“excellent base in san ignacio”
Reviewed June 16, 2014

We had a great stay in a simple, clean room with private bath. We didn't get hot water, but we weren't trying very hard. After a hot day of exploring, we didn't care about that. The price is right on for budget travelers, and everything in and around san ignacio is easily accessible. Frank was always available to answer questions, and he arranged our tour to ATM caves with an excellent guide, Louis. That was one of the coolest things either of us had ever done. We also enjoyed walking to the market for breakfast, or just to look around. The river is also about a block away, so we spent one morning hanging out & wading around down there. Another great place to cool off was their covered patio with hammocks & chairs. Highly recommend this as a great place to stay for all the adventures near san ignacio.

Room Tip: There are private rooms, and then there are cabins. Some newer rooms will have electric a/c units, o...

We camped three nights at Mana Kai. The grounds are beautiful, next to the market, the river and stores. There is free wi-fi, clean bathrooms and showers (only cold water) and a nice place to cook and hammocks to relax. It just got a bit noisy on Friday night because there was a bar close by with loud music. It costed us 10USD for both of us to camp, per night. Highly recommended.

I spent 3 nights here while exploring the San Ignacio area. Unlike many of the other hotels in town, this place is in its own little corner, away from the hustle and bustle yet only a short walk to restaurants, shops, and the bus stop. It's actually like a private campground, complete with fruit trees, a pavilion, and several cabins and hotel-style rooms. You can either stay in a room/cabin or camp on the grassy grounds, and the rates are quite cheap! I stayed in a room with a double bed and private bathroom for only $20 USD per night, and I did have warm water. There were also some fresh flowers waiting in the room when I arrived, which was a nice touch!

The place is run by a really nice family. Javier was great and he even picked some Star Apples for me from the trees growing on the grounds. He was also nice to talk to at the end of the day, and he filled me in on a lot of local history. The river and the fruit market are about five minutes away, and Branch Mouth (a nice spot to see wildlife on the river) is also not far. The fact that this place was so close to everything makes it a perfect home base for exploring the area. There are lots of tours running from several companies in town, plus the bus goes to several places like the Belize Zoo and Guanacaste Park.

Overall, this was a great place to stay and I hope to visit again sometime soon. The only downside was the woodpecker that liked to drum on the side of the building in the morning!

Clean cabana with hot water, peaceful refuge near centre of town, you sit out on balcony listening to river and the insects. Much better value than traditional hotels in town. 60 Belize dollars a night... Recommended.

Pros:-The location is actually very close to town, 5 minute walk to everything.
-Inexpensive- less than $25US for a cabin w/ fridge and shared bath (outdoor)
- Nice staff- staff were helpful, friendly, and extremely personable

Cons:- Roosters. They crow all day and night. I swear these were worse than roosters in other areas of Belize. We had the worst three sleeps of our life and we were even wearing earplugs. They made vegetarians have murderous feelings.
- No hot water. After spending your days outdoors in the rain, nothing is better than a warm shower. No hot water here at all here though. This was the only place in Belize we stayed that did not have hot water, and unfortunately one of the places that needed it most as the daily high was consistently less than 20 C.
- musty smelling cabin. I know we visited during a particularly rainy time but the musty mold smell was at times overwhelming.

We chose the accomodation at the recommendation of friends. We were amazed by the proximity to the bus station (which was great after a long bus ride!) and the city centre in general. The staff was really friendly and helped us with their useful advice. The rooms were very nice (although there was no hot water). A negative point was the absence of the owner, which made communicating with them more difficult. This is probably due to the low season. The kitchen is actually a iron plate above an open fire. In addition there is no fridge which makes it hard to cook on our own. To conclude, we had a nice stay there and are very happy of the price - quality of the accomodation.

We've spent 3 nights in this place. It is located 5 to 10 minutes walk from the market and city center. We actually wanted to stay at J&Rs guesthouse. As it was fully booked, the owner recommended us to go to Mana Kai and gave us a ride to get there. The place has a huge camping ground-like garden with few trees and several cabanas of different categories (wooden and from concrete), several wooden benches and tables, an open (outdoor, roofed) kitchen that can be used by the guests, and two kind little dogs "guarding" the area. We paid 60 Belize $ per night for a two-bed room with private bathroom. I'm not sure, but as far as I remember were all other options cheaper, then with shared bathroom and/ or king-size bed instead of two single ones. The family was always very considerate regards our well being. Although one needs to supply oneself (they sell nothing), Karin (wife of the owner?) surprised us with a simple but delicious local-style lunch and coffee, for free. The son gave us a list of recommendations of things / places to visit and discover and how to get there with public transport/ by ourselves, so we wouldn't need to book expensive tours. It is no place for people who are looking for party. But the place offers wide space to relax without any disturbances. As the owner told us, the place will be developed further step by step over the next years. Would not hesitate to stay there again at any time and can recommend it without any concerns.
