“The ambiance of Central America, Gwyn Lawrence was an excellent host.”
Reviewed March 8, 2011

We stayed at the Sea Breeze on two separate nights on our way to and from Belize via Cancun - Chetumal - Corozal. This hotel is a little rough around the edges and I would call it charming. The Sea Breeze is great for those wanting a nice place to stop and enjoy something different from the tourist havens of San Pedro and Placentia.

We arrived late our first night and Gwyn was the quintessential host. There's a nice little bar in the hotel and Gwyn is a great guy to sit, chat and have a drink with. Considering the amount of people he must host in a year I'm sure that it's difficult to be continually interested in talking with strangers or people that he'll never meet again. And yet he did just that. In some smaller hotels the owners hide behind their hired staff. Gwyn is an excellent resource as he's been in Central America for quite a few years and has a lot of knowledge about the area.

The atmosphere is somewhat like an old fashioned rooming house. Nice to sit and chat with the other guests. An ample breakfast is available for about $5.00 with all the coffee you want plus you have the option to use the guest fridge.

Depending on the room that you get, the bed may not be the most comfortable; however, the sheets and the rooms are clean. Bathrooms are older and the showers work fine. Good value for the price with a nice view of the ocean. If you are traveling by water taxi to San Pedro, Ambergris Caye - the hotel is a 5 minute walk to the pier. Water taxi to San Pedro is about $24.00 US each and takes about 2 hours.

Will definitely plan for a longer stay in Corozal the the next time we are in Belize. This is a great place to begin your Belize adventure.

Thanks Gwyn -

This is a great place to stay. Rooms are clean and plenty of hot water. The view from the upstairs bar and patio you can't beat. Good breakfast served daily. Enjoyed meeting the owner and people from all over the world.

The place is fine for backpackers and the price is cheap, but did not how to take the owner sometimes he came off rude and other times just unfriendly not a place we would stay again, other places we stayed we much better value, seemed like we were nickel and dimed for everything there adding up to more of an expensive stay.

ToraBelize, Owner at The Sea Breeze Hotel, responded to this review, February 13, 2011
This guest stayed in October 2010 and posted a review in January 2011. Which makes it hard for me to remember specifics. With 2,000 people a year passing through, she may be quite correct in her evaluation of my attitude. I certainly cannot imagine that I am charming to everyone!
But some of the comments can be answered empirically. The room prices are posted on the Internet, in the lobby and on the back of the hotel room doors. Separated out from the room cost is the 9% tourism tax. I do this to emphasize that this money goes to the government of Belize and not to the hotel. We supply free drinking water. The room price plus tax is all you have to spend. No key deposit, no deposit for the remote control. If you use A/C there is an additional charge. A normal practice in budget hotels. You can have fresh brewed coffee for $1 (free refills,) rent a bike for $5 a day. Eat breakfast for $4. Have your laundry done for .50c per dry pound. You can certainly nickel and dime yourself. But I don't make you do it.
There well may be better hotels in Belize, but please share that knowledge with us, so we can stay at them. Simply stating it does not make it true. We supply a clean, safe, comfortable, but basic room with a hot shower. If you want a chocolate on your pillow and a sycophantic smile, may I humbly suggest you try paying more than $25 a night (double occupancy).

For $20 US per nite, this small hotel is perfect for the super budget traveler.. The guests I met there came from around the world. Breakfast is served in the hotel's kitchen for $5 US and consists of 2 eggs (your way), 2 strips of bacon, 2 slices of toast, cottage fried potatoes, and juice and/or coffee. Rooms are bare basic, clean, and secure. There are indoor and outdoor views of the Bay from the upstairs bar and veranda. The bar attracts locals as well as the guests and conversations usually center around politics and economics, usually led and peppered with "F-Bombs", by Gwyn, the colorful owner. A delightful addition is Misty, an American young woman who has a project working with children in the area. She teaches them photography and then sells their work to help offset their school tuition which even in the government schools is high. (Gheck out children of belize.com) A trip to the casinos is only 9 miles away, but you will have to pay $37.50 to "cross the border", although you never cross the border.

After a long drive from Mexico we found the Sea Breeze Hotel due to the consistently accurate advice of our Lonely Planet book. Gwyn, the owner, was friendly, hospitable, and made a heck of a good Cuba Libre! You get the impression that Gwyn has seen a lot in his time but it hasn't diminished his hospitality and regard for his guests.
Unless you are looking for the "Cancun" experience, this is a great way to enjoy the Best of Belize. Honest, basic, friendly, and full of charm!

we, four european travellers, stayed in the sea breeze hotel after crossing the border from chetumal, mexico. two boys and two girls, wishing for seperate rooms, we were very happy to find that gwyn was able to give us two rooms which were very appropriate to our needs.
after having recommended a wonderful chinese restaurant in the town, gwyn entertained us at the bar until the wee hours of the morning. a very colourful character, we spent a truely excellent evening in his company.
we must thank gwyn for both the wonderful breakfast and the car ride to the water taxi the next morning! not to mention his advice about belize as a country, what a knowledgeable guy!
we only stayed for one night, as corozal is not much more than a transit city, a sleepy border town, but all four of us concede that it is a night that we will not quickly forget...!
thanks a lot for your hospitality,
simon, nico, lois and camilla

This is our second stay here at the Sea breeze in 1 month.
Both times we have found the hotel to be clean, safe, with comfortable rooms and always a great welcome.

The rooms are comfortable and great value for the price.
The breakfasts are very welcoming in the mornings as is the freshly made coffee.

The whole hotel has a very friendly feel to it and the bar and balcony, both of which look out over the sea, are great places for socialising with other guests both during the day and evening.

The hotel has wifi internet which is very reliable.
Remember though that if you want to use Skype in Belize you will need to connect via a VPN service.
All other internet services in Belize are as usual.

Corozal town is a nice quiet town with around 20 chinese restaurants to choose from.
There are 2 other restaurants which are reccomended "Patties bistro" and " The purple Toucan" both of which offer a good selection for vegetarians too.

The people in Corozal are very welcoming, easy to talk to and very helpful.

There are a few "touts" in the town selling wooden sculptures, but most of them are friendly and polite.

For the price, the quality of service and the friendly social atmosphere i reccomend the Sea breeze hotel in Corozal.
