Description: We're certainly far from perfect, but we do try our best to create a winning experience for every single customer, whether they are hotel guests, Belizean neighbors or travelers staying at other hotels. Try pairing small plates with wines, choose from our creative main courses, or just enjoy some comfort food for breakfast or lunch. It's fun for us to meet new people and, well, just make them happy! Our casual beach bistro focuses on unique sauces and contemporary, tropical-themed flavor combinations while maintaining comfortable portions. Lots of fish and seafood. Bar service includes a 130-bottle wine list, local beer, rum drinks, and house specials. The outdoor atmosphere is casual so you can be comfortable in flip flops. Belize's "Restaurant of the Year" award was presented twice to the Bistro in June 2011 and May 2013.

The owners are fantastic, the rooms and views are amazing. I have stated in the Coconut Room, the Jaguar Room and rented the lower portion of the house. The views are absolutely to die for. The entire staff is so welcoming and friendly. I truly can't express how much I love this place. The food is also top notch; just the icing on top of the casek.

“Amazing”

Some of the best food I've had while traveling, period. Huge portions, fresh and inventive food, local influence with innovation. Excellent value for the quality. Make reservations most nights because it does get busy. If you're there early, have some of the happy hour snacks and a belekin on their pier.

“YUM!”

The pork chops are to die for! They have a watermelon feta salad that I also loved. Everything is very fresh, the service is friendly and efficient, and the decor was tasteful beach dining under the palapas with the Caribbean just 30 feet away across a white sand beach. We loved the mango daiquiri and the pina coladas. In the week we were in Maya Beach, we ate their three times!

“Lofty expectations but in the end just OK”
Reviewed June 24, 2014

Having heard the rave reviews of the Maya Beach Hotel Bistro, we decided we must eat there. "Best restaurant on the peninsula" is common to hear, but some also say "best in the country."

We went May 10, two days before they closed for nearly a month, although that probably had nothing to do with our experience.

We came just before closing, the last table seated. To their credit, we felt neither a nuisance nor rushed.

We started with a couple of cocktails (average to slightly above average). They had an interesting selection but nothing we had was anything I could not make at home.

We then ordered the salad trio. Same opinion as the cocktails, average. Nothing I could not make at home. To me the cinnamon in the watermelon salad kind of overpowered and killed that dish. The other two were serviceable but not spectacular and my wife thought they were a bit heavily dressed.

We then moved on to a signature dish of theirs that we had heard a lot about, the Leek Flan. This is an ideal dish to share between 4 or more guests because it is SO rich. More than 2-3 bites is quite satiating. It has "bacon syrup" so that should tell you how rich it is. The two of us didn't come close to finishing it.

Last we had a spicy shrimp dish that was quite lovely. The best dish we had that evening, and we fought over the last of it. Again, nothing about the dish was mind-blowing, it was just a very good shrimp dish. Something like you might get at any decent restaurant in NY or LA.

Since at this point we were the last table in the house, we did not order dessert, although even then not a hint of attitude by staff for us to leave. Very gracious.

Our server (wish I could remember his name) was attentive, and outstanding.

At one point during the meal one of the chef/owners (a woman) came by our table. The conversation was rather forced and awkward. She seemed to be there out of obligation and didn't have a lot to say. Like I said, this was two days before they closed for a month so I can understand her mental fatigue.

I believe this really IS a great restaurant, unfortunately the dishes we had on this particular evening did not live up to the hype.

Next time we are back in Maya Beach we will definitely be giving this place another shot because my hunch is there are some truly amazing things coming out of this kitchen, we just missed them...
