nights of our stay. The owner has offered $100 as compensation for this problem. Alone, this is pretty crappy, but we also only paid 75% of what I was quoted in the first place. Obviously, they didn’t know it would be broken during our stay, but the additional $100 seems pretty paltry for the inconvenience. All combined it’s $600 off of what I was quoted. I think a little more is due to my friends (I am not sharing in the reimbursement for the problem, as I had a bedroom to myself). Maybe they should have offered one of the downstairs units, as both appeared to be empty during our stay.

For me, it was a good place to stay. My two friends are a little less impressed, but only because of the compensation for their inconvenience. I don’t like having to pay 50% of the bill at reservation and the other 50% 30 days before arriving. This seems to be the norm, however, and I can now understand given the wild west nature of the area. Overall, I recommend Marisol for its cleanliness, amenities, and location. I just wish they had offered a little better compensation to my friends. One last thing to the managers: Please fix the top bolt to the deck door. The wood on the lintel is worn through, and the bolt is useless.

The Mirasol was exactly as described in the reviews. Clean, modern and convenient. It is starting to show its age however, we noticed a few broken lights and ill fitting doors that do not open well or latch properly. The airconditoner drain was clogged and dripped condensation on the kitchen counter. Beds were very comfy with nice quality sheets. Remember too, that you are in Belize, not in a first world country, so the area surrounding the apartment is rough and dirty. We liked the beach view, though the villa is set back a bit far. Staff of Caribbean tours picked us up at the airport and returned us on time. We are scuba divers, this is our 9th trip to Belize, and we love Placencia, with it's quirky charm!

Lovely home. Great location. Everything spic and span.
One minor inconvenience was the construction going starting at 8 am next door for a new home.
I would recommend this to any families or couples in groups.

Our family of 14 rented the entire Mirasol Beach apartments for one week in July. It was a funky experience. We loved the sea view, walking out the front door to the beach, asking the nearby construction workers to break into coconuts for us to drink the water, spotting manatees and dolphins off the front porch, and best of all, the comfortable swimming pool which the kids swam in every day.
The location is ideal. it is in fact directly on the beach, walking distance from all restaurants, shops, and amenities, and from the main road. It was quite challenging to find the place from the main road and the manager would do well to advise folks to stop by the office rather than attempting to find the place on your own.
I know that the upstairs suite in Mirasol Beach Apartments was beautiful, fabulous views, very comfortable for the large group who stayed there. My in-laws commented that the suite they stayed in on the north side was very comfortable if a bit dark (overhanging coconut palm). Our suite was comfortable for our family of four, but felt rather bare bones. I will say that the kitchen cabinets were extremely smelly for some odd reason. The air conditioning was delicious.
The sea was nice but the time we were there, July, was extremely muddy and full of garbage. it was kind of unpleasant never knowing what was brushing against your legs. The sea was so muddy that in order to snorkel we had to go 12 miles off shore to a far away caye (which was paradisical -- but the coral had had a bleaching event so was not as spectacular as we had anticipated -- it was depressing to see in person the impact of global climate change face to face).
We took an excellent trip to Monkey River, highly recommended. The rest of the time we lounged about.
Placencia is a funky, offbeat tourist destination, at least in the off season. Mosquitos are fierce in July. No matter what Lonely Planet says, at least in July 2011, it was not an upscale fancy-pants touristic kind of place. It was mostly locals, hippies, and friendly tourists. Food was decent, prices reasonable, good souviniers.
Beware that in July the Trade Wind is blowing which makes a tremendous eerie racket starting at 3:00 pm onward.
The property directly to the north of the property is being built, with a massive house going up which is mystifying as practically every other house in the place is for sale; it will definitely impede the view significantly in that direction which is a terrible shame.
The place could do with a few more games and puzzles, books and movies, and sharp knives and a few herbs and spices in the pantry. It would also be extremely useful if the managers would provide a full listing of "how-to" about the apartment: how to deal with the pool, how to manage the water supply and gas supply, emergency contact information, what to do when the neighborhood children ask to swim in the pool, what would happen if a hurricane would blow in, where to go in case of injury, what happens when the power goes out (which it did during a thunderstorm), etc.
I am not sure if we will ever go back to Placencia, next time we will likely Caye Caulker, but if we do, we would stay at Mirasol Beach Apartments again.

My wife and I spent five days at the Mirasol Apartments. There are three units in this two-story house. We stayed in a one-bedroom unit, which was fully furnished with everything you would expect from an apartment, including full kitchen, cable tv, air conditioning, washer/dryer, telephone (buy a local phone card $1BZ/minute, don't bother brining one from home). They provide plenty of towels and there is a safe and security alarm for your convenience. The apartment is located in the heart of Placencia, and right on the beach. It is about a 10-20 minute walk from end to end. About the only thing you need to buy are laundry detergent, bath soap and shampoo. They supply practically everything else, and I guess prior tenants will leave items (we left magazines and the detergent).

The one bedroom apartment is big enough for four people, the sofa/futon folds out into a bed. Outside is a beautiful view of the beach and a swimming pool (one of two in Placencia we were told.) I think the apartment is a great deal, we actually booked the place through a travel agent/U.S.ex-pat, Mary, who lives 1 minute away from the apartment. Unfortunately, we didn't have time to drop by and thank her for arranging the details of our trip. The apartment is also equipped with Wi-Fi, but we didn't bring along our laptop.

Placencia is one of the friendliest, safest places to be. It is a small sleepy village/town of about 1000 people, but on any given night it feels like 50-100 people are out and about.

This was a return trip to Belize and first time for us in Placencia. Mirasol was recommended to us from the tourism office and we couldn't have been happier with our stay. We had one of two apartments on the main floor, and found it spacious, clean, comfortable with a well equiped kitchen and all amenities of home. Mirasol is right on the beach and also has a lovely, small pool which is very refreshing after a day or diving or snorkeling. A booth to book tours is just steps out the back door, and a short path in any direction takes you to a variety of shops, restaurants and bars. It was wonderful to have the comforts of home, beauty and relaxation of a quiet beach getaway and yet be minutes from the quaint town of Placencia.
Besides the accomodations being perfect, what really added to our enjoyment was the wonderful care that Ruben took of us. Ruben met us at the airport with a warm welcome, got us settled into Mirasol, and took fantastic care of us for the week. Ruben provided recommendations on restaurants, picked us up and drove us when we wanted to go towards Maya Beach and returned us to the airport. Besides taking exceptional care of us as guests at Mirasol, Ruben went above and beyond even after we left. My husband had lost his wedding band on this trip and we thought it was gone for good. We mentioned it to Ruben on the drive to the airport as it was on our minds but not expecting that he could do anything about it. With minimal information, Ruben tracked it down for us and when we got home were thrilled to have an email saying that he'd found it. We can't say enough about the extra care that Ruben showed us. He genuinely cares about the guests and wants to ensure they have a great experience in Placencia.
We don't hesitate to recommend Mirasol for the great location, comfortable, clean, safe accommodations and amazing staff. We hope to be back one day soon.
