DuPlooy's hosted our wedding in February, and it was pretty much perfect. We couldn't have hoped to have everything go so smoothly if we'd had the wedding at home. I probably wouldn't recommend an event at DuPlooy's to anyone who has to have everything "just so." We did actually get exactly what we wanted and more from the entire event, but a lot of details were up in the air until the last minute. For us that was all part of the fun, but it might be stressful for people who don't roll with the punches easily. .

To give one example, we wanted a chuppah for a semi-Jewish ceremony on Xunantunich. We found out a week before the wedding that we couldn't bring any sort of synthetic structure onto the grounds. We came up with the idea of building one out of palm fronds. Some of the guys at the resort built it and it was magnificent, but we didn't really start seriously discussing how it would look until the morning before the ceremony. There were a lot of little things like that, and - as I said - every single one worked out as well or better than we had hoped, but there was a lot of uncertainty through the whole thing.

Our group included everything from highly experienced travellers and outdoor people to relatives in their 70s with limited mobility, and everyone had a wonderful time. The staff was incredibly helpful in every way. They went above and beyond in making sure that everyone got the tours they wanted. The regular meals were extremely good, and the food for the wedding was spectacular.

The grounds at DuPlooy's - including but not limited to the Botanical Garden - are beautiful. The beach on the river is a great. We all had a blast seeing the birds in the morning and the kinkajous at night. The guides are all amazingly knowledgable about the local flora, fauna, and history. There is absolutely no shortage of things to do. We stayed a week for the wedding and it wasn't long enough.

We'll definitely be some of those repeat visitors that you read so much about in the reviews. The combination of incredible service, great guides, proximity to weeks worth of things to do, beautiful grounds, and fresh food prepared very well, and great memories are far more than we could resist.

It was great. Totally relaxing, very magical. But found the beds to be uncomfortable.

Went horse back riding to the ruins and felt I could have used more instruction since it was my first time considering the level of difficulty and length of the trail. The guides were the best! Service was great and everyone showed up at our convenience for all the activities and patiently waited while we were always late. We got a lot of one on one attention. My only wish is that I would have spent some time in San Ignacio taking pictures and mingling with the locals.

Food is good but don't order the lamb. 5 out of our group of 6 ordered it and none were happy with it. We were happy with all the other food.
Don't miss out.

Rooms were gorgeous. If it rains you won't get a ton of sleep because the rain is so loud on the roof. The other sounds in the night are great though.

My Husband, 2 children and I traveled to du Plooy's and stayed for 3 nights. The reason we chose du Plooy's was for the extremely flexible package they offer-you can do any tour they offer on any day when on the package. All of the staff were very friendly-Ricky the front desk guy was more then willing to help us when it came to arranging tours, with our family it can be a little difficult most of the time-one night he got behind the bar and boy did he make a great coconut lime daquari. Their birding deck was amazing-we saw roughly 60 species of birds right there. A family of Kinkajous comes down and eats bananas in the evening. Stephanie the manager and daughter is very hands on with guest and extremely accommodating and friendly. The food was the best-and I really mean that-we have traveled all over and it was truly amazing. My husband is on a gluten free diet-they made sure they had a choice for him every night-from soup to dessert. Stephanie even called the people who make the yogurt to find out the ingredients for us.
If you are going to Belize I highly recommend you stay at du plooy's.

We only spent one night at duPlooy's, and I think our overall rating might have been higher if we had stayed longer and it had not rained the morning we left.
This is an aging facility which feels like something from a byegone era. But it is clean and functional. Our room was large with two queen beds, and it had a screen porch facing the jungle on the river's edge. There is no TV, airconditioning, or pool, but that was ok with us.
The lodge is ten minutes off the paved road, not far from San Ignatio. There is a large botanical garden on the property, and stables, and you can arrange an interesting variety of canoe trips on the gentle river at the bottom of the hill ... as well as all the excursions offered by other hotels.
There is a nice open air bar area.
The most remarkable thing to us was the number of guests who were there on repeat visits. One couple from upstate New York was there for the eighth year in a row. I think this is a consequence of it being a family run business. The managers and staff seem to care about the comfort and satisfaction of their guests.

We wanted a Jungle experience near the Mayan Ruins, and at Duplooys this is definitely what you get. You can't get more remote than this -forget about cell phone service- beautiful, expansive grounds....
with a nice beach on a very clean river. The owners are a delight and all the staff exceed 5star service and attitude. Everyone is always ready to help you. The bungalows are very nice - no a/c but you don't need it! seriously, you don't.

Get a package deal & do the tours! The guides are Extremely friendly and non-obtrusive (no one waits around expecting big tips here). Learned tons about the different cultures in Belize. This is a great eco-lodge that inspired us to examine the way we live more closely in regards to the environment as well. If you're not spoiled to the overrated, overpriced, and overdone hotels/resorts in popular destinations and want to try something different with nature & ecology in mind, this would be a really nice choice. Plenty of birds/wildlife/
rivers/ruins/kayaking/tubing/butterflies/,etc. This would be a really cool place for kids who are learning to or need to appreciate nature!

My husband and I stayed at DuPlooy's Nov 1 - 8, just when they reoopened after renovations. Everything about our stay was amazing. Our room was great, the food was great, the bartender and waitstaff were very friendly and helpful. Our guide, Philip, was the best. He was with us all week (we were on an all inclusive tour package). We took tours to Caracol, Barton Cave, an overnight at Tikal, Cahal Pech, a night tour of the zoo and ATM Cave. Philip was so knowledgable about everything - birds, animals, Mayan ruins and culture. He really made our trip that much better. The concierge, Ricky, helped us plan our daily tours and he was very helpful as well. We had no complaints during our stay and were sorry when the week was over. We got to do every excursion we wanted except for Xunantunich and that was because of the floods, not DuPlooys. Everyone was so friendly, we felt very welcome and comfortable there, even on the first night when we were the only guests there. If we ever get back to Belize, we will definitely stay at DuPlooys again.

I chose duPlooy's because it was in the center of many of the Mayan ruins and we wanted to take trips to them that would be close by. Am I glad we stayed here! We stayed in a bungalow which was spacious and clean. It was wonderful hanging out in the hammock on our porch and listening to the birds during the day and the night sounds in the evening.

The staff was the BEST. Jose and Shirley were especially nice and we even exchanged addresses with one of them. The food was really tasty and had all fresh ingredients. While dinner only gives you a meat, fish and vegetarian choice each night, we loved every meal we had. The soup and salad of the day always was wonderful too.

We saw at least one new bird every day we were there. The staff was so helpful with identifying the birds. We saw a laughing falcon, chachalacas, hawks, woodpeckers, aracaris, monezuma oropendolas, hummingbirds and two toucans amoung others. We also saw an agoudi (don't know how to spell that), possum and the kinkajoos (again...spelling) came by every night for a banana treat.

We did not even need the fan in the room most nights to sleep comfortably. The weather was sunny and gorgous. We were able to go on the tour to Tikal, the ATM cave (see review) and El Pilar and Cahal Pech. The drivers and guides were so knowledgable and friendly. I've never felt so welcome before on any other vacation.

If you want AC, bright lights, very hot water and great water pressure, go somewhere else. If you want to appreciate nature as you never have before, come here. Realize ahead of time that there are no computers, phones, TV's or alarm clocks. There's just a river to swim or canoe in, botanical garden to explore, horseback riding and bird watching. We hated to leave!
