Owner description: Green Hills Butterfly Ranch is the place to go to enjoy Belize butterflies and learn about them in the process. Green Hills literally has thousands of live butterflies on display in a 4,000 square feet walk-in flight area. The guided tour in the butterfly flight area and the Blue Morpho Breeding Center takes about an hour. The facilities are surrounded by a botanical garden with more than 150 labeled plants, shrubs and trees. These gardens are home to dozens of hummingbirds, and the average visitor can easily see eight or even more species while visiting the Butterfly Ranch. Green Hills is worth a stop on your way to or from other popular destinations such as the Mountain Pine Ridge, Barton Creek, Caracol or the nearby villages of San Antonio and El Progresso. We open at 7 am and close at 4 pm. Late tours are welcome but only after reservation.

This butterfly farm is truly a place to visit for butterfly enthusiasts or those interested in nature and a close up look at these spectacular insects. Numerous butterflies representing well over a dozen species inhabit a large screened aviary located in the rolling hills near Mountain Pine Reserve. These butterflies are not shy, and visitors have a chance to capture numerous close-up photographs. A tour guide provides information about the farm and the life cycles of the butterflies that call Belize home. Visitors get to see all life stages-eggs, larvae, pupae and hear about the care that is required to rear butterflies. The property is also filled with tropical flowering plants. A must see while traveling through the Cayo district.

We visited in the morning and saw the butterflies come to life with the sunlight! It was beautiful and wonderful to learn about all the different types of butterflies and see them at different life stages. We also saw eight species of hummingbirds at the feeders. Everyone who worked there was very knowledgeable about both the butterflies and hummingbirds and it was great to see their enthusiasm and love for nature. A great place to enjoy some of the "little" splenders of Belize!

My friend and I visited Green Hills Butterfly Ranch on a tour that included the Barton Creek Cave, which is nearby.
We enjoyed seeing the wide variety of hummingbirds. The butterfly breeding area was the highlight though. You can see blue morphos, clear wing butterflies and many other species up close.
Tineke gave us a personal tour and is a fascinating person with a lot to say about butterflies, nature and Belize in general. It was a very enjoyable experience.

We had quite a day planned with lots of stops. Green Hills was last on our list. They stayed open late for us. It was the most amazing time as all of the butterflies were flying around at that time. Our kids loved letting the butterflies land all over them. Definitely worth the stop!

On the way from Georgeville to the Mountain Pine Ridge we passed ‘Green Hills Butterfly Ranch’. We decided to stop and do their guided tour through their butterfly house. The tour was amazing. The guide was very knowledgeable and answered all our questions, she pointed out the many varieties of butterflies and we took dozens of pictures. We have never seen so many butterflies in a butterfly house.
After the tour we sat down and whatched the hummingbirds on the flowers and feeders. Our guide told us that they sometimes see seven different hummingbird species on the feeders! And these birds are only a few feet from you. Then we walked back to our vehicle through the beautiful gardens where many plants and trees had signs with the names on it.
