Very informative hands on tour of the iguana breeding project. Taught us about iguanas and let us interact with them. Great value and good for kids

Holding a six foot iguana named Roxie was a hoot! Having Umberto, our knowledgeable guide place babies on us for photos was fun. Umberto is a nature guide who's father worked the forests of Belize for years extracting ingredients for chewing gum. He is very personable and a great photographer. This 45 minute excursion is well worth the $3 they charge. If you stay at San Ignacio Hotel you may experience this anytime of day.....

This is a secondary offering located on the San Ignacio Hotel's river valley area. It basically amounts to a well informed guide showing you through two enclosures, one for adults, the other for iguanas too young to fend for themselves against their older cousins and parents. It is a bit like a zoo cage that you can go in and interact with the captives. That the entry fees are plowed back into this conservation project is probably a good thing, at least for the fact that it provides a couple more jobs for locals and fosters local awareness of these creatures (which some eat for food). Most of the graduate iguanas from this facility are released in the area of the river valley owned by the hotel. Given that the place is not overrun with iguanas, and the project has been going for over ten years, I am pretty sure the actual impact on the local (iguana) population is pretty minimal. Worth the price for the opportunity to get this close to this type of animal without endangering them. Kids would probably love this.
Normally tours run on the hour. Our tour was delayed by half an hour or more. The hotel compensated for this.
