Well-excavated ruins which you are allowed to climb and explore. The visitor's center provides a good background on Myan history and has some interesting artifacts. Very quiet and less crowded than other sites.

We visited Cahal Pech after visiting Caracol and Tikal. It was significantly smaller than either of those sites but had many similar features. Perhaps the smaller size, or the nice little museum with its maps and timelines helped me to get a better understanding of the mayan civilization that we had been visiting. If possible, I would suggest a visit to this site before visiting the larger ones to help with understanding the types of structures you are seeing and the flow of mayan civilization.

For the less adventurous types. The ruins get a lot of attention and are pretty well excavated. They are right in San Ignacio at the top of a large hill. It's an easy walk or a US$5 cab ride.

There is a nice little museum before you enter the ruins. If you without a guide this provides some good background information into the Maya civilization.

First off I have never been to such a wonderful place with so few people. It was as if we had a private showing. We climbed to the top of the tallest building and when we reached the top we were startled by the screaming of the Howler monkeys. It was an amazing topper to our day.

If for any chance you find your self in this part of Belize, DONT MISS the ruins.

Located on top of the hill, the resort and museum are right next to each other. Great view and food. Try the pineapple chicken. Out of this world.
