Several locals recommended Chon Saan, and we had been told that Chinese food in Belize is good quality, but this time it was a complete fail. The place was cavernous and empty (should have heeded that warning sign) and several tables were unwiped. The server behaved as if customers were the last thing she wanted. She shuffled over and commenced to nix pretty much everything I tried to order - green onion pancake (not doing that), eggplant stirfry (no eggplant) and so on. In fact, I wondered if I had wandered into the Belizean version of Monty Python's cheese shop. I finally settled for the special of pepper squid. My companions had combination plates. When they were arrived we were gobsmacked by the sheer amount of food, everything fried (steak was deep fried) and no fresh ingredient on the plate. My squid was inedible. There was no chilli flavour, the squid was greasy and rubbery and appeared to have freezer burn. You could taste the oil it had been cooked in (not fresh). It came without any sauce on a bed of sad lettuce and onion without dressing. Overall, a very depressing experience. Perhaps amazing food exists in Belmopan, but it is not here, nor at the Bull Frog.
