We just came back from a 5 night, 4 day stay at Ka'ana and we thought the resort was spectacular!!! We actually tried and wanted to stay at Chaa Creek (which is only 15 mins away) but they were booked. Boy did we get lucky - Ka'ana is way better and much more personal!
The resort is like a mini-Four Seasons in the jungle. We had 2 casitas next to each other. The room each had an incredibly comfortable king bed with white linens and the bathrooms where luxurious (we even had the nice white robes). The staff cater to your every need and we found each person to be so warm and nice. They all felt like family by the time that we left.
The staff go out of their way to make each guest feel like they own the hotel. No matter how busy the hotel was, we always felt like we were the only ones staying there. They arrange tours to leave at different times so that you are often one of the only ones in the dining room in the morning. They offer each guest special dining experiences (for no addl $$$) around the pool or out on the patio so even dinner is private and romantic. Almost all tours are offered privately, and if you end up sharing with one other family or couple, each group gets their own tour guide once you arrive. I highly recommend arranging tours through the hotel.
We had Wilbert for our main tour guide and he was spectacular!! Our kids cried when he left us at the airport and they are still asking about him. The tours we did are as follows:
Jaguaw Paw Cave Tubing: Fun family experience. Very easy tour going through a cave on an inner tube looking at bats. Make sure to go without a crowd - we had the place to ourselves and it was fun and relaxing.
Tikal - Unbelieveable ruins and great day. We had Mario as our guide once we got to Tikal and he was great. It is a full day and worth doing.
ATM - This was the best tour. Our 6 year old did it and it was like nothing we have ever done before. Bring good hiking sandals that can get wet and eat a snack before you go into the cave.
Visit a Local School - Ka'ana arranged for us to visit a local school and donate some supplies. I highly recommend this for any family coming to Belize. The school was inviting and welcoming and the kids all played at recess with our kids. We brought crayons, markers, toys and games. If I were to come back, I would bring more books, shoes/sneakers, outside toys like soccer balls, jump ropes, etc.
Chaa Creek - Butterfly gardens, lunch and canoeing down the river to town. The resort at Chaa Creek is large and beautiful. It is a long ride up a bumpy road that would add a good 20 minutes to any excursion (which already come with long drives on bad roads to begin with). They have a nice new pool with a good family scene. The butterfly garden was very fun for the kids and they also liked the canoeing. I recommend going to Chaa Creek for a day if you stay at Ka'ana, but after a day, I was happy to come back to Ka'ana.
Ka'a,a has a smaller, beautiful pool and gorgeous grounds. Make sure to get a tour of the garden! The restaurant was very good and we enjoyed all of our meals. Try eating pizza and nachos in the bar one night if you stay for awhile as you can only have so many nights of 3 course meals. I do think the restaurant needs to add a kid menu, but they were very accomodating of my kids and their eating habits and we had no problem feeding the kids. Alex was out waiter and he was great!
I would recommend planning in advance with the hotel for tours and meals. The food at the hotel is expensive, and I was glad that I had included my meals and tours in my plan ahead of time. Shakira and Luky were my main contacts, and they were both excellent!
Overall, we had an amazing time at Ka'ana! It was one of those rare, special places where everything seems to work - the location, the staff, the food... If you are going to Belize and want the stay to be memorable, stay here!
The only thing that we think that Ka'ana should change is (1) adding a kids menu and (2) the charge for small incidentals. We wanted to have some wash done at the hotel, but the charge was $3-$5 in US per piece. In a country where the average person makes $11/day, laundry should have been $5/load, not per piece.
