“Piece of Paradise!!”

We recently stayed for three nights in the two bed villa in Kaana Boutique hotel and experienced sheer luxury in terms of accommodation and surroundings. We really appreciated the privacy of the spacious enclosed area of the villa with its own plunge pool and sunbed area. We marvelled at the design concepts and the decor, in keeping with the Belizean traditions, throughout the hotel and the numerous locations presented for dining around the grounds at night-time. The food was excellent at all meals and we especially enjoyed the shared platters of tapas that the chef and his staff so ably prepared and presented each night. The wine list was impressive and we enjoyed some lovely wines with our meals as well as great cocktails in the relaxing bar area each evening.

We found the staff to be most friendly and helpful at all times and the service we received was always given graciously.

Having stayed at Kaana on a previous occasion a few years ago we were delighted to return here and on this occasion found numerous improvements including the addition of the two new villas as well as the upgrading of many other features which really put this hotel in the luxury bracket.

The hotel is perfectly located for visiting many of the Mayan sites and exploring mainland Belize and we would highly recommend a visit here.

with nothing much to show for it, then Ka'ana is the place to do it. The rooms are very nice and I appreciated the environmental sensitivity, but practically everything else about the resort was a disappointment and did not justify the price. The food is terrible and guess who charges USD15 for nachos that feature cheese whiz? I never imagined that such a quality place would use cheese whiz, but live and learn. The rest of the food that my group tasted was bland and I suspect, straight out of the freezer section in the grocery aisle. The restaurant service also sometimes left a lot to be desired. Sometimes, we would wait a long time for service in an almost empty dining room and then have to patiently direct the wait staff on how to serve the meal. Should you have to ask wait staff for plates, cutlery, napkins, salt & pepper and water? And, really, should customers have to train wait staff and then pay a service charge? Most of the people who stay at the resort spend their days outdoors, visiting Tikal or exploring ATM and return back to the hotel in the late afternoon sweaty and tired (I'm not saying the sweaty part applied to me). A swim in the pool would be lovely, but there is no pool-side towel service (or even a bar?). Likewise, it would be great to have somewhere to put wet shoes and and bathing suits to dry. These are all the missing details that keep this resort from being worth the money. I do have to say that one thing that was OUTSTANDING was the turn down service snacks. These little morsels were heavenly!

We recently spent three nights at Ka'ana during our week long trip to Belize. Everything positive that previous reviewers have said is true concerning food, tours, etc. We particularly liked the outdoor showers. We were in the one bedroom villa, but as odd as it sounds, we wished we had booked a "regular" suite. We felt very isolated from the rest of the resort (which may be what some people want!). The resort workshop is near the two villas and every afternoon we could here buzz saws. The last morning they were changing the oil on a van right outside our room.

Lots of little service issues are the reason I won't give an excellent rating. Two involve safety. There was no water the day we arrived, although they did get it turned on within an hour. The day we came back from a full day to Tikal our villa was unlocked. We assume that had been unlocked since the housekeeper left, but we don't know. Nothing was missing, but it was un-nerving. We had our passports with us and other items in the safe. The one night we went into town for dinner one of the resort shuttles dropped us off. We were assured that if the restaurant called the resort a shuttle would return for us or a trusted taxi would be sent. I don't know were the mix up happened but the restaurant said no shuttle or taxi from the resort was available and they called some guy who showed up in a beat up car with no taxi sign on it. He brought his little daughter with him, but it was all a little scary. He did get us back to the resort, but he charged us double what the resort said should be the price.

Hello SugarCreek,
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback about your stay with us. Please know that we take your review very seriously and use all the guest comments we receive (the great as well as the not-so-great!) to continue to grow and become an even better resort. We completely understand how certain experiences can make traveling to a foreign country a little unnerving and we do apologize that you felt that way on a couple occasions. We are very grateful, however, that you had so many positive experiences as well! Thank you for the high praise of the food, your tours, and the outdoor showers (we really like those as well!). We have since given more attention to the little details that you thought could be improved on have put measures in place to make traveling to and from town as seamless and worry-free as possible. It was great having you with us and we hope the rest of your time in Belize was everything you hoped it would be and more. All the best for your future travels!

Ka'ana is nice. My wife and I stayed there during our recent two week trip to Belize. We drove to San Ignacio Cayo and checked in. There is a nice big parking lot to park your car. The front office is nice and check in is easy. They give you a drink and a hot face towel (I thought I was flying business class). The folks at the desk and everywhere on the property are freindly. They are young people and they just go out of their way to make you happy. They say they have the biggest wine collection in Belize. I don't drink wine but what the hey I was impressed. You can book all of your tours through the hotel if you want. They are very efficient. The rooms are very nice. Tile floors, great beds, air conditioning, nice shower, great tv, safe in the room. They leave a snack in your refrigerator each night when they turn the bed down. I could never figure out how they knew when we left. When we got back from dinner there were candles light, treats in the fridge, and the bed was turned down. The restaurant is excellent. We ate breakfast there everyday. We ate dinner there just about every night. We could have drove into town to eat, but why bother when the food at the hotel is first class. This place is nice. God willing my wife and I plan to make a return vist to the Cayo. We have some other stuff we want to do. I have Ka'ana on speed dial. Go enjoy.

Room Tip: Any room there would be great. Just depends on how much youmwant to pay.

When we first read a Business Week article and the comments attributed to the Hannan brothers we wondered if Boutique Resort and Spa would be the right 'fit' for our long weekend in Belize.

We decided to give a go!

Here are some observations:

• The rooms and suites are air conditioned, while most (if any) other resorts in western Belize are not (OK, we could be more sensitive to the environment and deal with open screened windows plus the associated high humidity...but, we wanted air conditioning).

• We planned several active excursions, which would undoubtedly result in extensive perspiration, over exposure to sun and likely some annoying insects (wait, was this a holiday or an endurance test).....so we would be looking for 'comfort' each evening.

• We wanted spacious bathrooms and showers with an adequate supply of hot water (no wimpy tepid dribbles would satisfy).

• We expected indulgent bedding with high count linens.

• A swimming pool would be always a plus - even it the water isn't heated.

• A comfortable spa set up (not just a room with SPA on the door) for a couples massage would add some luxury touches.

• A comfortable and inviting bar/lounge environment for a cocktail or two, plus an innovative wine list is a plus.

• A favorable staff to guest ratio tends to accommodate guest services (staff member who remember your names and address you as such, is appreciated).

• How about a fresh homemade 'sweet treat' from the chef delivered bedside to end the evening (no mints on the pillows, please).

Turns out we picked the right property for our expectations.

The location was perfect; right outside of San Ignacio, on the paved highway into Guatemala....making simply work out of our day trip to Tikal. Additionally, the property location allowed easy and quick access to a variety of other interesting excursions. It was also easy to catch a local bus (less than 1 USD) into San Ignacio for some walking exploration of small town.

Most reviews of Ka'ana reflected good to excellent food at La Ceiba, their hotel restaurant....although some did complain about the higher costs. We sampled and enjoyed a variety of small plates/tapas at the bar and had a delightful farewell dining experience on their fire deck. We didn't feel the costs were out of line with those typical of a exclusive resort.

Chef Armando and his staff offered flexibility in menu items (of interest, since we're vegetarians.....he has fresh vegetables at his finger tips, as Ka'ana grows and harvests produce from their own organic garden.).We quickly adjusted to a traditional hearty "Dukunu" breakfast every morning.... Marie Sharp's Hot Sauce helped to spice up the frejoles! Glad we did, as the extra fortification came in handy during several of our adventures. We also developed a fondness for their expertly prepared and extremely nutritious Chaya.

Obviously Ronan and Colin Hannan, co-owners, had a distinct vision when they embarked on the development of Ka'ana. Their meticulous attention to design elements reflect modern aesthetics but retain traditional Belizean touches (extensive use of great native woods and eclectic art is pervasive).

btw...if you have some extra space in your luggage be sure to inquire about the Pack For A Purpose project Ka'ana supports. We were about to take an entire duffle bag of supples to donate to the Succotz Primary School. This is a nearby school primarily made up of Mayan children, who can use some assistance!

Their passion, if not openly stated, is strongly implied at every turn:

• Ka'ana is a place for special guests to enjoy exceptional and memorable experiences.

Room Tip: Request a casita (we had #6) which will ensure you are away from any potential noise from the busy h...

Staying in Ka'ana was one of the most wonderful moments in Belize! Had wonderful room with outside shower, isn't it nice)) During day time was enjoying pool and watermelon mojito under belizean sun)) In the evening had different tasty things at the restaurant. Ka'ana made whole trip sweet and full of warm memories. All staff in Ka'ana so friendly, that you fill yourself home!

The hotel was charming and elegant. The staff very attentive and did their best to make us comfortable. The welcome experience was outstanding. Dinner was delightful. So many new and interesting flavours. My family and I enjoyed every minute of our stay at Ka'ana. I had the best massage ever at the spa.

The hotel is very romantic and well suited for couples, but my husband and our three grown children enjoyed our time there. We were looking for a place to stay, while we visited the Mayan sites. This hotel did that and more.
