Under a mile walk from Mariposa Lodge, near San Antonio and San Ignacio. They breed the butterflies from egg to adult, explain and show samples of all stages of development for different types. Then you can spend as long as you like in the lovely butterfly enclosure as thousands fly around and land on you. There is also a viewing area for many different hummingbirds. Great for families. Entrance isn't cheap but worth it. We went in an evening and returned the next morning to see different types of butterflies being active.

This attraction was not on our itinerary but our driver/guide recommended it as we were passing fairly close by. We were so pleased he did, and had a wonderful visit with expert information from Robin, the owner. We saw so many species and were shown the different stages of pupae to caterpillar development. The enthusiasm of the staff for the complete environment was evident. The humming birds were also exquisite and easily photographable from vantage spots. We were also pleased to note very clean, flushable toilets!

We enjoyed our visit, which included some time at the butterfly enclosure and a step by step walk through of the life cycle that was really interesting. We had some trouble finding specific information on the website so I am including a picture of the sign in case it is helpful.

As an added bonus on our visit, we spotted a howler monkey eating fruit in a tree at the end of the driveway.

Before writing I was struck by the fact that 4 visitors had rated this attraction terrible.
I point out that all referred to the previous owners. Since the middle of 2018 the butterfly farm is now owned by a new family who have done much to make a visit well worthwhile.
Jeronimo who deals with the butterfly breeding cycle is both knowledgeable and wonderfully personable. He clearly adores what he does and is only too happy to share his passion with all visitors to the farm. Although the release pen is relatively small it is certainly large enough to cater to a group of 6 to 10. It is a magical experience finding oneself surrounded by quite literally thousands (3000 I believe) beautiful butterflies in an almost natural setting. But the experience is enhanced significantly as Jeronimo takes you to the out building where he rears vast numbers of these creatures, from eggs, to caterpillars to pupa and then to hatching butterflies (right in front of your eyes.) Utterly brilliant and awe inspiring. As if this were not enough... the owners have set up a viewing shelter all around which are placed feed stations which attract dozens of wild humming birds which if you enjoy bird watching is almost a religious experience. I have to admit, I shed a tear or two mesmerised by the close quarter antics of these uniquely extraordinary and spectacular little birds. We counted 9 different species during our time there. Frankly I would have paid the same amount again as I did to visit the butterflies to enjoy the hummingbirds so you really do get two visits for the price of one! I really cannot think of a visit I have enjoyed more anywhere in the world or which I was happier to write about. Well worth a visit.

The small ranch has 2 sections - 1. a great farm that raises 8 kinds of butterflies and 2. for all practical purposes, a hummingbird photography studio.
There are 3 feeders, ample surrounding branches and numerous places in the middle of the action to take pictures of hundreds of hummingbirds. The dominant species is the White-necked Jacobin plus many others - especially the photographic Violet Sabrewing, the White bellied Emerald, the Rufous-tailed, the Scaly-breasted, Green-breasted mango and the Long-billed hermit. I got great shots of all of them plus the butterflies.
The staff at the farm are very friendly, dedicated and knowledgeable. There are no refreshments but places to have a picnic and a clean bathroom. The road is rough but the trip is worth it. There were no other tourists when I went and the entry was $20 US. They sell a few items - get the kitchen magnets of butterflies - give to kids to try to place the 2 positive poles together.
