“Great Location . Dreadful owner.”
Reviewed February 27, 2007

Yes it is a great spot. Artfully done. Beautiful. Decent food.
But the owner is an utter pain in the posterior. Negative, contentious,
at times amusing but after a while just tiresome.
He really spoils the experience and you can't avoid him.
We saw him treat the staff with contempt too. Not good.
Paradise? An Unhappy Paradise.

We spent six days at Kanantik over the New Year holiday, and it was a truly wonderful experience. The property is an immaculate little corner of paradise. The cabanas are big, isolated, and beautiful. The bathroom are especially luxurious with their wonderful semi-outdoor showers.

We happen to despise big resorts and prefer more intimate places with a strong focus on quality and service. With 25 cabanas, Kanantik is the perfect size resort by our standards. We had a chance to meet a nice variety of interesting people, and the pre-dinner gatherings in the lounge each night provided a natural opportunity to mingle with new and old friends.

The food is excellent, combining great local ingredients with the owner's Italian flair. Pizza night sounded a little silly to me for a Caribbean resort, but it's pretty wonderful to order any kind of pizza you can imagine (like lobster, basil and garlic) on the beach in Belize and have it arrive with the stunning flavor you rarely find outside Italy.

The activities are great and quite well planned. We went on a pleasant canoe trip, toured Mayan ruins, and went diving twice, all included in the bill. While Kanantik is not cheap, the quality of the accomodation, meals, service, and activities make it a splurge that is truly good value.

Some people complained about the owner favoring some guests over others. We definitely found him to be quirky and awkward with us, while much more friendly to others. I can't say we cared that much, but it was odd. We also thought it a bit unusual that the resort does not allow children, but the owner's own 5-year old is ubiquitous -- and not shy.

We did get bitten up a bit by mosquitoes but, hey, it's the jungle, and keeping bug spray around helped quite a bit. We saw no other major critters though a couple other guests did report scorpion encounters.

I highly recommend Kanantik for anyone who wants to splurge on a wonderfully relaxing and intimate resort.

We truly enjoyed our honeymoon at the Kanantik. The rooms were wonderful (especially because ,being frequent travelers on business we were both very tired of the typical hotel room experience,---the Kanantik is not typical it's a very welcome change). The food is wonderful. Whenever i craved anything and mentioned it to my husband, the dish would magically appear at our mealtime. Our flight back was at noon, and they packed sandwiches for us to take with us. Yes, Roberto the owner does tend to be partial to older couples, but he was nevertheless very nice to us (we are in our early 30s). We took the snorkeling, hiking to a waterfall, and mayan ruin tours, the guides were very knowledgeable and accomodating. One of the guides even took us to show us his Mayan village. The cabanas were very clean and the food is incredibly good--try the huevos rancheros for breakfast. We spent a lot of time eating, reading, touring, and hunting around near the pond for a python which was sighted by one of the couples.

Just keep the following in mind and you will have a good time. The resort is in the middle of a wildlife preserve, so you will see plenty of bugs and animals (including crocodiles, pythons(if you are lucky), agoutis, lots of birds, etc). We did not see any tarantulas or scorpions in or outside our cabana, one couple did say they had a few gigantic roaches in their cabana, but we did not have any issues. There are flies that bite..and the bites itch for atleast a good two weeks after the trip, so be prepared and spray yourself with lots of bug spray. You may not be able to swim in the water by the resort due to a lot of silt in the water (we went during the beginning of the rainy season in May), but the snorkeling was still wonderful (about a 30 min boat ride away). We did NOT see any needles (as one reviewer posted) on the beach or have any negative experiences at the resort. If you go the last week of May, you will get a lot of rain (mostly at night) ,but we still got to see plenty of sun and it was wonderful to sleep while listening to the rainfall (torrential rain fall --like you'd expect to hear in a rainforest).

All in all, i would love to visit this resort again. Highly recommended if you are looking for a relaxing vacation out of the norm. If you are looking for the hotel room experience, then go to the bahamas or take a cruise.

Kanantik is isolated and luxurious, and we were pleased overall with our stay, with just a few issues to note.

The location is spectacular. What a luxury to have so much space available for so few guests. While we were there, there were probably only about 12 other guests. So, we had a chef, bartender, activities people, etc. all serving this small number of guests basically 24/7, and most knew us by name. The food was fantastic; pizza night was a particular highlight, when they fired up the wood fired pizza oven. Clifton the bartender is fantastic; we found him to be probably the friendliest person on staff at Kanantik. The guides on the excursions are also fantastic; we went hiking two days and canoeing one day, and birdwatching one morning. Bring binoculars to see all that you can. The cabanas are spacious and luxurious. The bathrooms, in particular, are fantastic, with a walk in shower of river stones.

The only cons we have to offer up:
- We found there to be a lot of biting bugs, and were thankful we had brought a variety of bug sprays. When we checked in, Roberto asked how many bites we had. When we said "none", he said "well, you'll have 100 after you leave here!" Well, we did. From other reviews, it looks like this is not always the case, but bring plenty of spray just in case. There is not a shop on premises where you can buy it.

- We were very disappointed that during our five day stay we were unable to go snorkeling. Each day, they said that the weather wasn't right. Even on the last day, when we left under sunny skies and calm winds, I heard him tell the other guests that they wanted to wait until tomorrow, because the weather might be better. I can certainly understand that some days might be better than others, but waiting for the "perfect" day can be a tricky game in this part of the world, and we were very displeased that we could not do this.

Are these nits? Maybe. But, for the price you'll pay to stay at Kanantik, you deserve to get what you'd like, so don't be bashful about asking.

My significant other and I decided that we wanted to try something different - something more exotic - so we chose Kanantik. I have to tell you it was worth it! The resort, the people, were just amazing! Kelvin, the "jack of all trades" made sure that we were comfortable all of the time. Roberto, Fermenta, Rod, Clifton, and everyone else waited on us, hand and foot.

The cabanas were private and spacious. Only 25 on the property. The beaches were spectacular. It was like being in your own villa. Room service was available if you wanted it, dining a la carte, laundry service, snorkelling, diving, canoeing, touring the Mayan ruins, and so on, and so on.

THIS IS NOT A FIVE STAR RESORT - IT'S A SEVEN. You have to go!

Following a wonderful week in the mountains of Belize at Blancaneaux Lodge, we spent an equally terrific - although quite different - six nights at Kanantik - the rare combination of a long, private white beach on the Caribbean with jungle out the backdoor. Within the several hundred acres owned by Kanantik, there are two water holes, one just a five minute walk from our casita with a second story viewing blind. The first time there we spent nearly two hours - not knowing the time went by - mesmerized by the animal life below and about us: a huge crocodile, turtles, agouti (the favorite food of jaguars - who supposedly haunt the property but the most anyone has seen is a pawprint), iguanas of all sizes and colors (one as big as a German shepherd) and many gorgeous birds and butterflies - wait till you see your first Blue Morpho - the national butterfly of Belize - Wow! All excursions are included in the price - and each one we took was absolutely great in every respect. The day spent snorkeling on the barrier reef will always be unforgettable for us - the coral and fish and clarity of waters better than anyplace else we have visited. We canoed through mangrove swamps and hiked the jaguar preserve - all with topnotch guides, who were more than knowledgeable, they were unfailingly kind. The owner of Kanantik, Roberto, is very present - and that is a very good thing. His standards are impeccably high - and that reflects onto everything at the resort. I was concerned with brushing my teeth - water from the faucet - since no bottled water was provided - only to find that all the water in Kanantik is filtered - you can drink the water in the shower. The casitas are very comfortable with romantic mosquito netted king beds - even though there are very few mosquitoes. The food is amazingly excellent. There is a set menu for every lunch and dinner but you are made very welcome to order anything you want - at all! If possible, they will do it. We celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary at Kanantik - I will say most of the other guests were in their 20s and 30s, our kids' ages - but that was no matter. Our actual anniversary was on a Saturday night. Roberto has a real Italian wood-burning pizza oven out on one of the patios and Saturday night is pizza night. He said, would you rather have lobster, or steak? No. Instead we ate under the moonlight on the beach the best pizza we have ever eatten accompanied by a bottle of great French champagne. Nothing could have been better. We highly recommend Kanantik. Every member of the staff is well-trained, personable and as nice as could be. They will take good care of you!! We can't imagine why TripAdvisor gives them 3 stars - they are a five star!!!
