Something about this site reminded me of a Scottish castle; small rooms and enclosed passageways. It is a quiet site with historical interest.

Cahal Pech is easily accessible right in San Ignacio. Since my last visit there they have upgraded the visitors center where they have artifacts and history of area. A sidewalk leading out to the ruins has also been added which is nice on rainy days. A must see to learn more about Mayan life. Ask a local guide to give you the tour-there are usually a few at the site. It makes all the difference in understanding of how life was lived by the amazing and intriguing Mayan people.

Walk up a steep hill to this site and reap the rewards. First is a small gallery with brief and informative displays about the maya in Belize. Then tour the site with six large structures that you can climb and walk around. There are very few people there, on Saturday, we had this place to ourselves for a couple of hours. Now that we have had a taste of the ruins, we are looking for more!

Another neat aspect is that this is definitely an archeological work in progress and you can see the difference between the excavated and still buried portions of the structures. Well worth a few hoursand 10 Belize dollars.

While not the best Mayan site in the area, it was an important site and should not be missed. One of the best features is the museum at the visitors center, which I found to be the best overall museum of all the Mayan sites in Belize. Don't skip or rush the museum part. Great info and exhibits there!

This is not one of the grand Mayan ruins but you can easily walk there from the town and explore the site at your leisure without contending with crowds. It gives you a sense of the presence of so many Mayan sites in the area, with large farming populations quickly reclaimed by the jungle. Because it was uncrowded and we could take our time, it was actually more enjoyable than some of the grander sites.
