“Terrific Low Key Place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 26, 2008

A great place to stay and great value. 25 spacious, simple but nicely finished bungalow cabins in a garden setting on a slight hill. Has a pool and bar but not a noisy, resort-type atmosphere-not many people and more designed for a quiet getaway or especially as a base for various activities, for which they usually supply the transport and excellant guides.

Our breakfast and three course dinner was included, and the food wasn't fancy or upscale but was very nicely done with quality ingredients and a wide menu. The staff was small and sometimes dinner took awhile but it gave us time to talk and overall service was very friendly and competent.

My group, did tubing through a cave, Tikal Mayan site, and the ATM cave. The tubing was terrific, Tikal spectacular, but the ATM cave the surpise standout, absolutely unique. if you go there, be prepared to wade several streams, swim into the cave entrance, wade through neck high water and crawl through tiny rock wormholes, all leading to a huge dry cavern where the skeletons of sacrificed Mayans lay in their original places .

A terrific four days.

Windy Hill was very relaxing. The cabins were roomy and accomodated our entire family without having to double up on beds or feel cramped. The grounds are beautiful. Lots of local plant life. We went with the all inclusive and the meals were delicious and they were pretty accomodating on changes to make us happy. Service was top notch. We did a lot of excursion activities during our stay and all through them we found they had excellent guides; some of the best I've had anywhere in the world. They made our trip! In looking at some of the other folks touring at the Mayan ruins; our guides seemed better prepared and organized. Their pool was centrally located and had a beautiful view from atop the hill. This is a family owned business and we met them several times and were even invited to a family birthday gathering as if we were a part of the family. They take a lot of pride in their resort. If you want a relaxing home base for adventures out in nature; it's wonderful. If you're looking for the typical beach type mega resort with night life; this probably isn't what you are looking for.

  • Liked — That it wasn't an impersonal mega resort; they cared and you could see it all around you
  • Disliked — Nothing

My husband and I spend the first few days of our honeymoon at Windy Hill. We had such a great time! The staff was absolutely wonderful. From our driver, Lion, who picked us up at the airport to every guide we had, all of the staff members were friendly, courteous and helpful. Juice, our tour guide to Tikal, was incredibly knowledgeable and funny. He even pointed out a Keel Billed Toucan to us as we walked through Guatemala.

The food was also fabulous. I would recommend the Caribbean shrimp on the dinner menu and my husband loved anything that included fried jacks. We always asked the staff for their recommendations and were pleasantly surprised with the results.

We would definitely recommend this hotel for people who love adventures but like to be able to wind down at the end of the day. The infinity pool over looking the Mayan Mountains isn't exactly a terrible way to end a trip into the jungle.

  • Liked — The staff and the views
  • Disliked — The black outs were kind of a bummer.

The place was simple but beautiful. The staff was wonderful and the tour guides extremely knowlegable, especially Jorge and Martin. Staff quick to address your every concern--bartender and Jack of all trades "Smokey" made the stay very enjoyable. I would recommend staying at Windy Hill if you plan to visit western Belize/Guatamala.

My daughter and I recently stayed at Windy Hill Resort for a short vacation. I wish we had booked for a longer stay. The grounds were beautiful and well maintained. The staff were all friendly and very helpful. We had very good food and service at the resort's restaurant, The Black Orchid. Also, not one problem with bugs of any kind. One very important note, LOCATION IS EVERYTHING!!! We were very lucky that the resort is right outside San Ignacio. I had looked into other resorts, and luckily, chose Windy Hill. Be aware, that many of the other resorts, some as nice or even nicer, are very isolated. Meaning, they are located very far from town down MILES of VERY bumpy gravel/dirt mountain roads. We passed several of them on our way to tour Caracol. It pretty much narrows your sight-seeing options if you book one of the resorts located in an isolated area. Also, it would be inconvinient to eat at any other location other than that resort's restaurant. Make sure to ask about the location ahead of time!!! Windy Hill has AC, a pool and a television in the room whereas some of the other resorts do not. Also, Windy Hill has an on site office to book tours, however, they are a little more expensive than some I priced. If you get lucky and book tours through COME TOUR BELIZE ask for Sergio--he's awesome!!! He has much knowledge of the ruins, being of Mayan descent and all. He also gave us many helpful travel hints, and shares his wealth of information in regards to local culture and customs.

Windy Hill is a great choice for so many reasons - it is in a beautiful location and the professional staff there can arrange anything you would like to do during your stay. It is about one and one half hours away from Belize International airport.

Because this was our first time arranging a trip directly with a resort and not through a travel agent, we were a little anxious. But, from the time we were picked up at the airport to the time we left, everything was extremely well organized.

The resort with its private cabins are built on the side of a hill and the beautiful breeze at all times meant that we could leave our windows open 24h hours per day and enjoy nature. We never did have to use the air conditioning, even though the temperature was in the high eighties while we were there.

The small, but beautiful infinity pool overlooked the countryside and the property. There were may birds on the resort, including a resident scarlet macaw "Mac" ,and a parakeet/lorakeet "Sam" who was very verbal and entertaining. Both of these birds were rescues.

We found the large menu with a blend of Belizean and Mediterranean dishes to be very interesting. We enjoyed every meal that we had there, even the sandwiches that were provided for us on our arrival at the airport and on one of our day trips.

We were on a package that included some trips and all of our meals. You could choose from the regular menu, but all drinks (even tea or coffee) were extra.

The staff were all very courteous and professional. The trips that we went on (Belize Zoo, Tikal ruins in Guatemala, Caracol ruins and Xunantunich ruins in Belize) were all extremely well organized and the staff were very knowledgeable. Each night after dinner, the waiter would explain our trip for the next day, time of departure, what we needed to take, etc. - all very helpful.

This is a very relaxing, quiet resort and we enjoyed early mornings being woken up by the birds. There is a bar on the grounds, but we did not find any noise at night at all at the resort.

  • Liked — Beautiful natural woods & indigenous crafts used in the cabins, privacy and quiet
  • Disliked — nothing, everything was great

Good and Bad.
Check all your bills, they overcharged and padded the bills daily (including tour bills, meals, bar).
They had a few tours but were unhelpful when they did not have a tour. Fortunately there are many tour businesses in San Ignacio that are very helpful and much more reasonably priced.
The rooms were very nice, the restaurant had a good selection.
