“Awesome!”
Reviewed December 17, 2012

I am so glad we stayed here! Cat & David are amazingly accommodating and their tour guides are awesome (Hi Hector!). The food is great and the scenery is so relaxing! I would recommend this Pook's 10 times over! A great stay in the middle of the jungle!

Room Tip: Bring bug spray, you are in the jungle!

Really enjoyed my stay at the lodge! The manager made us fell welcomed and accommodated everything and last minute changes to our plans. Everyone at the place went above and beyond to make us feel welcomed. If you go in a group the prices are cheaper for the tours. The dinners are amazing. The location is beautiful in the middle of the jungle, the road to get there is not the best. the location is away from the main road which made it expensive to always take a cab anywhere. Great place to relax and enjoy tours and nightwalks in the jungle. The rooms are okay, my advice is to take a lot of bug spray and beware that dinner is not included in the package. Nice rooms but a little on the overpriced

We stayed here for 2 nights after being picked up at the Guatemalan border by one of the staff from Pooks Hill. Welcome drinks with Ray and Laura who were both superb hosts both woth very interesting stories to tell. The bungalows are very very nice and clean, locally decorated (wanted to take the bed covers with me!). Dining was at the lodge family style which is a great way to meet the other guests. The Mayan cooks are very very good at what they do and the kitchen was always spotless. Delicious food for every meal. The upstairs part of the lodge is very comfortable for hanging out during the day (hammocks!) watching the abundance of wildlife around (lots of hummingbirds) or relaxing in the evening. We went with Hector to the ATM cave and could not have had a better experience: we got there first before the crowds arrived, Hector was an excellent guide with a wealth of information and the experience was one of the best in Belize. Highly recommend experiencing it for yourself.

Beautiful bungalows among the jungle. We stayed there on out visit to ATM caves.Due to proximity, we were the first ones in the caves and we avoided the crowds. It is a great friendly atmosphere with lovely hosts, great home style foods. The jungle embraces this place.

Room Tip: There are two honeymoon suites that are directly on top of the jungle, i would book them the next ti...

So, Pooks Hill is at the end of 5.5 mile ride on a very unpaved and rutted out road. After a long travel day coming from Guatemala, that road was not inspiring confidence for us. But, once we arrived at the grounds and were met by our key contact and manager, Cat, the ride was a distant memory...and subsequent rides on that road we chalked up to 'local flavor'!!!

The property is really cool, with a thatched main house area with honor bar (very impressive in this day and age!!) upstairs and the dining room downstairs. We had some dietary requirements that Cat and the kitchen crew were able to accommodate, for which we were grateful. The food was outstanding, lots of choices and deft usage of spices and sauces.

Our room was circular with a huge bed and a nice bathroom, The property advises when there is hot water, so we showered at the strategic times noted by the hotel.

On our first day, our waterfall rapelling excursion got waylaid by about 2 hrs. and yet Cat's husband, David, waited for us at the pickup point, poised to contact a rescue team if we had not surfaced any much later. He could have easily been annoyed and dour about having to cool his heels, but he was upbeat and most pleasant, which we really appreciated.

The following day, we took the ATM tour, and Pooks Hill assigned us Hector as our guide, who had the perfect balance between being concerned about our safety without spooking us or being too mother hen-ish. His narrative about the history of the ATM and the Mayans was fascinating and well-received by our finicky flock of fourteen year old girls......so way to go, Hector! BTW, Pooks Hill is by far the closest property to ATM and we easily beat the other tours by 2 hrs. and it was worth getting up early to enjoy the silence of the caves and not feel like a bunch of lemmings following 50 people ahead of us and not having to navigate two way traffic like almost all of the other tours.

I was allowed to burn the midnight oil in the office using their wifi, which as much as I didn't want to work, that time spent was really helpful freeing up time during the following day.

Our time was a bit limited there, so we didn't get to hike the grounds as much as it offers, but we did get a nice glimpse walking about a mile or so via shortcut to ATM.

Quite simply, we were quite pleased.

After quite a bit of research I decided on Pook's Hill for my 60th birthday! It was a great decision! Mike picked is up at the airport, took us to lunch and then to the Belize Zoo! When we arrived at Pook's we received a warm welcome and our bags were taken to our room (Bird Walk Cabana). Vicki and her son Jake were our hosts for the few days we were there and they were fantastic! The other guests were great and it was like spending time with good friends!! Hector was our guide for the ATM Cave and he was great. Was not sure I could do it but with his guidance and the encouragement of the group I did it! (and was quite proud of the accomplishment). Spent my 60th birthday at the Tikal Maya ruins in Guatemala (a must). Mike was our guide on this trip and he is an absolute delight and so knowledgable! Bird watching with Francisco and our new "birder" friends was fantastic! Spent an afternoon floating down the river in inner tubes which was great fun! Spending time at the bar was really fun and the dinners were great!! Linda (one of the cooks) baked a great cake for my birthday! Francisco took us zip lining and cave tubing on our way to the airport to fly to San Pedro, and he was a great guide! It was hard leaving Pook's Hill as it seemed like home and our experience there was fantastic! We made some new friends there and had experiences that will never be forgotten! I am sorry we did not meet Cat and David but hopefully we will meet them on our next trip there! Cat set up our itinerary, and she did a great job! This a GREAT place to stay, I promise you will not be disappointed!! Thanks for a great way to begin my 60th trip around the sun!

Room Tip: The Bird Walk Cabana was GREAT!

We were looking for a lodge in Belize that was out of the way and quit so we could enjoy the jungle and relax. We found it at Pook's Hill. We have traveled to many places but have never felt as welcome as we were at Pook's. You feel like part of the family when you stay here. Vicki, Cat and Dave were so welcoming from the moment we arrived. Mike, our guide that picked us up at the airport, was great. Answered all of our questions while in route to Pook's and told us about Belize. We stopped on the way for lunch which was rice and beans. Very good traditional lunch. He even took us to the river and did some swimming with us.
If you are looking for a family friendly place to stay you have found it at Pook's Hill!
We will certainly return.
