We wanted to visit the Natural History Museum and see the Blue Morpho Butterfly Farm so even though we weren't staying on the property, we hired a cab to take us out to Chaa Creek. The folks at the front desk were so accommodating, that we were able to book their guide for a sunset canoe trip as well...we ended up starting a tab and staying the day! We grabbed a bite to eat at the lovely restaurant, and then we walked around the museum. It's small, but amazingly thorough, and does a nice job of presenting the highlights of the Cayo area...natural, geographical, historical, etc. David was our guide at the Butterfly Farm, and he showed us all the stages in the life of a Blue Morpho. We had some time to kill before the canoe tour, so we went for a hike along some of Chaa Creek's nature trails. They are well marked, and have interpretive signs, so we learned about some of the local plants and trees. We cooled off at the bar with a drink before we met David again for the river trip. He was a very nice guide, and had to work very hard to paddle us upstream against the current! He pointed out quite a few birds and things along the way. It was a very enjoyable paddle. When we arrived back, we once again had dinner at the restaurant...one of the best meals we had in Cayo. We were very impressed with the level of service at Chaa Creek. It is a beautiful facility, and we were treated like special guests, when in fact we were only visitors for the day.
