“Can't Wait to Return!”
Reviewed December 15, 2008

I recently spent 3 nights at the San Ignacio Hotel, and can not wait to return! The hotel is perfectly located, at the top of a hill over looking the city. It is a quick 5 minute walk to all of the restaraunts and bars in San Ignacio. And it is only about a 10 to 15 minute walk in the opposite direction to Cahal Pech Mayan ruins(although you have to climb a pretty steep hill!).

Besides the location, the property itself is lovely. The lobby, dining areas, and pool are all modern and stunning. We ate breakfast and dinner at the hotel, and the food was delicious. It was more expensive than what you would pay for a meal in town, but it was not by any means a rip off. And happy hour at the hotel bar was a GREAT deal on local rums! The wait staff was so friendly and helpful, it was amazing. They went out of their way to talk about what we had done that day or to give suggestions for our next day activities.

The pool is quite large, and you can order drinks and food to be brought to your chair. We took the iguana project tour, which was unique and provided for some awesome pictures! Our tour guide Eddie was funny an knowledgeable. Tennis equipment is available for use free of cost, and we spent an hour hitting balls around on the old tennis court. Great perk! The nature trails were underwhelming, as they appeared to be in serious need of maintenance, and the path was often covered and we couldn't walk very far. From reading another post, it makes sense that the recent flooding may have caused these problems. No big deal.

The rooms are standard, but nice. We stayed in a room, with 2 beds which opened onto a "backyard" patio. It was pretty humid in San Ignacio, and the room was slightly damp, but it was definitely not a big issue. The AC worked well, and there was also a ceiling fan. Cable TV and standard bathroom amenities also included.

I have already started looking at availability at the San Ignacio Resort Hotel for my next visit to Belize! I loved this property, and also loved the town of San Ignacio. Can't wait to go back, and highly reccommend you get there to check it out for yourself!

  • Liked — So many extra perks to the location, like the tennis courts, delicious food / room service, and on site nature trails. Plus amazing pool!
  • Disliked — One day the water was turned off for about 30 minutes, right as I was trying to get in the shower! Also overpriced tours, don't book through the hotel.

My husband and I recently spent five wonderful days at the San Ignacio Resort Hotel in the Cayo District of Belize. We were greeted at the airport by Ted who serves as driver and tour guide for the hotel. He was friendly, gracious and knowledgeable about the area and provided us with a wealth of information regarding the country. We were informed Belize was experiencing the worst floods in 35 years and most of the major attractions in the area were under water. We decided, however, to make the best of this situation and continued on to the hotel. As we entered the lobby, we felt immediately welcome and at home. The San Ignacio Resort Hotel is located up the hill from the charming Town of San Ignacio. A five minute walk will take you into town. The lobby is very impressive as elegant marble covers the walkways, steps and columns inside. A spacious and open air feeling has been created with the use of decks and patios that overlook the town, the swimming pool and the tropical jungle surrounding the hotel. We were greeted at the front desk by friendly staff and given a quick tour of the hotel while Ted carried our bags to our room. A welcoming drink of our choice was included in the quick tour. Our room was clean, comfortable and complete with a fan and air conditioning to ward off the humid Cayo days. Our room opened onto a lovely, tiled patio that overlooked a tropical courtyatd complete with Tangerine trees laden with fruit which we picked and shared with the birds and resident Iguanas. We had a choice of dining options, either in our room, in the colorful Belizian style steakhouse restaurant or on the lovely covered patio that overlooked a great trumpet tree visited by numerous birds daily. We opted to eat all of our meals on the patio. The wait staff was very friendly, cordial and willing to make our dining expereince a pleasurable one. The food was great, especially the Serviche which we had with every dinner. The swimming pool was a refreshing way to cool off after an activity in the hot Cayo sun. There is a tennis court but we did not use it. We enjoyed the tour of the Iguana Project run by the hotel and adopted two Iguanas, with adoption papers no less, who we named Barack and Hillary. Eddie will E-mail us from time to time to let us know of their progress growing up. The hotel has a wonderful medicinal walk you can take but the rains had rendered the paths too muddy and slippery to use during our stay. The Cahal Pesch ruins were a steep hike up the road from the hotel, so we took a taxi instead of the long and hot walk. It was the only Myan ruin open in the country at the time and worth seeing. A small casino is located next to the hotel which provided us with free drinks and a few hours of fun one rainy afternoon. We felt sad to leave when the time came to continue on to San Pedro . We had throughly enjoyed our stay at this gracious hotel that provided us with such a pleasurable and relaxing stay. The staff was exceptionally great and we cannot thank them enough for their help. We decided we would return another time to enjoy the area when flooding was not an issue and would again stay at the centrally located and gracious San Ignacio Resort Hotel.

Not what we expected but made the most of it. Rooms were under construction, that is always fun. Request a room away from the street, pretty noisy. The help is very nice. Definitely take the guided tour right behind the property and walk to Cahal Pech ruins, both are very fun. Watch for 'Belizian' errors in the restaurant. Almost paid 140 dollars for a glass of wine instead of 14.

We just returned from our honeymoon in Belize and really enjoyed our stay at the San Ignacio Resort! We booked the master suite and it definitely lived up to all of our expectations. We were plesantly surprised that the actual room was nicer than the pictures even showed which is not the case with all places you see online. If you are looking for luxury and still a taste of the local culture and people, this is a great spot. Staff were all extremely friendly and helpful. The bar makes a great rum punch drink that we quickly got addicted to. Overall we had a very enjoyable stay here and would definitely come back. I'm not sure what the normal rooms are like but the master suite is definitely worth the expense if you are on a honeymoon or special occasion. It is nice to be right in town as well and have access to shops and eating locations.

We will be back!

Great location, good food, our tour guide Ted was the best. Would recommend to friends and would like to return someday. Enjoyed side trips to Tikal and Cave Tubing. Friendly staff.

This place was amazing. My wife and I stayed here during the second part of our honeymoon and we wish we had spent our entire time here. The hotel is beautiful but it is the staff which makes all the difference. They are the most friendly and helpful group I have ever experienced at a hotel and they made all the difference.

The rooms were very clean and nicely decorated. If you have a chance to spend the night in the master suite you should definitely take it. All the rooms had AC and the showers were always hot. The restaurant was very nice and reasonably priced.

Patricia always seemed to go above and beyond to make our time there as pleasant as possible. We had the same guide (Alexi) everyday we were there which was very pleasant and his knowledge of the area and everything we were doing was incredible. If you are going on any tours, especially of the Mayan kind, we strongly recommend Alexi.

Their iguana exhibit and conservation project is superb. Eddy, who seems to run the project, is great and the whole experience of being covered in iguanas was fantastic. Our biggest regret of the experience was that we didn't stay long enough but we have every intention of returning.

MY TRAVEL STYLE: If possible, I try to stay away from business and strongly prefer resorts that resemble the Four Seasons, Aman, and Oberoi but try to find similar properties at lower cost. I seek out the “wow” experiences and I encourage you to view hotels I have stayed at and their respective reviews (by clicking on my name).

LOCATION: Excellent if you want to be walking distance to town. Excursions in town are a fraction of the price charged by the other nice lodges far from town. Taxi’s from other hotels outside of town can cost $20-40 one way which probably means most meals will be eaten at the hotel. It’s nice to have so many restaurants just a few minutes walk to town. The walk back to the hotel from town is about 5 minutes and up a very steep road.

BEST WAY TO GET THERE: We took a taxi from the Belize City Municipal Airport to San Ignacio for about US$110 one way. The trip took about 1.5 hours. There are buses from Belize City that run often but your fellow passengers may be chickens or worse. There is an express bus that leaves in the very early morning that is nicer than the local buses (which take 3 hours).

TYPE OF ROOM:

Balcony room.

BED/SHEETS/PILLOW: Bed is soft and comfortable with good linens and down pillows.

LIGHTING: Adequate lighting in the bedroom and bathroom.

BATHROOM/SHOWER: Bathroom is on the small side and pleasant but definitely falls short of luxurious. Towels are more like pool towels than soft bathroom towels. Shower has medium to strong water pressure and the temperature can be made hot if desired (after letting it run for a while).

TOILETRIES: Soap and shampoo are affixed to a dispenser in the shower. Probably best to bring your own.

CLEANLINESS: Room and bathroom are very clean.

A/C: Quickly and quietly would get the room cool. There is also a ceiling fan in the room.

CLOSET SPACE: Tiny closet has no doors and would make Ikea look high end.

STYLE OF ROOM: Basic, comfortable, but nothing special. Access to power outlets required moving the bed from the wall.

QUIET/MORNING LIGHT: Room was very quiet. Neighbors balconies are very close and it’s easy to hear/see them when they are outside. The curtains are too thin to block most of the morning sunlight.

FOOD: Only had breakfast and the pancakes were good, but nothing to write home about.

TV/INTERNET: Never watched TV but the internet is wireless only and is of better than average speed. Cost for internet is US$15 for a 24 hour continuous period.

SERVICE: Staff was friendly and helpful.

SUMMARY: This hotel is definitely the best hotel in a less than mediocre town. If you have the money to spend and don’t mind spending much more for tours, eating dinner every night in the same hotel (or if you have your own car), I would recommend staying at a lodge that is outside of town. If you are are bit more on a budget, it may be a good idea to stay at the SI Resort for a few nights to do the activities and then stay at a jungle lodge for a few nights R&R. I recommend this hotel as the best in town but it’s definitely only a good place to stay if you want to save a few dollars in taxi rides and tour costs.
