Their museum has a very good exhibit on the relocation project for the howler monkeys, as well as exhibits on other topics. Our tour guide was very good about explaining the whole life-cycle of the butterfly. They raise blue morphos butterflies there and they are simply georgeous.

Worth visiting if you are staying at the lodge, but probably not worth a special trip unless you are visiting for another purpose.

We wanted to visit the Natural History Museum and see the Blue Morpho Butterfly Farm so even though we weren't staying on the property, we hired a cab to take us out to Chaa Creek. The folks at the front desk were so accommodating, that we were able to book their guide for a sunset canoe trip as well...we ended up starting a tab and staying the day! We grabbed a bite to eat at the lovely restaurant, and then we walked around the museum. It's small, but amazingly thorough, and does a nice job of presenting the highlights of the Cayo area...natural, geographical, historical, etc. David was our guide at the Butterfly Farm, and he showed us all the stages in the life of a Blue Morpho. We had some time to kill before the canoe tour, so we went for a hike along some of Chaa Creek's nature trails. They are well marked, and have interpretive signs, so we learned about some of the local plants and trees. We cooled off at the bar with a drink before we met David again for the river trip. He was a very nice guide, and had to work very hard to paddle us upstream against the current! He pointed out quite a few birds and things along the way. It was a very enjoyable paddle. When we arrived back, we once again had dinner at the restaurant...one of the best meals we had in Cayo. We were very impressed with the level of service at Chaa Creek. It is a beautiful facility, and we were treated like special guests, when in fact we were only visitors for the day.

We looked around this place on our own when we stayed in ChaaCreek Tent Camp. It was quite interesting, and gave us a sense of the incredible history of the area. We were also interested to learn about the history of ChaaCreek resort, and how it has grown from a small farm 5 miles upriver from town into a World Class lodge and supporter of sustainable environmentalism.
The blue morpho butterflies were also amazing.

For someone that is interested in the natural history around the mountains of Belize and are curious how they lived, the natural history museum at Chaa Creek is a good way to learn more about the surrounding area.
