this is a warm, friendly, centrall located base from which to explore the cayo district. it's located up the hill (easy walking distance) from the town of san ignacio which has a cool frontier vibe and plenty to do. the elegant lobby opens onto the pool area which overlooks the jungle - very cool. my wife loved getting up early swimming and sitting by the pool, watching/listening to the sounds of birds. the rooms are clean and recently redone. service is very friendly from top to bottom. the bar is nice and has a huge TV which will play pretty much what you'd like. overall, this is a great spot. see my trip report for further details about our trip.

We stayed for 5 nights this Christmas and this was a great hub for our adventure travel to the ATM cave, Xuanantunich and Tikal. The staff (including Patricia and Luis the concierge) was by far some of the friendliest people we have ever met and they went out of their way to know our names and help us through out our stay. The rooms were spacious and very comfortable and the restaurant offered great meals although I would also recommend taking the short walk into town to try the other choices there. The tours they arranged were top notch and our guide to Guatemala (Ted) made our family feel safe crossing the border. We will be back!

In town this is the best option. The rooms are a bit varied though. The singles are small and not very cosy. We had a king sized room and it was good.

The food is good and to be recommended - the menu is not extensive but all good.

In summary it depends what you are looking for - in town this is good if you are after a more "jungle" or "off the beaten track" experience there are lots of lodges of different prices in the area.

This small hotel bills itself as "the only jungle in town." And while it's a stretch to say the San Ignacio Resort Hotel is in the jungle, it certainly offers the tranquility of a more remote setting; and it's only two blocks up the hill from the center of San Ignacio. We wanted to get a taste of the jungle during our three nights in the Cayo district, but we didn't want to separate ourselves from the local flavor of the country. The San Ignacio Resort Hotel proved to be the perfect compromise between those two.

THE SETTING & ROOMS: The hotel is located on a ridge overlooking the jungle. The rooms and all the amenities (restaurant, pool, tennis courts) face the jungle side of the property. If you go out the front door, you can walk/drive down the hill and you're immediately in downtown San Ignacio. We booked a balcony room, which isn't technically a balcony; but it does feature an enclosed patio and it's somewhat elevated above the ground. The reality, though is that you're in a ground floor room overlooking the pool and the jungle, both of which are below. The Regal rooms are apparently bigger, but don't have the patio and cost more money. Our room was nicely decorated and very clean, with a comfortable four-poster king size bed, a safe and a flat screen TV. Oddly, there was a nightstand only on one side of the bed. Overall, though, a very nice room; and we enjoyed sitting out on the patio, as well.

THE STAFF: We met the nicest people everywhere in Cayo, and the hotel staff was no exception. They were always friendly and really helpful. One example: We arrived with several Belikin beers, which had been in the fridge at our previous hotel, and needed to stay cool. And while this hotel has no in-room refrigerators, they loaned us a big cooler. No charge, no problem.

RESERVATIONS: This was actually a bit of a problem. We could have traveled to Belize without reservations, but we weren't taking chances on this trip. And when we tried to get a reservation, I found it difficult to get answers from this hotel. I called and was told to call back, and I emailed without response. Ultimately, I was able to make the reservation, but it took over a week to sort things out. This is one area where the hotel definitely needs to improve.

INTERNET: The hotel has a computer in the lobby; the first 15 minutes are free. But nobody had filled out the usage log in a month, so I don't think they are tracking it closely.

ADDITIONAL NOTES: We checked the tour prices from the hotel and found them to be more expensive than some of the operators in town. It was good that we were in town and could easily compare prices; we found much better value on tours elsewhere and did not use the hotel. Meanwhile, the Running W Steakhouse is very good; and even if you're not staying at the hotel, it's worthwhile to take in the view and a good value meal at the restaurant. We were hoping for a better bar scene, but it was mostly quietly, even on Friday night. It's more interesting to go into town, but even there, it got pretty quiet after about 10PM. Finally, the hotel offers up tours of its own Iguana Project and it is worthwhile. I have written separate reviews for both the restaurant and the Iguana Project on Trip Advisor; please check them out for more info.

Stayed here for 3 nights in December 2009. The staff was friendly and accommodating. We arrived around noon and after having unpacked we noticed the hotel offered a long list of tours. We had a full day tour scheduled the next day, but there were half day packages as well. We called up for a 1pm tour at 12:50pm, not thinking that there was much of a chance we would be able to do anything on such short notice. However, they had a guide ready for us at 1:30. All of the tours we went on had terrific guides. Our room was comfortable and clean.
We ended up having dinner at the restaurant. The service was very slow and the meat was overcooked. We ended up having a few other meals at the restaurant while there and none of them were very good.
We had a shuttle take us to the airport on our last day and after talking to the driver he mentioned that the restaurant is the one thing thing that gets the most comments from guests. The hotel owners are working on improving it and they seemed to be trying while we were there. They tried a breakfast buffet one morning and had extra servers another time.

From the rum punch offered upon arrival to a better-than-adequate room to a very friendly and helpful staff, our stay at the San Ignacio Resort Hotel the first week of November was close to perfect. We did not even have a reservation, but being the low season, there were only about 5 other rooms occupied at the hotel. Staff showed us around the entire property and offered us our choice of rooms. We settled on one of the Balcony Rooms, which had two double beds, full bath, air conditioning, and even a small patio in back (no balcony!!). While not fancy, it was clean and comfortable. We ate many of our meals at the onsite restaurant - breakfast on the patio was especially wonderful, watching the native bird life (toucans, orioles, hummingbirds) flying through the jungle trees behind the property and listening to their calls! The staff was about as friendly and helpful as any I have seen in a hotel. When we returned at the end of the day after touring Mayan ruins or trekking through ATM Cave, they would ask how we enjoyed the tour. And each morning when we passed by the front desk, they would always ask where we were going for the day and if we needed anything. Part of our hotel package included a tour of the medicinal plant trail and iguana project behind the hotel. Eddie was a great guide, and if you go and he asks you to try a termite from the termite nest he showed us, try one! They taste like carrots! The tours at the hotel are really worthwhile - both fun and a great learning experience! The location is good - the walk down the hill to town is easy but you will feel it on the way back up. And being up the hill away from the bustle and noise of San Ignacio was great - I could see why some reviewers stated that the more in-town hotels and guest houses had issues with noise. The Cahal Pech ruins are only a 15 minute walk (uphill!!) the other way from town and are the closest ruins to San Ignacio.

We would certainly recommend the San Ignacio Resort Hotel to anyone that wants a comfortable, air conditioned room, with a good onsite restaurant, and a great, friendly staff. And being a 10 minute walk from shops, restaurants, and tour offices made the hotel really convenient. It made our week in Belize even more special!
