Owner description: Green Hills Butterfly Ranch is the place to go to enjoy Belize butterflies and learn about them in the process. Green Hills literally has thousands of live butterflies on display in a 4,000 square feet walk-in flight area. The guided tour in the butterfly flight area and the Blue Morpho Breeding Center takes about an hour. The facilities are surrounded by a botanical garden with more than 150 labeled plants, shrubs and trees. These gardens are home to dozens of hummingbirds, and the average visitor can easily see eight or even more species while visiting the Butterfly Ranch. Green Hills is worth a stop on your way to or from other popular destinations such as the Mountain Pine Ridge, Barton Creek, Caracol or the nearby villages of San Antonio and El Progresso. We open at 7 am and close at 4 pm. Late tours are welcome but only after reservation.

My friend and I visited Green Hills Butterfly Ranch on a tour that included the Barton Creek Cave, which is nearby.
We enjoyed seeing the wide variety of hummingbirds. The butterfly breeding area was the highlight though. You can see blue morphos, clear wing butterflies and many other species up close.
Tineke gave us a personal tour and is a fascinating person with a lot to say about butterflies, nature and Belize in general. It was a very enjoyable experience.

We had quite a day planned with lots of stops. Green Hills was last on our list. They stayed open late for us. It was the most amazing time as all of the butterflies were flying around at that time. Our kids loved letting the butterflies land all over them. Definitely worth the stop!

On the way from Georgeville to the Mountain Pine Ridge we passed ‘Green Hills Butterfly Ranch’. We decided to stop and do their guided tour through their butterfly house. The tour was amazing. The guide was very knowledgeable and answered all our questions, she pointed out the many varieties of butterflies and we took dozens of pictures. We have never seen so many butterflies in a butterfly house.
After the tour we sat down and whatched the hummingbirds on the flowers and feeders. Our guide told us that they sometimes see seven different hummingbird species on the feeders! And these birds are only a few feet from you. Then we walked back to our vehicle through the beautiful gardens where many plants and trees had signs with the names on it.

My husband and I recently visited the Green Hills Butterfly Ranch, located on the road to Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve between Belmopan and San Ignacio. This is the largest butterfly reserve in Belize, and offers the opportunity to see the entire butterfly life cycle (egg, larva, pupa, adult) in a lovely natural rainforest setting. We were given a very informative tour through the expansive screened flight house, which is filled with native vegetation and hundreds of softly winging, brightly colored butterflies of dozens of species. The striking wing patterns and brilliant colors were a feast for the eyes. Several of the butterflies perched on us as we moved through the house! I loved that part. The upright case filled with chrysalses was also very cool. We also got to see butterflies laying their eggs, and several different stages of caterpillars. Near the flight house, there is also a covered picnic area and a botanic collection of rainforest plants to explore. The owners are currently renovating the botanic garden, so there will be even more to see in the future. Another highlight were all the different species of hummingbirds that were constantly buzzing the feeders by the covered gift shop area -- they were quite lively and very entertaining to watch! We also saw toucans feeding in the trees during our visit. Be sure to bring your camera! This is probably a half day activity from San Ignacio, or you could easily combine it with other activities in the area, such as a visit to the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve. All in all, this is a relaxing place that I would very much recommend to anyone who enjoys the rainforest and it's amazing biodiversity, and beautiful butterflies.

Both beautiful and informative, the tour takes place in their butterfly hatchery and flight pen. The guide is very knowledgeable and explains how the eggs are laid, and how they progress through their stages until they emerge as a beautiful butterfly.

There are T-shirts and other items available.

Check the website for directions. The easiest route from San Ignacio is to go east on the Western Highway for 6 miles and turn right at Georgeville onto Pine Ridge Road, which your map will probable show as Chiquibul Road. Go 8 miles and watch for the sign on the right.
