“Great little place with the perfect setting”
Reviewed January 1, 2013

Jungle setting with hiking trails, lush vegetation, and lots of birds a mile from the heart of San Ignacio. Cab rides are $5 US each way from "downtown". Food is expensive but wonderful. Staff is friendly and will Gchat with you before your trip. Cabins were renovated but the rooms are shabby. Overall, a great place to spend some time if you're on a budget and want to get out of town.

My wife and son had the privilege of staying at Maya Mountain Lodge. The new owners were very welcoming and attentive. The staff very friendly. The breakfast was great and fulling. We love the casitas. One of the most unique thing about Maya Mountain Lodge is the location. It's a five minute drive out of town but yet your accommodation is in the rainforest. Can't ask for more. Would stay here again for sure.

Our first stop in Belize was Maya Mountain Lodge. We drove to the property and were promptly greeted. Everyone was so nice and welcoming. We opted for dinner the first night and it was a a delicious 5 course meal. We already had our tours booked, but we could as easily booked through Maya Mountain. The property is stunning - so many tropical plants, flowers, birds and butterflies. The room was very comfortable. We had AC, but didn't use it because the fan was enough. The last morning we met the owner and it was so nice to chat and find out more about him and the hotel. Our stay was so nice we didn't want to leave!

We are on our second visit to the Maya Mountain Lodge (the first being December 2011). Despite arriving at 2am, we were quickly shown to our room (#5) by the night staff. This morn, the on-site manager, Elmer, greeted us warmly and presented us with a lovely breakfast of fresh fruit, banana pancakes, freshly made juice (you'll never guess the five ingredients) and Guatemalan coffee. The food was delicious and plentiful. Even though the longtime owners are no longer running the day to day operation (they are now living in downtown San Ignacio), it is the same, great Maya Mountain Lodge experience that we enjoyed on our previous visit.

My wife and I stayed there for 2 days. The people that work there are very friendly and helpful. You cannot see any other color but green everywhere. There is not one thing we did not like. Food prices seemed a little high

Situated in the jungle outside Santa Elena, a 20 min. walk (or a $10 BLZ cab ride) from the bustle of San Ignacio, Maya Mountain Lodge may have changed from the eco-friendly, peaceful reteat it may have once been under the original owners. Beautiful toucans can be seen outside in the early mornings! But if you aren't on day-long excursions, you may hear noisy renovations, an adjoining subdivision under construction and poor, chained-up, barking from frightening guard dogs that surround the property. No units in the subdivision have been sold by the original owners of the Lodge, yet the jungle has been deforested and mountains excavated to make way for what in Belize must be considered highway-quality road infrastructure. (In the owner's defense, the roads were build of that stature to meet "building codes", since she refuses to pay anyone off.) Fortunately, the roads fork around an unexcavated Maya ruin.
The somewhat-stiff new manger Michael excepted, the staff has transitioned well from the old management and is warm, helpful and treats you like family. They went above and beyond what can be considered excellent hospitality by caring for our sick child, driving us to the city and accommodating our vegetarian diet with incredible international meals (50 BLZ/ plate).
Do choose to stay in the thached-roof private cottages (250 BLZ) rather than in the lodge but either way, expect company in the form of lizards, ants and mosquitoes, as it is the jungle. There is a pool and trail but the pool is small and shallow while the trail needs maintenance and lacks photo-ops. Better to hike to the aformentioned roads and find trails off of those.
The Maya Mountain Lodge manager is still the owner of a CAYO adventure tours, and can schedule excellent, personalized tours by highly informed guides (Botanic Gardens, Xunantunich, Tikal and Caracol were our trips).

We regret that this guest did experience repairs during their stay. Some urgent repairs were needed at the time this guest was in the lodge. Noises were only during the day when almost all guests were out and management tried to insure that guests were minimally impacted. The repairs were completed and there is absolutely no other development, building or construction in the entire neighborhood. The lodge was closed in Sept and October when the roads for the eco-development next door were put in. There is a huge buffer between the lodge and the eco-housing development so that guests will not be affected later when lots are sold. The roads are built according to government specification but that is the only clearing and the trees and ruins have been protected. We hope to provide San Ignacio’s first eco-neighborhood. The open and green space exceeds government requirements and are intentionally situated between the lodge and the new development.
All nature trails are in a natural state and we do not intend to put gravel or sawdust on them. We also have refrained from chopping out “photo opts”. All cottages have mosquito screens and air-conditioning, but the guest is correct that we do not do spraying as we prefer to have the beautiful butterflies and an occasional ant than a destroyed environment. The owners are very happy with the wonderful job that Michael, Maria, and their staff are doing as the new operators of lodge. The great guest reviews testify to their caring and warm manner.

We loved our stay here! So laid-back and relaxing. Never once did we feel hurried or a bother to the staff. They definitely went out of their way to provide great service and make us feel at home! We would definitely stay here again!
